Stewart (A0.1211960). “What If I Seek for Love� (1601), by English composer Robert Jones (c.1577-1617), who was one of the most prolific composers and lutenists of his day.  Of the more popular musical forms of English Renaissance (the late 15th century to the early 1600’s) was the lute song: a piece for single voice accompanied by the lute.  Most lute songs are about love and tended to be a rather melancholy affair with disdainful ladies refusing to acknowledge the ardent advances of hopeful lovers – as is “What If I Seek for Love�.  This 2023 setting is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble and keyboard accompaniment.  It can be performed either a cappella or with accompaniment, the SATB voicings will stand alone  The simple melody and poetry of Jones is retained and embellished with the piano accompaniment.  This is an excellent piece for young singers, introducing them to style, form and technique.  Performance time: 1:30+-.

One Small Child was written in 2008 by Krista Bladel, a high school student in Indiana. It was the winning entry in a contest for young poets that was sponsored by the South Bend Chamber Singers. The final selection was made by the composer Robert A. Harris (b. 1938), who was very taken by its poignant propensity of hope for the world. Scored for SATB divisi and soprano soloist, this is a beautiful and challenging setting.

Will Ye Go to the Indies:  As a young man Scotland’s great poet, Robert Burns, fell in love with a girl he called Highland Mary, and persuaded her to emigrate with him to the West Indies. In the text of this song we hear the poem he wrote about those huge decisions. Tragically, Mary died before they could start their life together. Many years later, in 1792, Burns set the poem to an old Scottish folk song. To his publisher he explained: You must know, that all my earlier love-songs were the breathings of ardent Passion; and tho’ it might have been easy in aftertimes to have given them a polish, yet that polish would have defaced the legend of my heart.

Ranges are not extreme and harmonies are straight-forward. Voices are fully supported by the accompaniment. The only challenge occurs in the second verse as the treble voices continue with the Banks and Braes melody, but the bass and tenor juxtapose the melody of another well-known Scottish tune, Loch Lomond. Alternate contemporary words for the original Scottish dialect are provided.

Over several years, they found a way to communicate with the extra-terrestrial and developed a mutual understanding. This part contains various majestically glorious melodies, symbolising the visions of humanity. They took a giant leap of faith for this nearly impossible mission to perceive what humankind can never envision. Grandioso signifies the lavish natural architectures that filled the galaxies and the monumental bonding between humans and aliens. As the friendship blossomed, they further explored the world that has been an enigma for centuries. Before the piece ends, the main theme is delivered again.
