The Traditional Latin Requiem Mass is a musical genre that brought the Western musical tradition important works ranging from composers such as Mozart, Faure, Berlioz, Verdi, Palestrina and Victoria. This is a newly composed setting of the Latin text of the Requiem Mass from Stephanie Martin, a master of the choral idiom. This setting of the Requiem has solid choral writing, beautiful melody and rich harmonies. It is that sort of sensuous music that is choirs love to sing, and which stirs the hearts of listeners.

In 2017, All Souls’ Church in San Diego, California, commissioned Martin to composed a Requiem for All Souls. Martin’s Requiem for All Souls was premiered on Souls’ Day, November 2, 2017, and dedicated in loving memory of The Reverend Edward Kellogg. On the day before the premiere, Chris Jennewein of the Times of San Diego wrote: This is the first major musical commission in the church’s history, but follows the centuries-long tradition of churches commissioning new music from significant composers. ‘Today many people don’t realize that the music commissioned by churches for performance during Masses, holy days, and other ceremonies forms a part of what we now call classical music,’ says Ruben Valenzuela, who is All Souls’ Director of Music and will conduct the premiere. So many of the landmark works we still love and perform were in many cases commissioned by churches or other religious institutions. Martin’s 25-minute Requiem for All Souls is set to the traditional Latin text of the Requiem Mass and will be performed a cappella. Valenzuela describes it as a work of pure, beautiful vocal music grounded in traditional church music.

This R&B classic works so well you just might be amazed. It is voiced for solo-SATB. (If you have an alto ((or soprano)) with a deep rich tone, you've found your lead vocalist).

This arrangement combines the best of Carole King's words with the soul of Aretha. Since this is more of an R&B groove you won't hear the dissonance and syncopation used for many of the jazz choral tunes you'll find here, but it is not short on feeling (especially with a soulful lead). It is an easy piece to perform and should be well received (especially by the Baby Boomers). Just don't move it too fast.

This is a big four-minute festival choir arrangement which may be accompanied by piano or piano/orchestra (with the orchestral score and parts posted separately on Sheet Music Plus). It begins and ends with a choral fanfare, reflecting the exuberance of the Charles Wesley text. This would be ideal for sacred music conferences or use by church-affiliated university choirs and orchestras, especially schools connected to the Wesleyan/Holiness tradition. The ultimate would be to have the Mormon Tabernacle choir and orchestra perform it (please, Mr. Wilberg!) :-)
