One of the most iconic hymns of Christmas arranged by American composer James Nathaniel Holland and expanded with an original new chorus with new text. This arrangement/new work contains both traditional melodies (Flow Gently and Away in a Manger). “The Christ Child's Lullaby” is an English translation of the Scots Gaelic “Tàladh Chrìosda,” a Christmas carol adapted and popularized in the 20th century from a longer work written in 1855 by Catholic priest Ranald Rankin for his parishioners at Fort William in the Scottish Highlands.

Rankin’s hymn, representing a lullaby for the Christ Child by the Virgin mother Mary, was intended for performance at Midnight Mass (the first mass of Christmas) and is still sung then at churches in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland today. Titled “Tàladh ar Slànaigheir” (“The Lullaby of our Savior”) and containing 29 verses, it is altogether a lullaby, a retelling of elements of the Nativity story, and an explication of the nature and work of Christ. 

The English text of “The Christ Child’s Lullaby” (containing three verses and alleluias) is one of many translations, adaptations, and variants of the original Scots Gaelic text. The tune, too, is one of many variants of a traditional Hebridean folk melody. It has been further adapted and newly harmonized in this medium-easy arrangement for SATB choir and organ, featuring solo soprano on verse 1, sopranos-altos in open harmonies on verse 2, and full SATB in rich harmonies on verse 3 and the concluding “Alleluias.”

An allusion to Lamentations 1:12 (Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? Behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow....), Have, Have Ye No Regard is a setting for solo baritone, SATB voices, and organ of Robert Herrick's (1591-1674) poem, His Saviour's Words, Going to the Cross:

Have, have ye no regard, all ye 
Who pass this way, to pity Me, 
Who am a man of misery? 
A man both bruis'd and broke, and one 
Who suffers not here for Mine own, 
But for My friends' transgression! 

Ah, Sion's daughters, do not fear

“Softly the Night is Sleeping†is a Nativity poem by the Rev. Edward Abiel Washburn (1819-1881), a noted American Episcopal clergyman who studied at both Harvard and Yale, and who served parishes in Newburyport, Massachusetts; Hartford, Connecticut; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and New York City. A noted preacher, he also translated Latin hymns as well as authoring a number of his own poems.

In three verses, Washburn’s poem recalls the Bethlehem hillside where shepherds watched their flocks by night, the virgin mother Mary, the infant Jesus in the manger, the heavenly host singing “Gloria,†the bright star shining above, the arrival of the Magi, and more. Each unison verse, which may be assigned as written or at the director’s discretion, is followed by a chorus with full SATB voices singing “Glory to God! Peace on the earth, good will to men.â€

Includes parts for solo C instrument (oboe, flute, violin) or solo Bb clarinet.

The piece can be performed in several ways - possible options are:


The 1st verse/refrain is solo voices (perhaps one voice, or one section). Men would sing an octave lower.

The 2nd, 3rd and 4th verses/refrains are accompanied by an increasingly layered drone. The drone could be a mix of organ and/or instruments and voices. The voices sing the drone to ‘ay’ and will need to stagger their breaths. By the 4th verse the drone is in three lines - and perhaps is in organ or instruments alone because voices are all singing the melody line. The ascending chromatic line could be doubled an octave lower. Each line of the drone begins at the end of the previous refrain.

At each verse more singers join the melody line. The melody may be played by organ/instruments as well.
The 4th refrain is the loudest.

The 5th verse is sung without the drone. It might be effective for this to be performed with a gradual diminuendo, or for singers to drop out one by one.

This lilting Christmas song, based on a 15th-century German carol, is arranged in call-and-response style for solo voice and harmonized SATB choir, with organ (or piano) accompaniment. The solo voice part is pitched at mid-range and could be sung by soprano, alto, tenor, or bass. For variety, the solo voice part could also be doubled or performed solo by instruments such as violin, clarinet, flute, etc. Alternatively, the solo part could be sung by the congregation in unison, with the church choir providing the responses in harmony. The carol and accompaniment are easy and accessible for any choir. With the words for 8 verses included, this carol works well when a song of variable length is needed, such as for communion, a processional, or congregational candle-lighting. From his Pater noster for soloists, choir and orchestra, written in the form of a cantata, in which the original Latin text is combined with the new German translation of the former President of the Bundestag, Norbert Lammert, Stefan Heucke has taken an almost seven-minute German version for mixed choir and organ for practical use and newly arranged it. The text version of Norbert Lammert uses a direct and concise language which reinterprets several archaic expressions of the traditional translation: 'Dein Reich kommt, wenn dein Wille geschieht, auch auf Erden'. Stefan Heucke set the choral parts in major/minor-mode homophony in a deliberately simple way. The organ basically supports the choral setting and expands it rhythmically and harmonically now and then.
