Back to School 2015, Duration 8.5 minutes, composed in 2003. Text is excerpted from the book The Decoration of Houses by Edith Wharton and Ogden Codman, Jr.. Seven short movements: I. Introduction: Rooms in General, II. Openings: Doors, Windows, Vestibule, III. Solo: The Dining Room, IV. Structure: Walls Ceilings, Floors, V. Solo: Fireplaces, VI. Interiors: The Children’s Room, VII. Conclusion: Common Sense. Solo passages may be sung as unisons. Narration may be divided among several people. The occasional x noteheads indicate that text is spoken in rhythm. The audio clip is the final movement--Conclusion, performed in May, 2003 by the Holyoke Community College Chorale, directed by Dr. Janet Polvino and accompanied by Joyce Crouch. Complete recording available upon request from the composer at ebrill@hcc.edu. The nature of the piece is elegant, a bit satiric, a bit wacky--certainly one of a kind. Minimum level is advanced high school or college. Licensed by BMI.
