SKU: A0.1277132

Composed by Adrian Gagiu. 21st Century,Christian,Classical,Latin. Octavo. 128 pages. Adrian Gagiu #868444. Published by Adrian Gagiu (A0.1277132).

Missa Solemnis in B major, op. 27, vocal score and piano part (for rehearsal purposes only).
Based on its Neo-classical style, this setting of the Roman Catholic mass text could possibly work as a festive mass (missa solemnis) with trumpets and timpani, and its duration would fit such a solemn service. However, its intense and sometimes dramatic treatment and universal addressability due to its well-known and rather concentrated text, yet also due to eliminating the „Filioque†(which would still fit the rhythm of the repeated „qui ex Patreâ€, should any Catholics ever wish to perform this as a mass) make it rather a „liturgical oratorio for all nationsâ€, more appropriate in the concert hall.

The work has had a long gestation: imagined in 1984 after the composer’s first contact with Beethoven’s masterpiece, then sketched first in 1987-1989, and many of its themes date back from those years. Its working out is quite polyphonic, discretely modal and cyclical, and also full of centuries-old musical symbols traditionally associated with the setting of the mass text: e.g. unisons for the more dogmatical parts, Baroque dotted rhythms at the Nativity (the first coming of the  King of Kings), „rex caelestis†and also at his Passion (whose setting is discretely inspired by folkloric Romanian laments), the „anabasis†gesture at „Gloria in excelsis Deoâ€, „et ascendit in caelisâ€, „in remissionem peccatorum†and the resurrection, a flute trill standing for the Holy Spirit who has come ’like a dove’ at „et incarnatus estâ€, a cross-shaped texture at „crucifixusâ€, and some word-painting (hushed sonorities at „et invisibiliumâ€, anticipations between orchestra and chorus at „et exspecto†etc.). Moreover, certain symbolic roles are assigned to the instrumental groups when alone (the organ represents God the Father and transcendence, the winds and/or solo voices represent God the Son and humanity, and the strings represent the Holy Spirit).

„Kyrie†is restrained and soft, besides the powerful chords opening the respective sections of its tripartite, simple structure, and it leans towards Palestrina’s serene modality and counterpoint. „Gloria†begins with a colorful orchestral introduction depicting discretely the shepherds who kept watch over their flocks right before the Nativity, and then gradually the bright revelation. „Credo†has an orchestral introduction as well, but powerful, recurring and based on the beginning of the plainchant hymn „Pange linguaâ€, made famous by Mozart’s last symphony and by other Classical composers. Both „Gloria†and „Credo†end with extended, powerful and elaborate fugues („in gloria Dei Patris†and „et vitam venturi saeculiâ€, respectively) with dramatic modulations and sometimes with enthusiastic syncopations at odds with the words’ accents, a la Stravinsky. The same sections plus „Agnus Dei†end with soft quartal harmonies suggesting transcendent appeasement (similar harmonies appear powerfully at the beginning of „Sanctusâ€). „Judicare†quotes the beginning of the well-known „Dies irae†plainchant tune, and the Consecration between the „Sanctus†and „Benedictus†sections is represented by a contemplative prelude for solo organ, quoting Lutheran chorales, too. Another long orchestral introduction, suggesting the Last Judgment and based on traditional Byzantine hymns, opens „Agnus Deiâ€, which includes another quotation (the famous ’Dresden Amen’ at „qui tollis peccata mundi†and „dona nobis pacemâ€). In the final section, with its refined simplicity, the choral voices enter in descending order, and the „Kyrie eleison†theme is briefly remembered, then it ends softly and peacefully.

Total duration: 50 min. Performing Rights Organization: SOCAN. The mp3 audio clip is Kyrie.

By Frank Sinatra. By George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin. Arranged by John Fries. 20th Century. 4 pages. John Fries #824360. Published by John Fries (A0.1228242).

Please contact me by email at jfries@ptd.net to make a special request or to find out all that I have to offer and to express your comments or concerns. Thanks, John.   This song began life in 1930 as a nine-bar phrase with the working title There's No Stopping Me Now.  Its title phrase Nice work if you can get it came from an English magazine.  It was one of nine songs the Gershwin brothers wrote for the movie A Damsel in Distress in which it was performed by Fred Astaire with backing vocals by The Stafford Sisters.  The song was published in 1937.  The first jazz recording of the work was by Tommy Dorsey three weeks after the release of the film.  The song was recorded by many jazz singers and adopted by bebop instrumentalists; Jerry Newman recorded pianist Thelonious Monk performing the tune in 1941 at Minton's Playhouse, a nightclub closely connected with early bebop, and he subsequently recorded it several times.

Composed by Alan Bullard. Children,Christmas,Classical. Octavo. 36 pages. Colne Edition / BullardMusic #688801. Published by Colne Edition / BullardMusic (A0.1084615).

A seasonable celebration for SATB choir, optional youth choir and narrator, with piano (or brass quintet, or string quintet, score and parts available from www.colneedition.co.uk). Duration c. 25-30 minutes. This 8-movement cantata contrasts the cooking of the Christmas dinner with more reflective Christmas themes, with an opportunity for the audience to join in at the end. Ideal for Christmas concerts.
We welcome you to our ‘Feast for Christmas’.  In the first movement, Christmas Welcome, the scene is set: but the key to a successful Christmas dinner is forward planning and in the second movement the Christmas Pudding is prepared in November, on ‘Stir-up Sunday’. In the third movement, Christmas Eve, the early twentieth century poet Robert Bridges looks back, on a frosty evening, from his own time to the very distant past, and considers what Christmas means to him. Then in the fourth movement, our Christmas Feast is prepared, and the Christmas Grace (fifth movement) is not forgotten.  It is of course impolite to sing during the actual Christmas Dinner itself, but towards the end of the meal the peace is rudely interrupted by the sixth movement, Christmas Crackers. The seventh movement, Christmas Spirit, reminds us, in seventeenth-century words, of how we should share our good fortune with those who have need of it, and in the last movement, Christmas Celebration, the audience is invited to join in, with the last verse of the well known ‘We wish you a merry Christmas’
Some separate movements are also available: Christmas Recipe, Festival (Christmas) Grace, and Christmas Celebration.

Alan Bullard’s choral works are performed worldwide, and many have been recorded and broadcast. He has a growing reputation for music that choirs enjoy performing, and which speaks directly to audiences.
The Colne Choral Series contains a range of Bullard’s pieces for adult and youth choirs of all types, including cantatas and choral suites as well as individual movements. For full details please visit www.colneedition.co.uk or www.alanbullard.co.uk.

Composed by Annie Routley. 20th Century,Christian,Christmas,Contemporary,Sacred. Octavo. 9 pages. Annie Routley #4301147. Published by Annie Routley (A0.914719).

This is the full score - piano accompaniment, drum and SATB choir.  A choir score is available separately

This carol is designed to be very easy to learn and perform.  It needs to be accompanied by piano (simple part) and drum (no snare).  A bodhran or cajon would work just as well.

There is one minor-key tune for both the men and ladies to learn.  (This works as a 4-part round later in the carol)

Â·        The men start, accompanied just by the piano ostinato.  The drum doesn’t enter until bar 7, when the men finish their ‘drums drumming’

Â·        While the ladies sing verse 2, the men sing ‘Drum, drum’ in consecutive 5ths.  NB, the melody is slightly different at the end of the ladies’ verse, since the words ‘poor and lowly stable’ need the melody to come down rather than go up

Â·        Then the ladies sing the ‘Drum, drum’ 5ths whilst the men sing verse 3

Â·        Everyone sings verse 4 in unison and joyously

Â·        Everyone then sings verse 4 twice in a round – basses, altos, tenors then sopranos

Â·        Everyone repeats the last line of verse 4 ‘The child we’ve waited for is born …’ together (the piano and drum cut out so that the voices are unaccompanied in bar 35 – and then resume for bar 36)

Â·        ‘O hear the angels singing’ (unaccompanied) – then a loud chord and drum on beat 3 of the last bar

Enjoy!

A high-definition video of the carol is available on YouTube – type in ‘Carol of the Wise Men – CMM Choir’ and select the picture with the choir ladies in white blouses and red scarves

By Charlie Puth. By Charlie Puth, Daniel Smyers, and Jordan Reynolds. Arranged by Jacob Klingsten. 21st Century,A Cappella,Contemporary,Pop. 14 pages. Jacob Klingsten #931792. Published by Jacob Klingsten (A0.1347140).

That's Not How This Works by Charlie Puth is a 2023 pop hit with chilling harmonies and a confrontational message on setting expectations. This arrangement is for SATB a cappella groups or choirs and sits at an intermediate level for the high school/collegiate age. While there isn’t a vocal percussionist part in the score, it is recommended to perform this arrangement with one, as the score indicates entrances and exits for the VP.

This arrangement features three soloists, all with their own respective line in the score. If one wishes to, the third solo part can be merged into the other two solo parts. While this piece appears to be difficult, the fairly repetitive nature, mostly homophonic texture, and limited range of the vocal parts eases the learning process.

Additional Details:

  • Key: A Major
  • 14 Pages
  • Length: 2m 43s
  • Ranges:
    • Soloist 1: F#3-E5

SKU: A0.1394423

Composed by Jay Dougherty. 21st Century,A Cappella,Chamber,Contemporary,Contest,Festival. 4 pages. Jay Dougherty #977907. Published by Jay Dougherty (A0.1394423).

Despondency by Jay Dougherty explores the depths of human emotion, expressing profound feelings of pain, anguish, and desolation. Through the utilization of the overtone series, “Despondency†portrays a haunting soundscape that gradually builds into a solemn tone cluster, evoking a sense of emptiness and sadness.

The overtone series serves as the foundation upon which the composition unfolds, weaving together a tapestry of natural harmonies that resonate with an ethereal quality. Despite the simplicity of its text, consisting of only four sung words – Nothing. Aching. Empty. Broken. – these words reflect the raw and unfiltered experience of despair and sorrow.

“Despondency†is movement 3 of Jay Dougherty’s Phoenix Cantata, which is a six-movement vocal and piano work that explores the themes of resilience and the transformative power of change. The music and lyrics are the creative work of Dr. Jay Dougherty, with a piano accompaniment by Justin La. Drawing inspiration from the mythical symbolism of the phoenix, this cantata narrates the journey through life's challenges and tribulations and explores how we can learn to comprehend, embrace, and grow from them. Although the Phoenix is not explicitly mentioned, the underlying message resonates with the tale of the phoenix: after facing adversity or transformation, we emerge stronger and more beautiful. Each of the 6 movements centers on a flower garden, the gardener's affection for the garden, the looming storm that could devastate it, and the gardener's eventual realization that, even after the storm, the garden remains beautiful and precious.

Movement 3, Despondency, is performed a cappella and makes use of the overtone series and chord clusters to convey the gardener's torment and heartbreak as the garden has lost its innocence after a torrential storm. It is a heartbreaking lament that portrays the gardener's profound sorrow.

Composed by Christina Rossetti, Rebekah Wilson, and Traditional Irish. Arranged by Rebekah Wilson. Christmas,Classical,Praise & Worship,Sacred,Traditional. Octavo. 7 pages. Rebekah Wilson #129264. Published by Rebekah Wilson (A0.518559).

A simple yet beautiful arrangement of the traditional Christmas carol for SATB choir and pipe organ. Opening with soprano solo and gentle accompaniment, each verse of Christina Rossetti's poem develops through choral a cappella, chromatic vocal harmony and concludes with a strong organ statement. This arrangement is ideal for choirs of all sizes, but works particularly well with chamber choir and can be used as an introit or centrepiece to any Christmas performance.
