Skye refers to the Island of Skye, a large island off the northwest coast os Scotland. There are several texts to this song; all refer, more or less, to an uprising of Scottish dissidents against the English is 1745-46. After their defeat, they fled to the Island of Skye. The text used here by the poet Robert Louis Stevenson. Scholars attribute the first half of the melody to an old se chantey and suspect thea the second half may have benn written by Annie MacLeod. ARRANGEMENT DETAILSVoicing SSATB Choir and Piano AccompanimentDifficulty IntermediateGENRE DETAILS Genres A Cappella, Classical, Film/TV, Holiday, Wedding.

Choral Choir,Choral (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1319814 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Celtic,Folk,Historic,Irish. 10 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #908371. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1319814). This is one of the most well-known of all British folksongs and refers to real historical events. It has been used in film and television programs and known to almost everyone in Britain. Skye (also known as ā€œThe Isle of Skyeā€) is the largest island of the Inner Hebrides. With an area of about 640 square miles, the island is about sixty miles long and lies close to the Scottish mainland. Ā The boat in the song (ā€œSpeed bonny boatā€) refers to a small sailing ship that in 1746 ā€œcarried the lad who was born to be kingā€ to the Isle of Skye. The lad in question was Prince Charles Edward Stuart known affectionately as ā€œBonnie Prince Charlie.ā€ The song also refers to the Battle of Culloden of April 1746, the last ever battle on British soil, fought between the British Army and the army of Bonnie Prince Charlie. Ā In June 1746 and disguised as a maid-servant, Charles was secretly transported from the Hebridean island of Benbecula to the more southerly Isle of Skye. This is the event to which the song refers.Ā The Skye Boat Song has its roots in a traditional Gaelic melody. The lyrics in this arrangement are the familiar ones written in the 1870s by Sir Harold Edwin Boulton. This is an easy SATB arrangement, with all vocal parts well within range and difficult leaps avoided. There are no divisi sections or solos, though can obviously create solos if you want. The keyboard part also avoids technical hurdles. Your singers will surely enjoy this joyful melody, with its contrasting verse and attractive counter-melodies. Vocal ranges are Soprano: D4 ā€“ D5; Alto: A3 (only once) ā€“ B4; Tenor: D3ā€“D4; Bass: G2-B3.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Digital Download SKU: A0.953939 Composed by Andrew J. Boyle. Arranged by Lyrical Publishing. Celtic,Folk,World. Octavo. 8 pages. Lyrical Publishing #2897793. Published by Lyrical Publishing (A0.953939). Will Ye Go to the Indies:  As a young man Scotlandā€™s great poet, Robert Burns, fell in love with a girl he called Highland Mary, and persuaded her to emigrate with him to the West Indies. In the text of this song we hear the poem he wrote about those huge decisions. Tragically, Mary died before they could start their life together. Many years later, in 1792, Burns set the poem to an old Scottish folk song. To his publisher he explained: You must know, that all my earlier love-songs were the breathings of ardent Passion; and thoā€™ it might have been easy in aftertimes to have given them a polish, yet that polish would have defaced the legend of my heart.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1093336 Composed by Scottish air attributed to Anne Campbelle MacLeod. Arranged by Scott S. Stewart. A Cappella,Celtic,Film/TV,Folk,Irish. Octavo. 7 pages. Scott S. Stewart #697408. Published by Scott S. Stewart (A0.1093336). ā€œSing me a Song of a Lad who is Goneā€, text by Robert Louis Stevenson, to a tune attributed to Anne Campbelle MacLeod who heard boatmen break into ā€œa Gaelic iorram (or rowing song)ā€ while on a trip to the Isle of Skye. MacLeodā€™s tune evolved into todayā€™s ā€œThe Skye Boat Songā€, and has since morphed into the Theme Song for the popular television series ā€“ Outlander. MacLeodā€™s melody originally had lyrics by Sir Harold Edwin Boulton (1859-1935) published in 1884. Stevenson disliked the sentimentality of Boultonā€™s words so much he composed his own in 1892. This arrangement is scored for a 4-part SATB ensemble to be performed a cappella. Performance time: 3:05+.

Choral Choir (SATB divisi) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.819480 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Sara Garrard. A Cappella,Contemporary,Folk,Graduation,World. Octavo. 8 pages. Sara Garrard #6097335. Published by Sara Garrard (A0.819480). Arrangement of the traditional Scottish folk song. Suitable for full choir or a quintet / small a capella ensemble, this is a challenging arrangement that will reward with rich harmonies and interweaving lines.Rehearsal recording.A possible story being told through these lyrics (of which many variants exist) is of a soldier's farewell - taken prisoner and sentenced to be executed, he will take the low road home through death - to a friend or lover with whom he shared an idyllic lost youth. The verses tell of the beauty of the landscape of their childhood home and how nature keeps going, spring coming again each year, regardless of their trials and sadness.   The world does na ken how we're greetin': The world does not know how we're grieving

Choral Choir,Choral (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1243842 Composed by Charles Wesley and Trad. Scottish Melody. Arranged by Nathaniel Hontz. Christian,Folk,Religious,Sacred,Traditional. 10 pages. TigerSong LLC #838814. Published by TigerSong LLC (A0.1243842). Charles Wesley's poem Jacob Wrestling is better known by its first line, Come, O Thou Traveler Unknown. A sermon in itself, the poem recontextualizes the struggle of the Old Testament story of Jacob wrestling with an angel to current believers' struggles with faith. Isaac Watts, one of the fathers of English hymnody, stated that this poem was worth all the verses [he] had written. It is set here to a traditional Scottish melody, Candler or Ye Banks and Braes of Bonnie Doon, and arranged for SATB choir. It opens with a tenor soli, joined by the other voices. When the speaker makes demands of his divine opponent, the anthem modally shifts to the parallel minor. Eventually, the choir wrestles, as the four wrestling verses of the poem are sung at the same time in a 4-part canon. Finally, the speaker's epiphany is accompanied by a key change and a joyous conclusion in 4-part harmony.
