Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.976711

Composed by Isaac Watts / Lowell Mason. Arranged by Robert Myers. Christian,Easter,Sacred. Octavo. 31 pages. WheatMyer Music #4775085. Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.976711).

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, written by the Father of English Hymnody, Isaac Watts, in 1707 and later matched with Lowell Mason’s 1824 tune, HAMBURG, has long stood at the forefront of English hymnody.

This arrangement, taken from my Passion Week cantata, Wounded, Bleeding, Still Proceeding, allows the full talent-spectrum of the Body of Christ to contemplate His sacrifice and offer their devotion.

The first two stanzas feature an alto/soprano duet, set in a minor key with frequent diminished and augmented chords to reflect the despair and loss of a witness to the crucifixion. The entire third stanza, set for SATB chorus, never really moves off the F minor tonic until the end. That, and the relentless pounding of the bass line, ponders the witnesses anguish and our vicarious experience of it through Scripture. So, sing these stanzas sadly – they are sad! When the choir enters, be sure to observe the swelling crescendos/diminuendos as the sorrow and love mingle together.

The fourth stanza offers optional congregational participation and may be used to provide a responsorial to the Word of God or a preparation for the Table. The choir sings this stanza in four part harmony as the congregation joins on the melody. It stays in a major key and closely follows the traditional consonances used in Lowell Mason’s harmonization; thus, the choral parts will feel familiar and the congregational melody will flow naturally. Take the text literally (Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.) and sing it firmly, enthusiastically, passionately, but never triumphantly. Sing it as a song of personal devotion to commit all that you have, all that you are, and all that you will ever be, to the one who humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross (Phil 2:8b) so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Cor 5:21)

The music is well within the grasp of any ensemble competent with traditional SATB anthems. The piano/organ accompaniments are straightforward yet very colorful. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross is an unapologetic Christian worship anthem suitable for sacred services, yet does not compromise on artistic expression.

The parts provided in this version include a full score, a piano-vocal octavo (which may be performed alone), and organ and timpani/percussion parts. Neither organ or timpani are required but adding either or both provides a deep and rich experience. Parts for reduced orchestra (strings and single winds) are available separately.

Composed by Colin Kirkpatrick. A Cappella,Christian,Easter,Praise & Worship,Sacred. Octavo. 12 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #4405502. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522224).

My Song Is Love Unknown is a known best as a hymn by Samuel Crossman, written in 1664. It is predominantly used as a hymn for Good Friday usually in a setting by John Ireland who evidently composed it over lunch one day. This is a completely new SATB setting of Crossman’s wonderful text by Colin Kirkpatrick. In this setting there are opportunities for alto and tenor solos though they can be sung tutti if more appropriate. The keyboard part is essential though there is an a capella section in the middle. The highest note in the soprano part is one A flat above the treble staff. This is an accessible arrangement with rich harmonies and soaring melodic lines. It is sure to be a success at Easter occasions. Other SATB titles in this series of three Easter canticles are Alone Thy goes forth, O Lord (Text by Peter Abelard 1079-1142) and A Time to Watch, A time to Pray (Text by John Mason Neale 1818-1866. In the audio sample, soprano is played by the flute, alto by the oboe, tenor by the clarinet and bass by the bassoon.

Composed by Chris Gordon. Contemporary. Octavo. 18 pages. Cool Wind Music Digital #3029087. Published by Cool Wind Music Digital (A0.841250).

A setting of a very powerful poem by English poet, Ted Hughes, about the onset of autumn in an English (Yorkshire) garden and the surrounding countryside.  It is full of pathos and passion, harmony and dissonance, chaos and peace - just like English weather!

This is a very individual and innovative choral setting of Hughes' poem which is, itself, rich in 'meaty' metaphor and colour - and the composer is a vegetarian! It evokes a savage Nature within a savage landscape where humans and animals compete for space and for food. It is October, the fields and woods and gardens of rural Yorkshire are readying themselves for the cold and desolation (and despair) of winter which isn't far away in time. 'A glass, half-filled with wine, left out(side) To the dark heaven all night, by dawn Has dreamed a premonition of ice across its eye as if the ice-age had begun its heave.'   That is only two and a half stanzas but you see from these lines that there are veiled threats of (Nature's) violence in the heavy tread of the poet's slowly-building angst over what is happening in the surrounding countryside - and his fear grows, and his awe grows, with every line. There is even fear underlining the very last line: 'And now it is about to start.' Winter is creeping closer and closer towards the house and it will not be pleasant to experience!

I have tried to instil a little of this in the music which keeps skidding from consonance to dissonance and back to consonance. Sometimes the dissonance piles up, like snow driven by the wind piles up into deep banks; sometimes the music relaxes into stillness and calm (painted in tonal music) like a crisp, mild late autumn or early winter's day when the sun warms the landscape and life appears bearable, tolerable. I hope this adds to the song's 'charm'. It wasn't easy to write: sometimes the right music was elusive. The music ends with the word 'October' repeated three times, with voices overlapping in a little canon. This conjures up the wistful feelings of the poet as he looks out onto a peaceful scene, soon to be filled with all manner of 'natural violence', while his inner peace will soon be shattered by the mayhem about to be unleashed around him.

Setting Ted Hughes is no easy task. It is for choirs and choirmasters to judge if I have succeeded in conveying the 'sense and sensibility' of a classic 20th century English poem.

Rock - a worship musical.

Full piano score with SATB choir, solo parts and narration.

Starting in Caesarea, Peter's story unfolds in flashback.

From fishing, his 3 years on the road alongside Jesus and the disciples, his triumphs and failures. Jesus calls Peter 'the Rock' - but we see that only in Christ, and filled with His Spirit, is Peter on solid ground.

Synopsis
Traditional words introduce the theme of the Musical: Jesus is our ROCK OF AGES, but the story starts IN CAESAREA BESIDE THE SEA. Here, centurion Cornelius declares I’ve had a vision - but who can explain it, who can help? Cornelius’ household tell of Simon Peter, a disciple of Jesus, and we are taken back to Galilee when Peter, a fisherman, WORKING IN THE FAMILY BUSINESS, hears Jesus’ call to leave your nets and leave your boats. He responds I WILL FOLLOW YOU.

For three years Peter follows Jesus, and when challenged declares YOU ARE MESSIAH, the Son of the living God! Jesus replies On this rock I will build my church, then, ominously, points towards Jerusalem. He and his followers eventually arrive in the city at Passover, and during the meal they wonder IN THIS BREAD, IN THIS WINE, is there love for me? At first reluctant, Peter allows Jesus to wash his feet.

Events turn against Jesus; he is arrested, and Peter is afraid. The taunt SURELY YOU MUST HAVE BEEN WITH HIM sees Peter denying he ever knew Jesus. Then their eyes meet across the courtyard, and Peter is devastated by his own failure. But even at such an awful time as this, THE LOOK OF LOVE contains acceptance and hope.

WERE YOU THERE WHEN THEY CRUCIFIED MY LORD? Peter wasn’t - he was in hiding along with many of the disciples. But after the resurrection, Jesus greets Peter and the others in Galilee: THIS IS THE PLACE – I am the Lord who comes to meet you here. Jesus asks: SIMON PETER, DO YOU LOVE ME? After being asked three times Peter reaches reality: Lord, you know everything … you know how much I love you! and receives the commission Feed my sheep.

Peter and the disciples return to Jerusalem, and wait for the promised Holy Spirit. At Pentecost the Spirit comes, and as A CHOSEN PEOPLE, the followers of Jesus receive his power. Peter preaches, and thousands believe and respond JUST AS I AM … O Lamb of God I come. The Church is born and in the power of the Spirit begin WORKING IN THE FATHER’S BUSINESS, doing the things that Jesus did!

Peter eventually arrives IN CAESAREA BESIDE THE SEA. He shares his vision with Cornelius and his household, and declares God has no favourites … you can be saved too … if you believe in Jesus. They believe, receive the power of the Spirit, and Gentiles also become members of the Chosen People, called out of darkness into wonderful light! Peter’s vision is fulfilled – the Gospel is for all who believe in Jesus. Peter declares HE IS THE STONE that the builders rejected … on Jesus the ROCK I will build my life! .

John Mason Neale, the writer of the text is best known for the hymns Good Christian Men, Rejoice, the carol Good King Wenceslas and the advent hymn O come, O come, Emmanuel. This attractive light arrangement uses divisi sopranos at one point and also includes an a cappella section. It’s a tuneful arrangement, easy on the ear and not especially difficult.

Other SATB titles in this series of three Easter canticles are My Song is Love Unknown (Text by Samuel Crossman 1624-1683) and Alone Thy goes forth, O Lord (Text by Peter Abelard 1079-1142). A choral setting of the ancient vesper hymn for choir and organ, composed for the choir of St. John Cantius Parish, Chicago, and dedicated to the memory of Gordon McMillan. This was recorded on Saturday, June 29, 2019, in the glorious surroundings of St. John Cantius, and was premiered at Mass on Sunday, June 30, 2019.

Decóra lux æternitátis, áuream
Diem beátis irrigávit ígnibus,
Apostolórum quæ corónat
Príncipes,Reísque in astra líberam pandit viam.
Mundi Magíster atque cæli Iánitor,

Per énsis ille, hic per crucis victor necem,

O Roma felix, quæ duórum

In unitáte, quæ gubérnat ómnia,
Per univérsa sæculórum sǽcula.Amen.

The beauteous light of God's eternal majesty
Streams down in golden rays to grace this holy day
Which crowned the princes of the Apostles' glorious choir,
And unto guilty mortals showed the heavenward way.
The teacher of the world and keeper of heaven's gate,
Rome's founders twain and rulers too of every land,
Triumphant over death by sword and shameful cross,
With laurel crowned are gathered to the eternal band.
O happy Rome! who in thy martyr princes' blood,
A twofold stream, art washed and doubly sanctified.
All earthly beauty thou alone outshinest far,
Empurpled by their outpoured life-blood's glorious tide.
All honour, power, and everlasting jubilee
To him who all things made and governs here below,
To God in essence One, and yet in persons Three,
Both now and ever, while unending ages flow.Amen.
