This is a piece I created for my last fall choir concert in High School. Up to this point, I had only created songs for myself, many of which never saw the light of day. However, I realized I had more to share once I joined my high school choir, so I started writing for my choir. I had created several pieces, but this one truly felt like the best out of the bunch. It took a while because I forced myself to write in a way that made me uncomfortable and challenged me, but I believe it turned out pretty well.

As a composer, I feel I always need to be working on somethinng. Even if it's not for a commission, I like to work on my skills, on my composing craft, on keepng the creative ideas flowing. So occasionally, I set myself assignments of a sort, which is how this song cycle Spectrum came to be. I set myself the task of interpreting the colours of the rainbow pride flag. Because I am so gay. The cycle is not actually LGBTQIA+ themed in its subject matter as such, the flag was just a kind of framework for my creativity.

In thje intervening years since the cycle was first conceived, the LGBTQIA+ community has embraced a new flag, the Progress Pride FLag, which will give me a few more colours to interpret and add to the original cycle.

Thie song Yellow Rain is a setting of a joyous poem by Monique Duval about getting caught in a sun shower on the beach.

The Ballad of Flora and James is a re-working of a traditional broadside ballad, the original of which can be found in the archives at the Bodleian Library in Oxford. The original tells the story of Flora, a young girl who dresses as a man in order to follow her boyfriend to sea - but this modern day version has roles reversed, and it's James who joins the war to be with Flora.

Cat's clever arrangement brings this story firmly in to the modern era, and affectionately pokes fun at the 'traditional' gender roles often featured in this type of song. It's a hearty song; funny, and fun to sing, and suitable for all ages.

There is NO MINIMUM ORDER quantity on this arrangement, because I arrange all my songs to be taught by ear. I've taught this one myself to my community choir and they have really enjoyed singing it - I hope you do too!

From the composer...

The text for I'll See You in the Morning was taken from a children's book of the same name. The book, by Mike Jolley, evokes a calm, reassuring atmosphere with its warm illustrations of the moon and stars, snuggling animals, and sleeping children. I wanted to capture the same aura through the use of lush, comforting harmonies and a relaxed tempo. I also wanted to highlight the sense of deep love that a parent feels for a child, as this text does. The mother of a two-year-old myself, these feelings are somewhat self-referential.

This song was written for and dedicated to the Perry High School class of 1989 in Perry, Il, a very small town in population but big in humanity where I got my start as a first year music teacher. I taught everything from kindergarten through high school, general music, choir, and band. Many of my students from then are still friends on Facebook. The entire graduating class of 12 performed this at their graduation and I think it still speaks to graduating classes now. It is easy to perform, moving from unison to 2, then 3, then 4 parts. The piano part is easy enough to play for even mediocre pianists like myself.

O magnum mysterium is a responsorial chant from the Matins of Christmas. I was searching for a text that would easily fit and be suitable for Christmastime and was lucky to find an old score that I had first started working on in 2013, originally in a men’s choir setting. I initially asked myself if the world needs yet another composition featuring this text about the Virgin Mary and the birth of Jesus, but after playing it through a couple of times, I was struck by the simplicity and purity in the music. I immediately started to edit the original score and also made a version for mixed choir, which I decided to dedicate to VoNo Vocals and their conductor Lone Larsen. O magnum mysterium is to be premiered in Tolosa, Spain, in the beginning of November 2021. – Martin Åsander.
