When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, written by the Father of English Hymnody, Isaac Watts, in 1707 and later matched with Lowell Mason’s 1824 tune, HAMBURG, has long stood at the forefront of English hymnody.This arrangement, taken from my Passion Week cantata, Wounded, Bleeding, Still Proceeding, allows the full talent-spectrum of the Body of Christ to contemplate His sacrifice and offer their devotion.The first two stanzas feature an alto/soprano duet, set in a minor key with frequent diminished and augmented chords to reflect the despair and loss of a witness to the crucifixion. The entire third stanza, set for SATB chorus, never really moves off the F minor tonic until the end. That, and the relentless pounding of the bass line, ponders the witnesses anguish and our vicarious experience of it through Scripture. So, sing these stanzas sadly – they are sad! When the choir enters, be sure to observe the swelling crescendos/diminuendos as the sorrow and love mingle together.The fourth stanza offers optional congregational participation and may be used to provide a responsorial to the Word of God or a preparation for the Table. The choir sings this stanza in four part harmony as the congregation joins on the melody. It stays in a major key and closely follows the traditional consonances used in Lowell Mason’s harmonization; thus, the choral parts will feel familiar and the congregational melody will flow naturally. Take the text literally (Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.) and sing it firmly, enthusiastically, passionately, but never triumphantly. Sing it as a song of personal devotion to commit all that you have, all that you are, and all that you will ever be, to the one who humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross (Phil 2:8b) so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Cor 5:21)The music is well within the grasp of any ensemble competent with traditional SATB anthems. The piano/organ accompaniments are straightforward yet very colorful. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross is an unapologetic Christian worship anthem suitable for sacred services, yet does not compromise on artistic expression.The parts provided in this version include a full score, a piano-vocal octavo (which may be performed alone), and organ and timpani/percussion parts. Stewart (A0.1211960). “What If I Seek for Love� (1601), by English composer Robert Jones (c.1577-1617), who was one of the most prolific composers and lutenists of his day.  Of the more popular musical forms of English Renaissance (the late 15th century to the early 1600’s) was the lute song: a piece for single voice accompanied by the lute.  Most lute songs are about love and tended to be a rather melancholy affair with disdainful ladies refusing to acknowledge the ardent advances of hopeful lovers – as is “What If I Seek for Love�.  This 2023 setting is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble and keyboard accompaniment.  It can be performed either a cappella or with accompaniment, the SATB voicings will stand alone  The simple melody and poetry of Jones is retained and embellished with the piano accompaniment.  This is an excellent piece for young singers, introducing them to style, form and technique.  Performance time: 1:30+-.

It also candidly points out many faults in Christian behavior, which is an honest quality I love about this song. Youth groups and praise-bands often perform this song; however, I have arranged the accompaniment more solemnly to highlight the text in a more meditative manner so that it is also accessible for adult church choirs.

Davila (A0.891025).   Songs from the Book Of Revelation is a powerful new cantata (SATB) and piano accompaniment consisting of 14 original songs from the book of Revelation that may be performed on any occasion throughout the year. I wrote this work during the height of the Coronavirus pandemic. I was inspired to praise God and compose new music using text from the book of Revelation. Next to each song title, I have provided the bible verses for easy access. I arranged the songs in chronological order, but may be sung in any order. Most of the songs are easy to medium in difficulty level, including the piano accompaniment. One of the songs titled Amen! Amen! (Revelation 7:12) is sung and played in whole tone scale and is challenging to perform. There is a couple of short solos, and acapella sections throughout the cantata. This classification was devised by Phillips Barry (1880–1937), who was a pioneering Early American folk hymn specialist and folk tune collector. The melody of O Tell Me Where the Dove Has Flown is in the Dorian mode. It is repeated five times in this edition, making the design of the entire work strophic in structure. The text authorship of the verses is unknown, rendering them as a traditional text. I think it’s a very effective work, but sadly the Musical Director of the choir for whom it was written thought ‘the parts were too high’ and it was never performed. She may have been right about the alto part, but it was the way she said it after I presented her with 40 copies for her choir. Guess what? I didn’t write another thing for them, and no, I’m not telling you which choir it was, but they are from Exmouth in Devon and they were formed in 1997.
