ISMN 9790900969910. A narrative work for intermediate unaccompanied mixed choirs (SATB divisi, a cappella), setting Lewis Carroll’s epic adventure poem ‘Jabberwocky’. Score includes piano reduction for rehearsal, and pronunciation guide.In Lewis Carroll’s ‘Jabberwocky’, published in his 1871 novel Through the Looking-Glass, a “beamish boy� sets out on an adventure through a mysterious land populated by fantastical creatures, vanquishes a fearsome beast and returns triumphantly home. Central to the enduring appeal of the poem is Carroll’s linguistic creativity. There are at least 16 other choral settings of ‘Jabberwocky’, so why choose this one? Like most, Kirsten Duncan’s composition seeks to express the meanings of the words and actions in the text through musical ideas. Unlike most, this piece is composed for intermediate to advanced mixed adult choirs (SATB divisi) without any instrumental accompaniment, and combines the tradition of Anglican chant (evident in the final stanza) with a mood of fireside storytelling for a ripping musical yarn of high adventure. Kirsten Duncan has had a lifelong passion for choral singing. This piece combines the standard text of Ave Maria in English with the text from Proverbs 31 known as Woman of ValorI wrote this piece to venerate Mary and also to venerate all women and their personal strengths.  I consider this Easy to Medium in difficulty, as it has a lot of unison singing and simple four part choral singing.  This would be perfect to use to in a Christmas, Mother's Day, or regular service that highlights contributions of women, and the personal strength necessary to surmount ordeals in life.   The middle melody is taken from the Gregorian Chant Ave Maria but with words from Proverbs.  It should be sung in the style of a legato, light chant, yet with crisp consonants to hear all the words.  I am working on an SSA version of the same piece.  For those who do not have a budget for a harpist, I also have a backing track available with the harp and organ.  The organ is lighter, so an organist could play along and be dominant, and the harp would be heard most.  The harp part is attached score.

This piece was originally written in 2023 for Salisbury University's Larum Voces chamber choir, founded by Sophia Merbaum and Eric Gehl. It features a beautiful cascading vocal pattern which represents the falling of water. The melodies and harmonies are passed around the vocal parts in the first half of the piece. In the second half, the soprano section leads the descending pattern as different sections can be heard repeating the words and melody. At the end of the piece, the percussive sound of ending consonants is used to represent the crashing of water on rocks below.

Having a lot of fifths and blending can make this piece beautiful and clean. The humming bits (the mms) can be adjusted to an oo, oh, or ah sound depending on the director's preference.
