It's all about a pure heart which can sing by day and by night.In the first verse I've kept the traditional Welsh harmonies; then in verses 2 and 3 the harmonisation is my own. In verse 2 ATB sing the melody in unison while the sopranos sing a lovely descant line. In verse 3 the tenors have the melody with full SATB harmonies. Every line is singable.Welsh pronunciation is difficult (now there's an understatement) so underneath every line I've added the pronunciation. There are two specifically Welsh sounds: LL which is pronounced HL, and CH which is said in the back of the throat, as in the Scottish Loch.

With the more gentle lyrics by R. L. Stevenson it is arranged here for a cappella SATB choir.

This hymn first appeared in the Church of Scotland magazine, Life and Work, in 1883. From thence it passed into the Scottish Hymnal 1884; and there set to special music by Dr. A. L. Peace. How Sweet Is the Torment, is a 2022 setting of Monteverdi’s Baroque aria Sì dolce è’l tormento which was published in 1624.  Its strophic composition made it immediately ‘catchy’ and its original lyrics by Carlo Milanuzzi, conveys a very familiar topic: the ‘sweet torment of a broken heart’. This song carries the subtitle: Recitar cantando, that new style of singing that imitates the inflections of the spoken text.  Text (and elocution) is/are important.  The text has been updated and put in the vernacular (English) of/by the arranger. This aria is arranged for a 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment.  Performance time: 4:35+-
