The melody is mainly in the soprano part, apart from verse 2 where it is taken by the tenors. The arrangement moves from a melody line (which could be sung by a soloist rather than all the sopranos) over 'do do' backing, to a polyphonic second verse, before moving into a homophonic structure with minor splits in the alto and tenor parts and finally full eight part harmony in the fourth verse. The big challenge is to introduce enough variety of texture and harmony to sustain six verses, without obscuring the essential simplicity. The piano part is for rehearsal only.
