SKU: MQ.1.3603-E

Composed by Melissa Dunphy. 11 pages. Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital #1.3603-E. Published by Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital (MQ.1.3603-E).

English.

Commissioned by the Donald Sinclair Sutherland Endowment for the Bradley Hills Presbyterian Chancel Choir, Matthew Robertson, Conductor, and was premiered on March 24, 2019 at Bradley Hills Presbyterian Church, Maryland. The text is adapted from a chapter of the 1923 prose poetry book titled The Prophet by Lebanese-American author Kahlil Gibran, who was influenced by Christianity, Islam, and Sufism. It addresses a path out of despair and meaninglessness through working with love, a message that has as much relevance to today’s world as that of a century ago. -Melissa Dunphy.

All great myths take place in legendary places - Mount Olympus, Atlantis, Camelot, Asgard and Cimmeria - the home of the great fictional hero Conan the Barbarian. The text used in this piece comes from a short poem by Robert E. Howard which he wrote while living in Boerne, Texas inspired by the terrain of the hill country. Howard uses incredibly descriptive text to paint the picture of the land of Cimmeria such as sombre hills, gaunt land and woodlands brooding. The verse then switches to the perspective of the narrator who struggles to recall what name was used for him when he existed in this ancient land. In setting this text I aimed to use a dense, sombre harmonic texture to illustrate this hazy memory of a distance place. When the voice of narrator is heard the music switches into a rough, barbaric chant and then back to the dark texture. The use of bassoon and synthesizer layered under the chorus should lend an other-wordly sound to the piece.

The Year's At The Spring (Senior) - PIANO BACKING

The year's at the spring
And day's at the morn;
Morning's at seven;
The hillside's dew-pearled;
The lark's on the wing;
The snail's on the thorn:
God's in His heaven—
All's right with the world!

Pippa is a happy and innocent young woman, out walking in the countryside one day, going from one village to the next; singing a happy little song as she goes. In her naivety and innocence, she sees kindness and virtue in all the people she passes along the way. But - unbeknown to her - there are sinister goings-on in the lives of all the characters she passes. However, on hearing her happy little tune - although Pippa is unaware of it - her song has a positive effect on all those people she passes, influencing them to change their ways and start acting for the good. A story about the power of song and positivity - and how that can affect others without us even realising it. This is Pippa’s song as she passes by.

with rehearsal piano.

Texts by Robert Louis Stevenson (1850-1894)

A setting of two separate texts appearing on Stevenson's memorial in St. Giles Cathedral. The first part is flowing, irregular, folk-like; the second a solemn but joyful hymn.  This could be either a concert piece or used in a ceremony of remembrance.

2019

Give us grace and strength to forbear and to persevere.
Give us courage and gaiety, and the quiet mind.
Spare to us our friends, soften to us our enemies.
Bless us, if it may be, in all our innocent endeavours.
If it may not, give us the strength to encounter that which is to come,
that we may be brave in peril, constant in tribulation, temperate in wrath,
and in all changes of fortune,
and down to the gates of death,
loyal and loving to one another.

Under the wide and starry sky,
Dig the grave and let me lie.
Glad did I live and gladly die,
And I laid me down with a will.
This be the verse you grave for me:
Here he lies where he longed to be;
Home is the sailor, home from sea,
And the hunter home from the hill.

Robert Louis Stevenson, Scotland, prayer, thanksgiving, memorial, funeral, remembrance, folk, anthem.
