SKU: MQ.1.3613-E

Composed by Kyle Pederson. Graduation. Instrument part. 10 pages. Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital #1.3613-E. Published by Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital (MQ.1.3613-E).

UPC: 600313136139. English.

Selected as a ï¬nalist in the 2019 Ithaca College Choral Festival and premiered there as part of the festival. This piece received its Midwest premiere at the ACDA North/North Central regional conference in 2020, performed by Roosevelt High School, directed by Robyn Starks Holcomb. The text of the piece is addressed to anyone facing struggles—and it presents an honest afï¬rmation that those struggles are real. Rather than deny the existence of problems or pain, the listener is encouraged to “lean into†the hardship, to name it—and to thereby reduce its power. Textually and musically, the listener is presented with the metaphor of a tree—being whipped by the wind—but built to bend in that wind and ultimately withstand the pressure-ï¬lled gales. The power of community is also afï¬rmed—as the listener is encouraged to walk alongside—to bend along with—their neighbor.

LYRICS:
Still, Still, Still.
One can hear the falling snow.
For all is hushed, the world is sleeping,
Holy Star its vigil keeping.
Still, still, still.
One can hear the falling snow.

Sleep, sleep, sleep.
'Tis the eve of our Savior's birth.
The night is peaceful all around you,
close your eyes, let sleep surround you.
Sleep, sleep, sleep.
'Tis the eve of our Savior's birth.

Dream, dream, dream
of the joyous day to come.
While guardian angels without number,
watch you as you sweetly slumber.
Dream, dream, dream
of the joyous day to come.

Composed by James W. Knox. Contemporary,Folk. Octavo. 110 pages. Knox Music #4580161. Published by Knox Music (A0.942861).

Jack and his Fortune is a major choral worked based on Flora Annie Steel's version of How Jack went out to seek his fortune.  The original Irish folktale, Jack and his Comrades dates back to 1866. Throughout many years this story has taken on other similar stories like the well known Town Musicians of Bremen by Brothers Grimm.
Each movement (six total) takes you on a grand journey of a boy named Jack who is seeking fortune.  Not long after, several traveling companions (cat, dog, goat, bull and rooster) follow him in hopes of finding fortune as well.

Traveling all day, the darkness began to settle for the night and they are in need of a place to stay. Finding a house, Jack discovers robbers counting their stolen gold.  He comes up with a plan and scares the robbers away.  Jack was smart and he knew that one of the robbers would be back in the middle of the night to take back the gold.  He places each animal in different areas of the house to scare the robber away.  What happens next is a frenzy of mishaps  that eventually scare the robber away for good!

Program Notes: The fact that the text for this work even exists is a miracle.
It was written by Abraham (Abramek) Koplowicz, a Jewish boy who was exterminated by the Nazis during the Holocaust.
Abramek was born in 1930 in Lodz, Poland, and died 1944 in that country's infamous concentration camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau.
He wrote this poem during the time that his family was trapped in the Lodz ghetto.
This poem was not found until 1983 when Eliezer (Lolek) Grynfeld, the poet's half-brother, discovered it among their late father's belongings.
Choristers who sing this work will be transported on a magical flight around the world through time and space along with their audiences.

A Dream (Marzenie)
When I am twenty years of age,
I will burst forth from this cage
And begin to see our splendid Earth
For the first time since my birth!
In my motorized bird I’ll soar so high
Above the world, up in the sky,
Over rivers and the seas,
With such stupefying ease,
With my brother wind and sister cloud, I’ll
Marvel at the Euphrates and the Nile;
The goddess Isis ruled the land that links
The Pyramids and the massive Sphynx.
I will glide above Niagara Falls,
And sunbathe where the Sahara calls;
If I want to escape the scorching heat,
I will fly up north to an Arctic retreat.
I will top the cloudy peaks of Tibetan fame
And survey the fabled land whence the Magi came.
From the Island of Kangaroos
I’ll take my time and cruise
To the ruins of Pompeii
At the edge of Naples Bay,
I’ll continue to the Holy Land, then seek
The home of Homer, the celebrated Greek.
More and more astonished will I grow
At the beauty of the Earth below.
In all my travelling I’ll be twinned
With my siblings, cloud and wind.

Composed by Christian Humcke. A Cappella,Contemporary. Octavo. 11 pages. Christian Humcke #6404851. Published by Christian Humcke (A0.1023766).

Instrumentation: SATB a cappella choir (with divisi)
Duration: 6'
Completed: January 2017

I wrote the poem The Landowner a few years ago in a poetry class at my undergraduate alma mater, Bucknell University. When I heard that there was an opportunity to write for a student formed choir at Peabody, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to set one of my previously written poems to music. I looked back at poems which I had written, and came across The Landowner. It continues to intrigue me to this day since I am still uncertain as to what it is about. This enigmatic, earthy, and hauntingly repetitive poem poses more questions than it does provide answers. This is something which fascinates me, and which I sought to depict in the music.

The Landowner:

The landowner sends out his three servants.
Each go to work in separate fields;
To rake the leaves,
to harvest the crops,
to pluck the fruits from the tree.

Working endlessly,
They turn their heads from each other.
They refuse to help,
they refuse to talk.
Good work is done,
but for what purpose?

The landowner plucks fresh leaves
from a papaya tree.
Although he is blind,
he still sees the sun.
The mooing of cows and
crowing of roosters ceases.

He stands in the shade,
waiting for his servants.
They offer him papaya,
He shakes his head
