A setting for unaccompanied mixed choir (SATB) of the poem FIRE AND ICE by Robert Frost (1874 - 1963).  Duration ca. 3'15.Published in December 1920 in Harper's Magazine and again in 1923 in his Pulitzer Prize−winning book New Hampshire, Fire and Ice is one of Robert Frost's most popular poems.  Some have asserted that the poem is a compression of Dante's Inferno. In an anecdote he recounted in 1960, prominent astronomer Harlow Shapley claimed to have inspired Fire and Ice in an encounter with Frost a year before the poem was published. Frost asked Shapley how the world will end, and Shapley responded that either the sun will explode and incinerate the Earth, or the Earth will somehow escape this fate only to end up slowly freezing in deep space. It takes the form of a 7-verse Epiphany carol, with introduction and coda, setting a poem by Laurie Twinam. Verse 1 gives the option for a single solo voice. Otherwise vocal lines, for SATB choir, retain the folk tune contour throughout, with fairly simple harmonies and a canon. Around this, the piano accompaniment weaves a set of characterful variations, as a commentary on each differing verse, which is always linked by a 2-bar 'turnaround'. The work explores aspects of both major and minor tonality, as well as modality (with the characteristic flattened seventh), thus working within and around the given folk idiom. This piece is appropriate for virtually any standard and size of SATB choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs. The accompaniment can be on piano, or for organ if slightly adapted by the player. The solo/unison and 2-part SA versions of this piece, as well as the solo piano version (Variations on 'Barbara Allen') by the same composer, are also available via Sheet Music Plus. The piece builds in textural complexity and density throughout, as an attempt to depict the increasing sense of abundant love, referred to in the text. The main melodic material is deliberately simple and rather folk/chant-like. This essentially appears as a single line in the first verse, becoming a two-part canon (by one bar) in the second verse, and finally a four-part canon (by half a bar) in the third verse. The imitative coda leads to ultimate resolution on an F major chord at the end. The work is highly accessible, and is designed for performance by good SATB choirs, able to effectively sustain such unaccompanied singing. There are several texts to this song; all refer, more or less, to an uprising of Scottish dissidents against the English is 1745-46. After their defeat, they fled to the Island of Skye. The text used here by the poet Robert Louis Stevenson. UPC: 600313134685.Love, thricewise was the winner of the 2009 Pacific Chorale Young Composers Competition. It was premiered in February 2010 under the baton of Robert Istad by the John Alexander Singers. The first movement, Liquor and lacquer, sets Witter Bynner's Opus 6 and depicts infatuation through flighty changes of meter and sudden shifts of mode. The second, entitled An amethyst remembrance and based on a poem by Emily Dickinson, is built around a false cadence on the words 'T will keep. It is regretful, slowly building to an anguished climax and wistfully fading away. Finally, Kinsfolk takes Sidney Lanier's A Song of Love as its text. It is both a lighthearted reflection on the paradoxical and complementary relationship between love and pain, and a pining for love. The first two stanzas of Kinsfolk pit the tenors and basses, who deliver the first stanza’s melody, against the sopranos and altos, who answer in the second stanza with the same melody in a key a tritone away from that of the first. The third stanza is a fugato on the same melody, culminating in a fervid fortissimo. Duration approx. 6:30.
