Sarkissian's music has been performed in dozens of countries including the UK, Germany, Sweden, Austria, Italy, Switzerland, Japan, Canada, and the USA. His arrangement of an Armenian ancient chant Great Mystery has been included in the Oxford University Press anthology World Carols for Choirs and has been recorded by the BBC Singers. Sarkissian's instrumental work Hunting the Hunter was premiered under his baton at Carnegie Hall in 2012. His composition Joyful Light for choir has been performed more than a hundred times around the world.Vahram Sarkissian is also active as a lecturer. His workshops and presentations on extended vocal techniques are frequently featured at the most prestigious choral festivals and symposia around the world. An instrumental version by Heywood and Hugo Winterhalter reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and No. 7 on the R&B chart in 1956. A version sung by Andy Williams was also popular that year, reaching No. 7 on the Billboard chart. It's also been recorded by dozens of jazz and pop artists and remains a favorite of the 1950s. This arrangement highlights the flowing melody with rich harmonies and many of the familiar piano figures associated with the original Eddie Heywood recording.

The text is by Canadian poet Frederick George Scott (1861-1944). The original title is Requiescant (Let them rest). The source is Christian Poetry in Canada (ed David A. Kent ed, Anglican Book Center and ECW Press, Toronto, Canada, 1993) page 54. Scott was a military chaplain during World War I. This poem was, in the poet’s own words, [b]egun while I was lying awake in a sleeping-bag under a tarpaulin at Brielen, near Ypres…. during the gas attack on April 22nd, 1915…. As I lay awake, I wondered what all our comrades who had passed over were doing now…. I finished the poem at a little village called Robec. As I wrote it, I could see through the window, my host, who was a carpenter, making a baby’s coffin. Here’s a new arrangement of that ever-popular American folksong Shenandoah.  The original song probably has its origins among the French Canadians who traded with Native Americans around the Great Lakes during the sixteenth century. These traders exchanged weapons and tools for animal furs, especially beaver pelts. Paddling their canoes along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers the traders were well-known for their singing. However, as most of the traders were illiterate, the songs were never written down and went through numerous changes over the years and centuries.  In most versions of the song, the lyrics tell of a seafarer, possibly a canoeing fur-trader, who was in love with the daughter of Shenandoah, a Native American Chief who lived in what is now the state of Virginia. John Shenandoah was a real person: evidently an individual of commanding presence who lived for over a hundred years.  Shenandoah became one of the most popular capstan shanties, a slow song which set a manageable pace for the crew in a heavy and lengthy task. Most versions of the song have a similar couplet at the end of each verse. In some transcriptions, the melody is written out entirely in 4/4 time; others use triple time and some arrangements use a mixture of both. In this version, the lyrics have been selected from different versions of the song. This SATB arrangement for choir and piano is within easy technical reach of most amateur choirs. The top soprano note is G just above the treble staff. The highest alto note is the C above middle C and the tenor and bass parts fall well within the usual choral range. Each section of the choir takes the melody at some point. With a running time of 04:00 this piece is enjoyable to sing and hear. It’s an essential addition to your choir’s repertoire.

Robert Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943) was born in Canada before moving to the Unites States at the age of 11. He began studying piano at an early age and went on to be the first black American to graduate from Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Throughout his career he worked as a composer, organist, pianist, choral director and music professor; he received many awards for his music and writing and spent a period at the Fontainebleau School of Music south of Paris where he studied with Nadia Boulanger. Dett became well known for incorporating tunes and and elements of African American folk songs and spirituals into classical music.Listen to the Lambs is scored for mixed unaccompanied chorus with solo soprano part and was originally published by G. Schirmer in 1914. It became one of his most famous choral works and was featured in The Oxford Book of Spirituals and Choral Music: A Norton Historical Anthology. There are modern recordings of the anthem performed by chamber choirs but Dett himself conducted a 900-voice performance of the work at Hampton University, Virginia where he was the director of the music department between 1928 and 1932.
