Robert Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943) was born in Canada before moving to the Unites States at the age of 11. He began studying piano at an early age and went on to be the first black American to graduate from Oberlin Conservatory of Music. Throughout his career he worked as a composer, organist, pianist, choral director and music professor; he received many awards for his music and writing and spent a period at the Fontainebleau School of Music south of Paris where he studied with Nadia Boulanger. Dett became well known for incorporating tunes and and elements of African American folk songs and spirituals into classical music.Listen to the Lambs is scored for mixed unaccompanied chorus with solo soprano part and was originally published by G. Schirmer in 1914. It became one of his most famous choral works and was featured in The Oxford Book of Spirituals and Choral Music: A Norton Historical Anthology. There are modern recordings of the anthem performed by chamber choirs but Dett himself conducted a 900-voice performance of the work at Hampton University, Virginia where he was the director of the music department between 1928 and 1932.

It has been performed by church choirs, professional choirs and amateur choirs, as well as university choirs.I was very fortunate to have Anders Paulsson believe in the beauty and significance of Feet of Jesus. He promoted it in Sweden and returned to the United States to perform it in San Francisco. In May of 1997, the Saint Jacobs Chamber Choir under the direction of Gary Graden recorded Feet of Jesus, along with some other original works by Anders Paulsson and arrangements of spirituals. I requested that the soloists be African-Americans, Marymal Holmes and John Williams. The cross-cultural exchange was a vibrant one and proved to be enlightening. The very idea of what was truly considered spiritual in music was put to the question and answered admirably by Gary Graden and his marvelous Swedish choir. The BIS Northern Lights CD was released under the title Spirituals.

Et incarnatus est is a set of sequences in an invertible counterpoint that ends with the transition to Crucifixus. The Crucifixus is rendered as a continuous repetition of a single tone (the B) by the baritone solo (Christ) on the background of choral responses in the late-Romantic harmonic language (neo-Riemannian, equal-division of the octave, Yavorski's Tritonal equilibrium, etc.). The bariton part is given a note beyond the baritone range. Extended techniques are welcome here. The high sopranos continue the ostinati in the background of the low piano octaves. The Et resurrexit is written as a pure atmospheric phenomenon--disappearing in clouds. The triptych ends with a quotation from the Gospel of St. Luke read by the baritone. THese three numbers can be performed as an anthem during the weeks of Lent or Easter.
