Motette nach Gedichten von Kurt Marti. Composed by Heinz Holliger. This edition: choral score. Schott Chamber Choir. Downloadable, Choral score. Duration 25 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q17858. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q17858).

German.

The writings of the Swiss pastor and poet Kurt Marti are characterised by a wide-ranging discussion on belief which frequently takes on a political dimension. This also applies to the poems which Heinz Holliger has selected for his work hölle himmel: a vision of life after death is accompanied by numerous other more worldly themes ranging from the unbridled avarice of multinational companies to the recognition that ’atomic waste will kill our grandchildren’.

FĂŒr gemischten Chor und Orchester. Composed by Hans Werner Henze. This edition: study score. Music Of Our Time. Downloadable, Study score. Duration 55 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q3162. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q3162).

German.

The theme of Henze’s Ninth Symphony is his German homeland as he remembers it during the days of his youth and during the war years. He has written this work in homage to all the people who fought back against the oppression of the Third Reich and sacrificed their lives for freedom of thought. Hans-Ulrich Treichel adapted the text from a poem by Anna Seghers. Henze has called the symphony ‘an apotheosis of the terrible and the painful’. The pinnacle of his prolific and varied Ɠuvre, it is worlds apart from ‘Freude schöner Götterfunken’.

My Ninth Symphony deals with my German homeland – as it appeared to me when I was a young man, during the war, and even earlier. Instead of hymning joy, the beautiful divine spark, the men and women of my Ninth Symphony spend the evening conjuring up a world of horror and persecution that is still with us today and that continues to cast its shadows over us. SKU: IZ.VMF221

Composed by Richard Sorce. Octavo. 13 pages. Imagine Music - Digital #VMF221. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.VMF221).

8.5 x 11 inches.

The poem A Psalm of Life by H.W. Longfellow is a testament to viewing life in the most positive way, and not by dwelling on its hardships or past crises. Nowhere is it written that this life journey should or must be viewed in any negative way.

Modulations that occur in several areas are meant to emphasize critical ideas of the poem, and the performers should take note of the melodic stress that occurs among the various parts (See measures 33 and 41). Dynamics are important in relaying the meaning of the text and should be observed, although the conductor should feel free to augment these whenever she or he deems it necessary. As always, relaying the meaning of the words through the music should always be considered the primary goal of the performance.

To the axis of the skies;
Stars that soothe and stars that bless
With a sweet forgetfulness
Only when my round is o’er
Shall the past disturb thy door.

SKU: BJ.1481

Composed by HĂ„kan Svensson. Secular. 12 pages. Bo Ejeby Forlag - Digital #1481. Published by Bo Ejeby Forlag - Digital (BJ.1481).

8.27 x 11.7 inches.

In 'The peace of wild things', the American poet Wendell Berry (born 1934) deals with existential anxiety. Though published in 1968, the message is just as urgent today. Our news feeds shower us with reports about war, climate and environmental catastrophes, and about authoritarian regimes advancing their positions. What will become of us? What kind of world are we passing on to our children?
This poem gives me a ray of hope in the midst of despair, offering a moment’s rest while my own – and all mankind’s – smallness is revealed. It also allows me to sense the presence of something greater.
My musical interpretation is based on these reflections. The conflict between anxiety and peace, dissonance and consonance, open textures versus clusters. The piece and its phrases are well-suited to interpretation, and to being performed with a great deal of freedom. – HĂ„kan Svensson.

Trumpet calls echo through this arrangement: you'll find them in all the parts. For SATB chorus, sometimes in unison, sometimes in two parts, the piece moves to its soaring conclusion, “Great Creator, give us guidance, Till our goals and yours are one.” Duration 2:45.

Using the text of a beautiful poem by Shirley Erena Murray, this anthem for intergenerational choirs (children, youth, and adults) features a gently flowing melody that later joins a secondary tune. The piece culminates as both melodies occur simultaneously, leading to a quiet, reflective ending. Adults singers can be substituted in the absence of children and youth choirs. This anthem was commissioned by Choristers Guild for the 2002 Choristers Guild Summer Seminars in Kansas City, Missouri and Grand Rapids, Michigan.

SKU: A0.841363

Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn, Samuel Arnold, and William H. Cummings. Arranged by Michele Galvagno. Christian,Christmas,Praise & Worship,Sacred. Octavo. 18 pages. Artistic Score Engraving di Galvagno Michele #6098159. Published by Artistic Score Engraving di Galvagno Michele (A0.841363).

This year's Christmas publication choice fell on a song very dear to me: Hark! The herald angels sing. The text, inspired by Luke’s Gospel (2:14), appears for the first time in a collection of Christmas carols called Hymns and Sacred Poems in 1739, jointly written by Charles Wesley (1707-1788 ) and George Whitefield (1714-1770), two of the founding members of the Methodist movement.

The version we know today is the one adapted by William H. Cummings (1831-1915) from the section Vaterland, in deinen Gauen of the Festgesang zum Gutenbergfest, WoO 9, by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy (1809-1847). The story, however, is more complex and articulated than that.

The original version of the text, written by Wesley, bearing the title Hymn for Christmas-Day, had received only slow and solemn music for its verses, music now almost completely discarded. Also, his original opening lines were Hark! How all the welkin rings / Glory to the King of Kings .

The version that has been passed to us is the result of alterations made by different hands, especially those of Whitefield, who changed the initial couplet into the one we know today.

In 1840-one hundred years after the publication of Hymns and sacred Poems-Mendelssohn composed a cantata commemorating Johann Gutenberg’s invention of movable-type printing. The English musician William H. Cummings finally adapted Mendelssohn’s music around 1855 in order to fit the music to the verses and give it its present look.

In this edition we propose the version that every listener expects to hear when reading the title on the programme and, immediately after, one of the few original versions that have reached us in their entirety, that is the one set to music by Samuel Arnold (1740-1802) and available today in The British Minstrel, and Musical and Literary Miscellany, vol. 3, published in 1843.

The proposed instrumentations are those of the classical string quartet and the cello quartet. Both variants are very simple to perform and are certainly suitable for small string ensembles formed in musical schools. In the cello quartet version, the only relatively complex part is that of the first cello, which should be left to the teacher or to a student able to play up to the 7th position without excessive troubles.

I hope this music can bring you the serenity that made me prepare it.

Composed by Todd Marchand. A Cappella,Christian,Christmas,Folk,Sacred. 4 pages. Con Spirito Music #1071742. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1495196).

Jesus Christ the Apple Tree is the commonly used title for a poem published under the heading Christ compared to an Apple-tree in the August 1761 issue of The Spiritual Magazine, a London periodical for Calvinist Baptists.

Above the poem in the publication are words of its author:

Gentlemen,
Having spent some of my vacant time in the composition of short pieces of Divine Poetry, have sent you the following, by way of specimen; which, if thought worthy of a place in your magazine, shall communicate the others regularly. I am your well-wisher and constant reader, R.H.

R.H. is today believed to most likely be the Rev. Richard Hutchins, a Calvinist Baptist clergyman then serving in Long Buckby, Northamptonshire. The poem's first known appearance in a hymnal, and in America, was in 1784 in Divine Hymns, or Spiritual Songs: for the use of Religious Assemblies and Private Christians compiled by Joshua Smith, a lay Baptist minister from New Hampshire. Because of its popularity in New England churches thereafter, it has often been wrongly attributed to an anonymous early American poet or to Smith.

The poem may be an allusion to the apple tree in Song of Solomon 2:3 (As the apple tree among the trees of the wood, so is my beloved among the sons. I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste), which has been interpreted as a metaphor for Jesus. It also alludes to other descriptions of the tree of life in both the Old and New Testaments.

Primitive yet profound, Jesus Christ the Apple Tree has been set to music by many composers, including a very popular setting by Elizabeth Poston (1905-1987). This new setting for unaccompanied SATB voices captures the rustic quality of the text with a rising-and-falling folksong-like melody, attractively harmonized.
