SKU: A0.734646

Composed by Joseph Hasper. A Cappella,Christmas,Contemporary. Octavo. 10 pages. Joseph Hasper #442961. Published by Joseph Hasper (A0.734646).

The text for The Kings They Came is from the poem Christmas Carol by Sara Teasdale. Teasdale (1884–1933) published this poem in 1911 and won the Columbia Poetry Prize (which was later known as the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry) in 1918. A 1926 New York Times Book Review described her poetry as musical and lyric, stating MissTeasdale is first, last, and always a singer. It is in this spirit of joyous and unstudied song (as a New York Times Book Review described Teasdale’s poetry in 1915) that The Kings They Came should be sung. The music is unpretentious, tuneful, and ever joyful.

English.

Stephen Chatman’s setting of Sara Teasdale’s whimsical poem pertaining to a brown-thrush, April, love and kisses, emulates the meaning, strict rhythm, rhyme and strophic structure of the text. The soft rolled chords of the harp-like piano accompaniment highlight the lilting 6/8-meter, folk-like melody, and consistent homophonic choral texture. The repetitive lines, “Love me, love me, love me!”, and “kiss me, kiss me, kiss me!”, inspire the musical refrains. One of a set of six of Teasdale's love songs. Duration: 1:45.

SKU: A0.892250

Composed by Stephen Jackson. 20th Century,Contemporary,Standards. Octavo. 7 pages. Stephen Jackson #3575035. Published by Stephen Jackson (A0.892250).

This setting of Sara Teasdale's iconic poem (published in 1918) is perfect for groups from upper level high school mixed choirs to a professional ensembles. Generous voice leading, a thought provoking text, dynamic and timbral contrasts, rich harmonies and a luscious piano part make this a welcome addition to any concert program.  Metric changes, gentle syncopations and shifting harmonies make this an excellent teaching piece as well.  Duration - 3 minutes.

An interesting cross-curriculum opportunity exists in studying the Ray Bradbury short story by the same title, published in 1951. The plot is an excellent study of irony and contrasts markedly with the more direct intentions of Teasdale's poem.

Stephen Jackson's body of works includes pieces for solo voice, choral ensembles, solo piano, chamber music, a children's opera, and  several electro-acoustic suites for digital soundscape and solo instrument. Born in New Orleans, Jackson currently resides in El Paso, TX where the stunning desert landscapes and endless expanse of sky inform a love of broadly composed works for both sacred and secular performance.  .

The middle and final sections, imbued with sad words such as “let me ease my heart,” “with broken wing” and “Forget that I am speaking,” evolve beautifully within contrasting tonal regions, supported by undulating keyboard arpeggios.
