Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1097306

Composed by Peter Cornelius/Philipp Nicolai. Arranged by William J. Bullock. 19th Century,A Cappella,Christmas,Holiday,Spiritual. Octavo. 7 pages. Sigma Squared Music #701255. Published by Sigma Squared Music (A0.1097306).

This famous song is from the cycle Weihnachtslieder (“Christmas Songsâ€) by the deeply spiritual German composer Peter Cornelius. Composed in 1856 and revised in 1859 and 1870, the cycle is one of the composer’s most popular works. The perspicuity and clarity of its music and verse (Cornelius wrote both) reflect the composer’s engaging and candid temperament. The poetic message of the angular vocal line is cleverly bolstered by the subliminal message of the smoothly flowing accompanying chorale, How Brightly Shines the Morning Star by Philipp Nicolai (1556–1608). Originally scored for piano, the chorale is sung in this arrangement by a four-part mixed chorus.

Sleepers Wake. Composed by Carl Friedrich Zelter. This edition: separate part. Choral Treasury. Downloadable, Individual part. Schott Music - Digital #Q20512. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q20512).

German.

With Carl Friedrich Zelter's motet Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme, Hermann Max, editor of the Choral Treasury series, has uncovered a real treasure. The three-verse text of the motet for mixed choir (SATB) and basso continuo was written by Friedrich Gottlob Klopstock who kept close to the Advent song of the same name by Philipp Nicolai. During Zelter's lifetime, the motet enjoyed great popularity. And quite rightly so: For the music teacher and friend of Goethe turned out to be a composer with an extraordinary sense of tone. An introductory choral movement is followed by a captivating bass aria which can be optionally sung by all basses of the choir. The piece culminates in an elaborate virtuoso fugue with an interwoven cantus firmus in the bass. A demanding, yet highly rewarding rarity in church music!
