SATB chorus & piano - Grade 2 - Digital Download

SKU: IZ.VMW185

Composed by Richard Sorce. Score. 6 pages. Imagine Music - Digital #VMW185. Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.VMW185).

6.75 x 10.5 in inches.

The text for this piece appeared in a small booklet of reflections by several writers, and while perusing several of these reflections I came upon, My Strength Is My Lord by Albert Norman Theel. That was 27 years ago. I contacted Mr. Theel asking for permission to set his text to music and he agreed. After the music was written, it sat in my collection of original manuscripts until Imagine Music Publishing agreed to publish it. I believe performers will find Mr. Theel's words inspirational.

This work is an SATB setting with piano accompaniment. I consciously kept it brief. Nothing to detract from the lyrics. Perform it with expression and the message will unfold.

SKU: BJ.1481

Composed by HÃ¥kan Svensson. Secular. 12 pages. Bo Ejeby Forlag - Digital #1481. Published by Bo Ejeby Forlag - Digital (BJ.1481).

8.27 x 11.7 inches.

In 'The peace of wild things', the American poet Wendell Berry (born 1934) deals with existential anxiety. Though published in 1968, the message is just as urgent today. Our news feeds shower us with reports about war, climate and environmental catastrophes, and about authoritarian regimes advancing their positions. What will become of us? What kind of world are we passing on to our children?
This poem gives me a ray of hope in the midst of despair, offering a moment’s rest while my own – and all mankind’s – smallness is revealed. It also allows me to sense the presence of something greater.
My musical interpretation is based on these reflections. The conflict between anxiety and peace, dissonance and consonance, open textures versus clusters. The piece and its phrases are well-suited to interpretation, and to being performed with a great deal of freedom. – Håkan Svensson.

Composed by Curtis Hanson. Sacred,World. Octavo. 12 pages. Curtis Hanson #2032679. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719511).

September 11, 2001 has had a profound affect on many people, not the least of which is the composer of this work. Written the month following the tragic events of 9/11, it is a reflection of the chaotic times in which we live. Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace) is a prayer for peace to the loving God who is the God (or Allah, or Yahweh) of all people, that out of our current discord peace and harmony may come to all humanity. The work is in three sections (ABA) with a coda. The only text in the first three sections is a wailing Oh intoned by the choir. Throughout these sections the melody wanders in search of a harmonious resting point. In the B section the choir and strings part ways and resonate increased dissonance. The second A section exactly duplicates the first. The work concludes in the coda with the phrase Dona nobis pacem and an ever-increasing sense of harmonious repose. The listener may hear occasional reflections of Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings or Pavane for a Dead Princess by Maurice Ravel. Dona Nobis Pacem was premiered in May 2003 by the combined choirs of the John Duss Music Conservatory, Duluth MN, and Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Superior WI, under the direction of the composer. It is purely coincidental that there are 191 measures in the work......the numbers in the date of 9/11.

Paradise: In A Dream is a song cycle featuring four pieces, each with their own unique character, set to poems by Christina Rossetti. These four pieces are a commentary on life, death, and the curiosity we feel about what may come after death. The first two movements, Let Me Go and Echo are solemn and plaintive reflections about how one may react to the death of a loved one. The third movement, Paradise: In A Dream, evokes euphoria and glory, foreseeing a blissful and eternal afterlife, followed by the peaceful acceptance of mortality in Fluttered Wings, the final movement of the cycle.

Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis. Composed by Julian Anderson. This edition: choral score. Choral Music of Our Time. Downloadable, Choral score. Duration 9 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q54420. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q54420).

English.

Although I had already set separate Latin versions of both the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis, this is the first time I’ve made a setting in English of both texts for use at Evensong. I have often attended Evensong in the Cambridge college chapels: it’s a service whose meanings and spirituality are quite different from any other, and it has its own special atmosphere. Evensong’s coupling of Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis texts is fascinating: the exuberant celebration of the former contrasts so marvellously with the intimate reflections of the latter. In my Evening Canticles I have tried to make the most of that contrast. The Magnificat is forceful, replete with sprung rhythms, polymeter, and bright harmonies showing off the brilliance of the choir. Some use is made (especially near the opening) of free rhythms in which every singer performs a passage at their own speed, creating a spray of sound. The Nunc Dimittis, on the other hand, is predominantly clear and transparent, even austere, allowing the singers to shape melodic lines with expression and lyricism, as befits the text. I was enormously excited to be invited to compose my Evening Canticles for Andrew Nethsingha and the Choir of St John’s College, Cambridge. I want to thank all the performers for giving the work such a splendid launch, and for the magnificent recording on this CD. The work is dedicated to Andrew Nethsingha. JA 2019.

SKU: MQ.8490-E

Composed by Joseph Gregorio. Advent. 16 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8490-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8490-E).

English. Isaiah 61.

A triptych of pieces for harp or piano and SATB chorus divisi, using texts by poet Christine Schenk. Here her version of the O Antiphons provides a means of contemporary reflection on those ancient texts. The three short movements are untitled but the texts begin 1. O Wisdom, 2. I wait with quickened hope for crooked paths to straighten, and 3. You who make wastelands bloom. The music is masterful, at times introspective and gentle, at times sweeping and dramatic. A jewel for an accomplished ensemble. Duration: 9:00

By Queen. By Brian May, Freddie Mercury, John Deacon, and Roger Taylor. Arranged by Timothy Allen. Pop,Rock. 10 pages. Timothy Allen Music Ltd #1071460. Published by Timothy Allen Music Ltd (A0.1494901).

This is one of the last songs that Freddie Mercury recorded before he died, and he wrote it whilst looking out at Lake Geneva, where Queen had a recording studio. He knew he didn't have long left, but his reflections in this song aren't melancholy - he writes of the things he can see out of his window, the beauty of the world, the fun that kids are having outside, and the simple joys of winter.
The arrangement has some tricky rhythms, as it aims to stay pretty close to what Freddie sang. Aim for a conversational feel, with some freedom in the delivery, and it will become easier than mathematically working out all the cross-rhythms. Enjoy the big fall-offs - they're really fun!
