It was originally composed for and premiered by the Choir of St. Paul's Carroll Street in Brooklyn, NY and was dedicated to its then Rector, The Revered Peter Cullen. The premiere was conducted by the composer in Sunday Mass on the Feast of the Transfiguration. This harmonically surprising setting is suitable for liturgical or concert use and is short and simple enough to put together when rehearsal time is at a premium.

John 1:5.The text of Lux in tenebris—a single verse from the prologue to the gospel of John—was chosen in conjunction with the commissioning party, who requested a sacred text with universal appeal that could address the hopes and fears that all people share. The composition elaborates on the text's juxtaposition between the darkness of despair and the light of hope. Dissonant, layered ostinati built on fragments of the text illustrate the omnipresent darkness (mm. 1-25). The second half of the piece (m. 29ff.) changes key and meter, employing the entire text to emphasize the persistent shining and eternal triumph of the light. Duration: 4:30Lux in tenebris was premiered in December 2016 by the Chamber Singers of First Community Church (Columbus, Ohio) at the church’s annual Candlelight Christmas concert, and reprised for the Holy Week Tenebrae service in April 2017.

The lamenting nature contrasts the feeling of peace normally associated with this text to make it especially effective once the texture begins to change. Dissonance is used to create a sense of unease and sorrow, which through repetition unfolds to the climax, where light is revealed and the proverbial heavens open! Lux Aeterna was premiered by Accord Ensemble, Edmonton, Canada, June 2017. This piece is uploaded as a 2017 Choral Contest Entry through SMP Press.

It is written in a block chord format, like that of early church music. The song focuses on the key of G minor, but also goes between Bb major and D major.

The text, taken from the Mass for the Dead, has been treated in a hopeful way, by no means in a mournful one. Within an always calm and meditative atmosphere, I tried to give a 'luminous' treatment of the Latin word Lux, as if it came from a very distant place, from the infinite space, out of this world. This is a revised and final version.

Later, English words concerning the struggles to end repression are juxtaposed against the Latin text. The Westminster Quarters bell song is employed with the words, fiat lux and Li-yakun nur, Latin and Arabic for let there be light. Duration: 3:45.
