Skye Boat Song is one of my favoryte folk songs from the British Isles. Skye refers to the Island of Skye, a large island off the northwest coast os Scotland. There are several texts to this song; all refer, more or less, to an uprising of Scottish dissidents against the English is 1745-46. After their defeat, they fled to the Island of Skye. The text used here by the poet Robert Louis Stevenson. Scholars attribute the first half of the melody to an old se chantey and suspect thea the second half may have benn written by Annie MacLeod.

The Solemn Mass CS524 for chorus of mixed voices, soloist voices and organ, was composed in Rome by Santino Cara at the end of 1999, and published in 2001. This Mass retraces the six classical canons Latin of the Roman Missal: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus-Benedictus and Agnus Dei. It is difficult to find Christmas music that focuses on the role of Joseph, Christ’s foster father. That is one of the reasons I chose to set this text, it is a part of the story that is often left out. The other reason is that this it contains one of the first New Testament prophecies concerning Christ, the revelation that Jesus will save his people from their sins. Written for the Choir of Holy Redeemer, Chelsea, this Salve Regina makes the most of the 8-part vocal texture with rich harmonies and different voice groupings. The fluid lines are reminiscent of Gregorian chant while the close canonical writing builds into rolling cluster chords. It ends with a beautiful harmonic resolution in the final cadence (similar to the ending of the Missa Et Incarnatus Est).

This is a tuneful and attractive setting which looks at the town of Bethlehem through the eyes of travelers who are going to see the child Jesus. The main melody is set is 8/8 time which easily divides into groups of three, two and three. It’s scored for SATB choir with keyboard accompaniment and would be ideal of high school, college or community choirs. There are opportunities for optional solos in the piece and the piano part is of medium difficulty. It would be ideal for a nativity play or part of a Christmas service or Christmas concert. The vocal ranges are as follows: Soprano C4 - G5; Alto: A3 - D5; Tenor: C3 - F4 and Bass F2 - F3. The work is also available scored for SAT and SSA choirs.  (Duration: 04:09)
