SATB choir (choir divisi) and piano - Medium - Digital Download

SKU: MQ.1.3437-E

Composed by Craig Carnahan. Advanced/Collegiate. Secular, 21st century. Octavo. 15 pages. Duration 4 minutes, 30 seconds. Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital #1.3437-E. Published by Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital (MQ.1.3437-E).

English.

There is a profound simplicity to this quote by Rabindranath Tagore that connected with me immediately and left no doubt in my mind that I wanted to set it. In reality, it practically set itself. The lilting rhythm of Tagore's words and their joyful message suggest a cadence that is both animated and graceful and an interpretation that is both gregarious and intimate. My role was to step aside and let the words speak for themselves. My hope is that the resulting music mirrors the engaging spirit of Tagore's text.–Craig Carnahan

This Missa Brevis is complex but extremely musical and beautiful. Compositionally, it is quintessentially post–modern; an amalgam of styles with fluid tonal centres, diverse meter and wonderfully creative melodies and phrasing.

It is a challenging piece no doubt, however this Missa Brevis is very rewarding in its successful realization and performance.

For the choral director, there is much room for creative analysis and interpretation.

The duration for a complete performance is approximately 15 minutes.

This anthem, scored for SATB and piano sets the poem by Emily Dickinson to music. Dickinson’s poem presents humanity’s hunger to know the truth about the existence of an afterlife. Many people believe, but also doubt that something exists beyond death, invisible as music, but just as real as sound. This “other world” invites us to come closer, but confounds us, leading to the tension between faith and doubt. Faith stumbles, and no drug can numb the toothache of doubt. The anthem ends as it begins, with the conviction, the faith, that our time on earth isn’t all there is.

The piano accompaniment can serve however needed, just for rehearsal purposes, or when and where it might be needed during a performance.

Composed by Sally Whitwell. 21st Century,Contemporary. Octavo. 17 pages. Sally Whitwell #855402. Published by Sally Whitwell (A0.1262362).

On the morning of 2 March 2020, I finished writing the first draft of this song. It was the same morning that the New South Wales Rural Fire Service announced that for the first time since July 2019, the state was free of active bush and grass fires.

At the time it felt quite euphoric. We’d been through a lot. Little did we know what was coming just a few days from then, when the Covid19 global pandemic reached our shores. It’s a virus that would kill millions across the world, and disable millions more, long term. It forced us, globally, into a kind of reckoning the like of which we had never experienced before. Non pharmaceutical controls like lockdowns, mask mandates, social distancing and ventilation standards were employed to keep us safe from this airborne virus, whilst scientists worked round clock to develop vaccines and treatments.

Technically, the declaration of a pandemic is still active, but governments and people have somehow decided for themselves that it is all over. No one takes any precautions any more. Governments have stopped reporting statistics. People who know they are infected are going about their business with no thought for others. Meanwhile, many of the immune-compromised, the disabled, the vulnerable, are unable to safely leave their homes and engage in activities out in the world. I know this, because I am a carer for a vulnerable person.

What this whole exercise has taught me is that people in the world are actually much less kind than I thought they were. Humans do not really care for each other. People attack me for wearing a mask, tell me that I’m virtue signalling and that I look ridiculous (as if I care how I look). I’ve asked questions about workplace Covid safety and been informed that it’s “a bit rich†that I’m asking at all, when everything is now safe. A friend’s diagnosed Long Covid symptoms were cruelly minimised or completely dismissed “Oh, it’s not Covid. How old are you? In your forties? It’s your hormones, it’s the menopause.†The fatal combination of sheer selfishness, rampant misinformation and DISinformation continues, whilst people waltz around spreading a deadly virus with no thought for the grief that will undoubtedly ensue.

It boils down to this: if we want to continue as a species and to have a planet on which to reside, we have to stop with the Self Care and start with the Community Care. A choir is the perfect instrument for expressing these notions, through the unique power of the massed first person plural. My wish for this piece is that it spurs performer and listener alike into some kind of action. Please consider the effect your actions have on others, and on the planet, and make any changes necessary, however inconvenient or difficult they are. Otherwise, there’s really no point.

Sally Whitwell 11 July 2023.

Composed by Christopher R. Brown. Christian,Gospel,Praise & Worship,Sacred. Octavo. 11 pages. Christopher Brown #4725447. Published by Christopher Brown (A0.747204).

About the song: Satan has been decisively defeated. In every battle with the devil, 1 John 4:4 assures us that God is greater. When we feel trapped in sin, God is greater. When we are tempted to doubt, God is greater. When we face trials, God is greater. When we experience great loss or disappointment, God is greater still. He is able to strengthen, help, comfort, and uphold our souls by His power and might regardless of the circumstances in which we find ourselves. This is reason for hope, joy, and praise even in the darkest valley.

Can be performed with piano accompaniment only, OR with additional band members, OR with full orchestra*.

You can purchase individual copies of the vocal part separately on Sheet Music Plus. Performance of this piece requires the purchase of one vocal score per singer.

Lyrics:

Verse 1

When it seems there’s no way out,

He can make a way.

In the darkness of my doubt,

He’s the light of day.

Ev’ry trial that I face,

Comes with His mercy and His grace.

Pre-Chorus 1

Greater is He Who lives in me.

Stronger than the plans of ev’ry enemy.

From sin and death I’ve been set free.

He set me free!

Chorus 1

This is my hope when I’m walking through the valley of the shadow.

This is my joy in the sorrow and the pain.

This is the Truth when I’m caught up in the middle of the battle.

Greater is He that is in me.

Verse 2

When my world begins to shake,

He’s unshakable.

When my circumstances change,

He’s unchangeable.

In ev’ry storm and crashing wave,

My God is powerful to save.

Pre-Chorus 2

Greater is He Who lives in me.

Stronger than the plans of ev’ry enemy.

From sin and death I’ve been set free.

He set me free!

Chorus 2

This is my hope when I’m walking through the valley of the shadow.

This is my joy in the sorrow and the pain.

This is the Truth when I’m caught up in the middle of the battle.

Greater is He that is in me.

Bridge 1

There isn’t any other,

Who has the power, power.

The King of Kings, and Lord of Lords,

We lift Him higher, higher.

Bridge 2

We raise our voices louder,

Our God is stronger, stronger.

The King of Kings, and Lord of Lords,

We lift Him higher, higher.

Chorus 3

This is my hope when I’m walking through the valley of the shadow.

This is my joy in the sorrow and the pain.

This is the Truth when I’m caught up in the middle of the battle.

Greater is He,

Greater is He,

Greater is He that is in me.

Lyrics:
When I'm surrounded by uncertainty
And my fear tries to steal control
There's one thing that is no mystery
Jesus loves me this I know

When I'm flooded with anxiety
Waves of doubt won't drown my soul
There's a peace that rests inside of me
Jesus loves me this I know

Praise the One Who walks beside me through
Mountain high and valley low
My hope is found in this forever Truth
Jesus loves me this I know
Jesus loves me this I know

When my sin says I'm unreachable
Past the point where grace can go
When I feel anything but loveable
Jesus loves me this I know

Praise the One Who walks beside me through
Mountain high and valley low
My hope is found in this forever Truth
Jesus loves me this I know
Jesus loves me this I know

On Christ the Solid Rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
My Saving Grace My only hope
My Jesus loves me this I know

On Christ the Solid Rock I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
My Saving Grace My only hope
My Jesus loves me this I know

Praise the One Who walks beside me through
Mountain high and valley low
My hope is found in this forever Truth
Jesus loves me this I know
Jesus loves me this I know

Praise the One Who walks beside me through
Mountain high and valley low
My hope is found in this forever Truth
Jesus loves me this I know
Jesus loves me this I know
Jesus loves me this I know

Composed by David Rain. Arranged by David Rain. A Cappella,Classical,Contemporary,Renaissance. 6 pages. David Rain, Choral Composer #698441. Published by David Rain, Choral Composer (A0.1094371).

“How heavy lies the heart†has drawn inspiration from the traditional French Christmas carol, “Quelle est cette odeur agréableâ€, which John Gay also set as a boisterous drinking song in the Beggar’s Opera, “Fill every glass, for wine inspires us!†The song also draws inspiration from Josquin’s Missa Pange Lingua. I dedicate this piece to my friends in the composer/singer collective, the Ad hoc Chorale, who tested out this piece in one of our informal workshops and offered valuable comments. Optional endings. Note that choirs have been given the option to choose which of the 3 endings they would like to sing, depending on how they feel the “story line†in the song should best reach its conclusion: (1) The “happy†ending appears to indicate that the narrator has been reunited with the friend or lover who departed. (2) The “less happy†ending plants a seed of doubt that no such reunion has happened; it may be in the narrator’s head. (3) The “even less happy†ending leaves listeners in even more doubt. NB: One day I woke up to the realization that I had independently written four choral works, each of which had evoked a different season, and so it seemed natural to group them together into a choral suite that I have called The Ottawa Four Seasons Suite. “How heavy lies the heart†seemed to work perfectly as the musical representative of an autumnal spirit.
