SKU: A0.1347345

Composed by George Coles & James Montgomery. Arranged by Stephen Jensen & Jill Jensen. Christian,Religious,Sacred. 10 pages. Stephen & Jill Jensen #932103. Published by Stephen & Jill Jensen (A0.1347345).

This beautiful hymn ties closely to the message found in Matthew 25:35-40.Ā  Verses 1-3 (often sung in worship services) are familiar to many, while one of the most touching verses (#7) deserves to be heard more. This arrangement opens with verses 1-3, and after a stirring piano interlude and key change it concludes with verse 7 as the piano maintains the familiar 6/8 melody while the chorus reverently concludes with a variation on the message of Matthew 25:40.

LYRICS
Once upon a time they say a child was born in a stable
Far away across the sea, laid in a poor-manā€™s cradle

Could they know that through the years this story would be spoken
Till it reached our distant shore, a web of love unbroken

Now each year at Christmas time
We sing out, sing out in wonder
How this story still unfolds
The precious gift of a child

Shepherds kings and angels knew that ā€˜Peace on Earthā€™ was the message
Sent with love for all to know, throughout the Earth and the ages

MASTERS IN THIS HALL
SATB or Acappella

An old French carol, Marche pour les Matelots by Marin Marais (1706), this tune is a favorite at Christmas and is popular with carolers. The words were written by Willia Morris (1860)

In a 16th century style, Masters in This Hall refers back to a simpler society when the poor, bringing news of Christ's birth to the Masters in this Hall was a warning to the proud.

This song explains raising up the poor and casting down the proud is also contained in the song of the Virgin Mary as in Luke 1:51. This carol describes a poor man who wished to draw his master's attention to the birth of Christ by telling how he had met shepherds travelling to Bethlehem. He joined them and saw the Christ child in his Mother Mary's arms. The chorus reveals how the birth of Christ has raised up the poor and cast down the proud.

SATB, but may be sung acappella

Chorus, men's section, ladies section, then all repeat on the chorus
