SATB choir, organ, narrator

SKU: LO.65-1966S

Reflections on the Eve of Christmas. Composed by Gilbert M. Martin. Choral, cantatas. Advent, Christmas, Sacred. Choral score. Sacred Music Press #65/1966S. Published by Sacred Music Press (LO.65-1966S).

UPC: 000308098303.

The birth of the Holy Child is gently recalled in this serene and contemplative mini-cantata. This composer's familiar hallmarks of colorful organ sounds and expressive choral writing shine throughout this luminous work. An original, flowing setting of Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus leads off the Bethlehem journey, followed by the well-known Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming. The very first awe-filled visitors are in attendance with While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks, and all adore the new-born King with a sumptuous choral arrangement of Away in a Manger, weaving both familiar melodies together in simple tranquility. A sensitive setting of the Christina Rossetti poem, Love Came Down at Christmas brings the entire work together, quietly heralding Jesus' peaceful arrival on earth. The narrator comments throughout with the familiar Christmas story from St. Luke. You will find this work to be suitable for the Sundays before Christmas, on Christmas Day, and especially, on Christmas Eve.

Composed by Paul D. Weber. Reformation. Score. 20 pages. MorningStar Music Publishers - Digital Sheet Music #60-8005-E. Published by MorningStar Music Publishers - Digital Sheet Music (MQ.60-8005-E).

Commissioned for the 2001 Reformation Festival in Catawba County, North Carolina, this expanded setting on the tune Ein feste Burg was first performed in remembrance of 9/11 by adult and children's choirs, brass, and percussion (Timpani and Gong). Using Luther's own vigorous rhythms and a grand choral refrain from Psalm 46, this setting engages the singers and assembly in an exciting and dramatic experience. Verse 3 includes the choirs echoing each other in playful fashion while the accompaniment introduces Luther's Christmas hymn, From Heaven Above, all to portray God's victory over evil with one little Word, Jesus Christ. This stunning work can be performed with organ alone (Organ plays from Choral score) or with organ and brass (Organ plays from Full Score or Organ Part included in Instrumental Parts packet). When performed with organ and brass Organist plays from Full Score or Organ Part included in Instrumental Parts packet.

Composed by Traditional French. Arranged by Garrett Breeze. A Cappella,Christmas. Octavo. 9 pages. Lagom Music #6664657. Published by Lagom Music (A0.723486).

This arrangement of Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella draws its character from the story of the text, as well as the melody's historical roots as a drinking/dance song. Generally upbeat and uptempo, the mood of the music tracks closely to the story of Jeanette and Isabella, two young farmhands who have discovered the baby Jesus and rush to inform the whole town and bring them to the manger. Scored for evenly divided SSAATTBB a cappella voices, this powerful setting is a challenging but accessible concert number for more advanced choirs.

Bring a torch! Jeanette, Isabella. Bring a torch, come quickly and run! Christ is born, tell the folk of the village. Mary has laid Him in a manger. Ah! Ah! Beautiful is the mother. Ah! Ah! Virtuous is the father. Ah! Ah! Wonderful is The Child.

At the stable who now comes knocking? Who comes knocking upon the door? Grant us entrance, 'tis gifts we come bearing. All of our finest we shall give Him. Toc! Toc! Grant us entrance, gifts we bring. Toc! Toc! Celebrate now the Son!

It is wrong when the baby is sleeping, it is wrong to speak so loud. Silence now as you gather around, lest your noise should waken Jesus. Hush! Hush! See how The Baby slumbers. Hush! Hush! See how He smiles in dreams!

Hasten now, good folk of the village, hasten now, the Christ Child to see. You will find Him asleep in a manger, look at Him there, His cheeks are rosy! Haste! Haste! Follow Jeanette and run! Haste! Haste! Come, Isabella, come! Haste! Haste! Bring a torch and run!

Composed by Todd Marchand. Christian,Sacred,Traditional. 16 pages. Con Spirito Music #933976. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1349231).

Three Evening Canticles were written as part of a setting of choral evensong for Church of the Holy Apostles - Anglican, Fort Worth, Texas. Metrical, mostly homophonic, and conservative in technical challenges and ranges, these canticles are accessible for small choirs and those of moderate ability, yet musically satisfying for large and accomplished groups.
Ā
Phos Hilaron (ā€œO Gladsome Lightā€) is one of the earliest known Christian hymns (ca. 3rd-4th century) recorded outside of the Bible. Intended to be sung at the kindling of lights in the evening, it is sometimes known as the ā€œlamp-lighting hymnā€ and has been adopted by some Anglican bodies as an optional invitatory canticle immediately preceding the psalm(s) appointed for the day.

Magnificat (The Song of Mary) is a scriptural canticle based on an account in the Gospel of Luke (1:46-55). Mary, the expectant mother of Jesus, visits her cousin Ā Elizabeth, the expectant mother of John the Baptist, who will prophetically proclaim the coming of the Messiah. Elizabeth praises Mary for her faith and subjection to Godā€™s will, and Mary responds, ā€œMy soul doth magnify the Lord ... for he that is mighty hath magnified me ... and his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations.ā€ The Magnificat is said or sung immediately after the first lesson (scripture reading) in the service of evening prayer.
Ā
Nunc Dimittis (The Song of Simeon) is also a scriptural canticle taken from Luke (2:29-32). Ā Simeon, a devout Jew, had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah. When Mary and Joseph bring the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem for the ceremony of redemption of the firstborn son, Simeon takes the child into his arms and says ā€œLord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace ... for mine eyes have seen thy salvation.ā€ The Nunc Dimittis is said or sung after the second lesson in evening prayer.

Texts for these settings are from The Book of Common Prayer (2019), Traditional Language Edition, according to the use of the Anglican Church in North America, and they are largely the texts of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England.

Composed by Various. Arranged by Curtis Hanson. Sacred. Octavo. 10 pages. Curtis Hanson #4573081. Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719735).

As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal/choral tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. The hymns in this set include Make Me a Captive, Lord, Beneath the Cross of Jesus, and Abide with Me.

Composed by Richard Joseph Barber. Christian,Contemporary,Gospel,Sacred. Octavo. 16 pages. Barber Music Company #4727369. Published by Barber Music Company (A0.915699).

Dedication

Sometime in the 1980's, Richard Tober, a brother in Christ who was also an appliance repair man, came to our house on Hill Street in Coloma, Michigan to fix our kitchen range. He knew that I was a composer, and during the course of his time with us that day he told about his love for Jesus and his aspiration to write poetry with music to express that love. He didn't feel he was equipped to put music to his words, but he did have a poem that he gave me, wondering if I would set it to music for him. It was a difficult task because Richard's poetry was not set up in any formal poetic fashion; it was, however, a fulfilling task because his poem was such a simple, childlike, personal expression of his love for the Lord. I Am Going Home to Glory is the result of our collaboration. He was thrilled with the outcome. Now that Richard has left this world to be with Jesus, I am happy that God allowed and enabled me to set Richard's poem to music. -Richard Barber

A dramatically beautiful, sacred hymn with music by Kevin G. Pace and text by Mary Ann W. Snowball.

Text:
When in the dark with vision obscured,
My prayer is answered from Godā€™s peace conferred:
ā€œBe not afraid; oh, be not dismayed.
Jesus is near thee; for thy soul He paid.ā€

I am a covā€™nant chi-ld of God.
His holy Son draws my honor and laud.
I feel Christā€™s love; to Him I am bound.
Fearlessness comes from his merited crown.

I am an heir of Abrahamā€™s seed;
I will be blessed for each covā€™nant I heed.
I can be strong in these latter days.
Courage will come with Christā€™s infinite aid.

I will trust God and his Son of Man.
I know I can for I know whose I am.
I will hold tight to heavenā€™s sure rod,
For I am a covā€™nant child of God.

I am a child in Godā€™s family.
He knows my name and He calls me to be
Humble and bold, and in Him confide.
Jesus has promised Heā€™ll be by my side.

I can proclaim my legacy acquired
Because of my Saviorā€™s most holy desire.
Iā€™ll not forget my heritage bought,
For I am a covā€™nant child of God.

Composed by Gwyneth W. Walker. Christmas, Christmas-Sacred. 24 pages. Duration 4 minutes, 15 seconds. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8794-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8794-E).

English.

ā€œBorn in Bethlehemā€ is a numbers song, similar to ā€œThe Twelve Days of Christmas.ā€ Each group traveling to the Nativity, or associated with Jesus, is presented in ascending numerical order, from one to twelve. [ā€œOne for the little bitty Babyā€¦Twelve for the Twelve Apostlesā€] Once the complete set has been introduced, the numbers are performed in reverse order, in a frantic, prestissimo race from twelve to one. This is an energetic song!
The Clarinet plays a featured role, enhancing the message of the lyrics. For example, the phrase ā€œChildren, go where I send theeā€ is matched by the Clarinet scampering up a scale as children setting forth on a trip. And the next line, ā€œHow shall I send thee?ā€ has the Clarinet/children coming back down the scale, returning home. Duration: 4:15.

When I see the world through a childā€™s eyes,

I see mountains and bluebirds and bright butterflies;

I feel sand through my toes when at the beach

And the apples on the tree just out of reach.

When I see the world through a childā€™s eyes,

Itā€™s easy to believe in a Heavenly Father so wise,

That He created this earth and all its beauty untold;

I still hope to see it that way when Iā€™m old.

When I see a family through the eyes of a child,

I see a father who provides and a mother who smiles;

I have brothers and sisters who are kind to me

And we all play together in harmony.

When I see a family through the eyes of a child,

I can believe in Heavenly Parents, loving and mild,

I can view each person as someone of worth

And accept them as Godā€™s family here on the earth.

When I see others through the eyes of a child,

I can learn compassion, to speak without guile;

I can be teachable, forgiving, honest, and true,

When I see the kind things others may do.

Itā€™s easy to believe in a God who is just,

When I learn from others to show mercy and trust.

I can learn patience while waiting a while,

For Godā€™s blessings to come to an obedient child.

(Optional for the Christmas season)

When I see Christmas through a childā€™s eyes,

I feel laughter and magic and wondrous surprise;

I love lights and music and cookies and songs,

I want to serve others and never do wrong.

Itā€™s easy to believe when Baby Jesus was born

Though ā€˜twas long ago on that Christmas morn,

That Love had come down to redeem and glorify,

When I see our Savior through a childā€™s eyes.

A beautiful, Christmas hymn with music by Kevin G. Pace and text by Mary Ann W. Snowball. Text: To Bethlehem, so very long ago, A mother, with her husbandā€™s care, was travā€™ling on a donkey there. Even great with Child that day, through many miles they made their way to Bethlehem. To Bethlehem a hallowed Baby came! Godā€™s holy Child on the earth fulfilled past forecasts of his birth. Jesus Christ came from above and brought with Him pure endless love to Bethlehem. To Bethlehem a wondrous star appeared. While lighting up a night-time sky blessed angels echoed reasons why. Trumpeting the awesome sight, called shepherds ran this holy night to Bethlehem. To Bethlehem all people now could look. Messiah, who forgives mankind, would be the Savior through all time. Jesus is his holy Name! So long ago this Baby came to Bethlehem . . . to Bethlehem.
