Later, the music increases its harmonic tension on the word “relentless.� The closing phrase is sung on a hum, as if to represent a memory, an echo, or perhaps a shadow in the window which reminds us of something that has passed. The main melodic idea is sustained while the harmonies meander. This is to represent the notion that events in life can be unexpected; things change, and we must forge a new path. The opening line of the text, Love, in whom all things are, is repeated to act as a cleansing phrase to end the piece, and to return us to the idea that we can find love and compassion in everything. That is one of the reasons I chose to set this text, it is a part of the story that is often left out. The other reason is that this it contains one of the first New Testament prophecies concerning Christ, the revelation that Jesus will save his people from their sins. In this arrangement, the opening verse is serene, perhaps lulling the audience into a false sense of security, before livening up in the middle verse, and opening up to the full rock version in the last (via an imitation string quartet waltz in the bridge).
