Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.817434 Composed by Aaron Lee. 20th Century,A Cappella,Classical,Contemporary. Octavo. 8 pages. J. Aaron Lee #423391. Published by J. Aaron Lee (A0.817434). With a text taken from Emily Brontë's poem, The Night is Darkening Round Me, this setting represents an individual who is feeling increasingly trapped and helpless in their situation, and could even depict feelings of depression. Even the key changes in the work bring the listener through a full cycle and sets them up to repeat this spiral forever. Unlike some of my other works, this work is not intended to be uplifting, but is instead an ernest acknowledgement of the pain some people endure. This work is written for SATB choir (a cappella) and is approximately 3 minutes in duration. The choral parts are largely diatonic and should be accessible to most audiences/ensembles. Choral Choir,Choral,SATB Chorus - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1408592 Composed by Cam Moll. A Cappella,Chamber. 8 pages. Cam Moll #991189. Published by Cam Moll (A0.1408592). This piece is a setting of the poem of the same name by Emily Dickinson for SATB choir unaccompanied. I chose this text because I was immediately drawn to its rich language and subtle elegance. I think that the poem is a beautiful representation of the complex nature of grief, and the effect that it has on the human experience. All of us have experienced the grief that comes with loss, and each of us deals with grief in our own ways. The vocal parts interact with each other in a variety of interesting ways and textures, in order to communicate this complex notion of grief. Featuring two soloists towards the end, the piece aims to allow the audience to reflect on the concept of grief, and is designed to be accessible for choral ensembles of varying experience levels.A preview of the score with audio can be found here. Learning tracks also available for purchase.

Choral Choir,Choral (SATB) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1308012 By Richard deCosta. By Richard deCosta. Arranged by Richard deCosta. A Cappella,Chamber,Classical,Opera,Romantic Period. 4 pages. Richard deCosta #897289. Published by Richard deCosta (A0.1308012). Words by Emily DickinsonMusic by Richard deCostaBecause I could not stop for Death –He kindly stopped for me –The Carriage held but just Ourselves –And Immortality. We slowly drove – He knew no hasteAnd I had put awayMy labor and my leisure too,For His Civility –We passed the School, where Children stroveAt Recess – in the Ring –We passed the Fields of Gazing Grain –We passed the Setting Sun –Or rather – He passed Us –The Dews drew quivering and Chill –For only Gossamer, my Gown –My Tippet – only Tulle –We paused before a House that seemedA Swelling of the Ground –The Roof was scarcely visible –The Cornice – in the Ground –Since then – 'tis Centuries – and yetFeels shorter than the DayI first surmised the Horses' HeadsWere toward Eternity –-=-In the reclusive chambers of Emily Dickinson's 19th-century Massachusetts home, the haunting poem, 'Because I Could Not Stop for Death,' was conceived. Living much of her life in isolation, Dickinson's thoughts often ventured into the shadowlands of existence. This poem, published posthumously in 1890, offers a chilling reflection of her contemplation. The Grim Reaper, a timeless symbol, is portrayed as a carriage driver, guiding the reader through a somber journey that mirrors the ephemeral nature of life. Passing scenes of childhood innocence, maturity's labor, and the twilight of existence, it culminates in the cold embrace of the grave. Her words, etched in a gothic darkness, resonate with the uncertainties and fears of her time, transcending to speak to the eternal human condition.
