Published by Ron James Anderson (A0.965554). Evening Prayer is somewhat in the style of a chorale prelude, with its flowing accompaniment and simple melody. The form divides neatly into two distinct sections-the first in F major, and the second in Bb major. The F major section represents our earthly life. Even though God’s peace is present throughout (the flowing accompaniment), the words speak of the strife and hardship of our time on Earth. While we are here on Earth, we tend to believe that this life is all there is (that F major will continue to the end). But at the point in the music where the text says and our work is done, ending on a D major chord, we find ourselves in a strange place between life and the afterlife; the moment of death itself. After this comes an a cappella section in Bb major, which represents our life in Heaven. The F major life merely served as a dominant preparation for the Bb major afterlife! (Actually, I think we should call eternity life, and our earthly life pre-life). The piece ends with the same flowing passages found in the beginning of the piece, this time in Bb major.

Love Alone Shall Guide Us is an a cappella, SATB piece with no divisi. The words were written in 1846 and are particularly interesting and poignant because they were written TO Edgar Allan Poe by his wife Virginia Clemm Poe (1822-1847). He never wrote a poem specifically for her, but she wrote this acrostic poem for him shortly before the end of her short and tragic life. Here are the lyrics: Ever with thee I wish to roam — Dearest my life is thine. Give me a cottage for my home And a rich old cypress vine, Removed from the world with its sin and care And the tattling of many tongues. Love alone shall guide us when we are there — Love shall heal my weakened lungs; And Oh, the tranquil hours we’ll spend, Never wishing that others may see! Perfect ease we’ll enjoy, without thinking to lend Ourselves to the world and its glee — Ever peaceful and blissful we’ll be. Virginia Poe mentions her illness when it states Love shall heal my weakened lungs because it was tuberculosis that took her life less than a year after writing these words. For modern performers, I particularly like the line Never wishing other may see; in this social media era, this is really a foreign concept!

It has aspects of imitation, with a lot of independence in the parts. The vocal parts represent the voice of Jesus, the voices of those who crucified him, a narrator, and also briefly the voice of Peter, Jesus' disciple. The bass primarily sings the role of the people who called for his death, but as the piece continues others join in this role. I wrote some of the lyrics and also pulled some verses in from the Bible. I think this would be a great piece for Holy Week, perhaps on Good Friday or Maundy Thursday. the piece captures some of the intense emotions involved in the crucifixion and would make a great addition to Lenten music in the church. Lyrics:Why did you leave me?Why did you run?I absolved you of your sin. Jesus Christ must die for what he's done. I absolved you of your sin,I saved you from yourselves,I just wanted to lead you,Closer to God. Death! I wanted to give you new life. Elder Holland states: My beloved brothers and sisters, I am not certain just what our experience will be on Judgment Day, but I will be very surprised if, at some point in that conversation, God does not ask us exactly what Christ asked Peter: 'Did you love me?' I think He will want to know if in our very mortal, very inadequate, and sometimes childish grasp of things, did we at least understand one commandment, the first and greatest commandment of them all—'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind' (Luke 10:27; see also Matthew 22:37–38). And if at such a moment we can stammer out, 'Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee,' then He may remind us that the crowning characteristic of love is always loyalty. Do You Hear How Many You Are? for SATB choir was written in April and May of 2010. The origins of this piece and text come from a very interesting experience I had in December of 2009. I have been learning a lot in the past few years about the state of our world and the many huge problems and crises we are faced with in the near future, and this discovery has been so daunting and overwhelming to me. So much change needs to happen in order for the near and long-term future of our world to be just and stable that I have felt a lot of guilt over my choice of profession. Why have I chosen to be a composer and musician when I could make more of an impact on solving these problems if I were a scientist or policy maker etc.? I have been struggling to find a solution to this dilemma for a while now and I just happened to be thinking about it, while filled with lots of stress and worries, one night as I was falling asleep in December of 2009. At the moment when I was in that state halfway between sleep and consciousness, I suddenly heard the line Do you hear how many you are? in my head, yet I felt as though I didn't come up with the line but that it was said TO me. I was instantly comforted, as if a load fell off my shoulders, and then I began to hear it being sung, which I knew was the beginning of a choral piece. I woke up, wrote down the music I was hearing (about the first six measures of the work) and then wrote down this entire poem. I truly feel that this message came to me for a reason, and that I need to share it through the music I create. Here the lyrics tells a love in a hard moment of life and every element is placed in a delicate balance where any change can be disruptive.Even trying to modify the music style would require an artist of the same weight, and I am not.So I tried to stay close to the original, using the most recognizable pattern of the song (the notes in sixteenth).Since we know that the vocal versions have to be shorter than the played ones (ears get bored before) and the original song if 4 minutes long, I cut the entire verse Ti porterò.... For those who want to play also the missing part, it’s easy: from bar 41 go back to bar 5, sing up to bar 18 (with the lyrics changed for the lead, Ti porterò..., other voices do not change) and then go ahead to bar 42 and from there to the end.
