Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.803461

Composed by Geneva Psalter, 1551. Arranged by Phyllis Hopper. Christmas,Easter,Renaissance,Sacred. Octavo. 10 pages. HopSez Productions #2965873. Published by HopSez Productions (A0.803461).

Comfort, Comfort Now My People is a hymn based on Isaiah 40 (think of the air in Handel's Messiah). It can be sung by a choir (separate mens' and womens' parts) and/or sung by a congregation. Here you have an arrangement with a definite Renaissance feel. I can hear finger cymbals ringing a counter rhythm throughout (sorry, I didn't write it in, but I'm sure you can figure it out). The parts are open and airy and the song has a light, joyous feel to it. While the instruments are published as violin, cello and drone (piano, etc) this should be playable by any pairings of treble and bass instruments that play in C. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed putting together the arrangement! PH Jan2017.

A bold, dramatic choral composition depicting the miracle of Jesus walking on the sea.  Music by Kevin G. Pace.  Text by Mary Ann W. Snowball.

Text:
Drained of strength and in despair, disciples rowed all night
In a storm upon the sea, the Sea of Galilee.
Clashing, crashing inverse winds in darkness without light
Brought the Savior from the mount, from the very heights.

Frightened when they saw Him come, perceiving not his form,
Jesus said, “O, it is I.†The boisterous waves were high.
Peering, nearing as He walked right through the raging storm,
Jesus said, “Be not afraid,†though nature then was torn.

Treading on the water’s edge and almost dawn that morn,
Jesus calmed the troubled men; his strength not at an end.
Talking, walking to the boat, disciples still forlorn,
Powers of divinity were seen as newly born.

“Of a truth thou art the Son,†the very Son who shows
Miracles engulf each heart when faith becomes a part.
“Of a truth thou art the Son,†reveals a witness grown.
Walking on the sea became pure testimony known.

SKU: A0.837495

Composed by Martin Rinkart. Arranged by Brett L. Wery. Christian,Holiday,Praise & Worship,Sacred. Octavo. 12 pages. Sonata Grendel Publishing #5753929. Published by Sonata Grendel Publishing (A0.837495).

SET A: SATB Choir/Organ

(optional brass quintet and timpani-sold separately )

Now Thank We All Our God was originally written ca. 1636 by Protestant minister, Martin Rinkart. The melody is attributed to Lutheran Hymnist, Johann Crüger and was used in three J.S. Bach chorales but the most common version we hear today was harmonized by Felix Mendelssohn in 1840.

Martin Rinkart was a deacon in Eisleben Germany where he served during the Thirty Years’ War. The city of Eisleben and Rinkart’s own home became a sanctuary for political refugees during the war. The resulting overcrowding in the walled city resulted in a horrible plague which hit its peak in 1637. Rinkart was the only surviving pastor in the city and before the plague was over he would preside over 4000 funerals include that of his own wife. Despite this, it was during this time that he wrote Now thank we all our God.

This new setting of Now Thank We All Our God draws on Rinkart’s fierce spirit of optimism and faith in a time of desolation and despair. To paint the picture of the circumstances in which Rinkart wrote the hymn, this setting opens with the text from Psalm 13:

How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?

The setting turns quickly, in an act of disruptive optimism and faith, to a lopsided dance of joy. In the end, the setting returns to the opening question  of Psalm 13, How long? only to be answered by Rinkart’s declaration, Gifts of love today!

If through tribulation you pass through today,

Do not despair; hold on your way.

If thou art in perils on every side,

The Lord will give you strength to abide.

If your life’s in a pit, or you’re cast in the deep,

The Lord will watch o’er you. His vigilance keep.

If blackness surrounds you from billowing waves,

The Lord is nearby, your soul to save.

If all hell gapes open its mouth after you,

Do not give up, He’ll see you through.

No man need you fear so don’t go astray,

Just cling to the Rod and hold on your way.

Christ is the Life, the Truth, and the Way;

Your years are known, yea even your days.

Trial give you experience, to your goodness display,

Look to the Lord and hold on your way.

Composed by Mary Hamilton and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (altered by James F. Linzey). Arranged by James F. Linzey. Classical,Historic,Patriotic,Religious,Sacred. 4 pages. Military Bible Association #1044469. Published by Military Bible Association (A0.1465872).

History of the United States Air Force and the Air Force Hymn

On September 18, 1947, the National Security Act of 1947 created the National Military Establishment and the United States Air Force. The National Military Establishment later became the Department of Defense. The Air Force was part of the Army Air Corps since August 1, 1907. It had the oversight of military aviation for land-based operations.

The organizational development of the Air Force is as follows: Aeronautical Division, Signal Corps (1 August 1907 – 18 July 1914), Aviation Section, Signal Corps (18 July 1914 – 20 May 1918), Division of Military Aeronautics (20 May 1918 – 24 May 1918), Air Service, U.S. Army (24 May 1918 – 2 July 1926), U.S. Army Air Corps (2 July 1926 – 20 June 1941), the U.S. Army Air Forces (20 June 1941 – 17 September 1947), and the United States Air Force, 18 September 1947 – present), and the separation of the United States Air Force Space Command as the United States Space Force  (20 December 2019 – present).

The Air Force has been involved in World War 1, World War II, the Cold War and the Korean conflict, the Vietnam conflict, combat operations such as Operation Eagle Claw, the invasion of Grenada (1983), the bombing of Libya (1986), the invasion of Panama (1989), Operation Desert Storm, the Gulf War, Bosnia and Kosovo, the Global War on Terror, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Mary Christian Dundas Hamilton (24 May 1850 - 10 June 1943) was a Scottish writer and poet. She is known for writing “A Hymn for Aviators” (1915). It was known as
“Lord, Guard and Guide the Men Who Fly,” and also as the United States Air Force Hymn. It was set to Mozart's “Dona Nobis Pacem,” a waltz. Various phrases and verses were used in the United States Navy Hymn, “Eternal Father, Strong to Save,” and alluded to in the United States Space Force Hymn, “Creator of the Universe.”

Former Air Force Chaplain and Officer, theologian and hymnist, Major James F. Linzey (Ret.), believed that military hymns should not be waltzes. So he converted the timing of Mozart’s piece to four-four timing, giving the Air Force Hymn traditional timing that is fit for a hymn. James Linzey is the General Editor of the New Tyndale Version (NTV) Bible translation.

Three Japanese Poems. Composed by Staffan Storm. Winter. Octavo. 12 pages. Bo Ejeby Forlag - Digital #1366. Published by Bo Ejeby Forlag - Digital (BJ.1366).

8.27 x 11.7 inches.

Three ancient Japanese poems on snow, translated to English by Steven D. Carter:

At Tago Bay, by Yamabe no Akahito (early 8th century)

In the early light, by Sakanoue no Korenori (early 10th century)

I look out and snow is falling, by Takayama Sozei (-1455)
The sonorities in Staffan Storm's settings are often dense, but floating and not intrusive. This is not romantic music, but certainly full of feeling. Storm conjures up the symbolic experience of standing and gazing at the heavens beneath the light of the moon, with the quiet flurry of snow in the air, so palpable that you can almost hear it. - Karin Ekedahl in the booklet of the recording by Erik Westberg Vocal Ensemble, Amor Vita Mors from 2018.

By Queen Latifah. By Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. Arranged by Kathleen McGuire. Blues,Broadway,Musical/Show. Octavo. 8 pages. Kathleen McGuire #722501. Published by Kathleen McGuire (A0.1121330).

This soulful anthem from the musical (and film) HAIRSPRAY ends in an uplifting climax that brings audience members to their feet. The choir parts are not difficult to learn. A strong Broadway-style soloist is needed (preferably an alto or tenor) to sell the song, delivering a message of resilience and triumph in the face of racism. Although the musical is set in the 1950s, the theme is highly relevant today in the climate of Black Lives Matter. To add to the style of the piece, bass guitar and drums are recommended (easy to ad lib from the score). You can find a recording of the TTBB version of this arrangement on the album DIVA'S REVENGE performed by the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus. (Also available: TTBB).
