Songs My Mother Taught Me is a song originally composed in 1880 for voice and piano by Antonín Dvořák. It is the fourth of seven songs from his cycle Gypsy Songs Op. 55. This song, in particular, has achieved widespread popularity. This sentimental song, filled with warm emotion, has been performed and recorded by a number of well-known artists as diverse as Glenn Miller and Fritz Kreisler. And, the influence of Czech folk-song is immediately recognizable. This arrangement has been expanded to include 4-part mixed choir (English text), organ and brass quintet. Knowing this definition, I tried to make my choral setting of this text feel like a battle, particularly by using rhythmic whispering in the 10/8 section.
