Hong Kong Singer-songwriter Serrini released her fourth album Don't Text Him in 2017, which is the first one recorded in a professional studio. Unlike the humorous and playful style in her earlier songs, this lyrical title track Don't Text Him uses a simple melody with a backing piano to tell a story of unrequited love. Her attempt to adapt a more diversified style soon became her fans' favourite. The choral arrangement is made by Alexander Wong, a renowned collaborative pianist in Hong Kong. Through the use of a simple homophonic style with some word-painting, he quoted many pieces in the piano part to reflect on the lyrics, such as Wish by Jan Tien-hao, Dandelion by Pan Xingzimin, When the World Quiets Down by Shih Ching-Ju, Clair de lune by Debussy and Cantique de Jean Racine by Fauré,, giving an insightful interpretation to the song.

Although I consider this arrangment a ballad, keeping a steady tempo is key for rhythmic accuracy. The dynamics can paint a vivid vocal picture that hightlights the story the lyrics tell. Just like a painter who tries to catch God’s image on a canvass, the composer strives to catch it on a soundscape. He starts depicting the mystery of God in dayaw ken lawag kawesmo (you are clothed in honor and light) juxtaposed with God’s vast greatness in naindaklan ka unay (you are great) and God’s authority in pannakabalin mot’ agturay (you power rules). With strokes of faith he paints toy kararwak agdaydayaw kenka (my soul worships you). Then he begins to unravel God’s majesty in pagluganam dagiti ulep, pagsakayam ti payak ti angin (you ride on clouds and soar through the wings of the air) before portraying God’s influence over creation in langit ken daga napnuan iti gloriam (heaven and earth are full of your glory). He then struggles to create the best sound describing God by blending all these elements. Finally, he comes to the realization that God is INDESCRIBABLE and just exclaims what he has been saying all along, Annian a kinatan-okmo! (How precious You are!).

The theme of Henze’s Ninth Symphony is his German homeland as he remembers it during the days of his youth and during the war years. He has written this work in homage to all the people who fought back against the oppression of the Third Reich and sacrificed their lives for freedom of thought. Hans-Ulrich Treichel adapted the text from a poem by Anna Seghers. Henze has called the symphony ‘an apotheosis of the terrible and the painful’. The pinnacle of his prolific and varied œuvre, it is worlds apart from ‘Freude schöner Götterfunken’.

My Ninth Symphony deals with my German homeland – as it appeared to me when I was a young man, during the war, and even earlier. Instead of hymning joy, the beautiful divine spark, the men and women of my Ninth Symphony spend the evening conjuring up a world of horror and persecution that is still with us today and that continues to cast its shadows over us. A setting of a very powerful poem by English poet, Ted Hughes, about the onset of autumn in an English (Yorkshire) garden and the surrounding countryside.  It is full of pathos and passion, harmony and dissonance, chaos and peace - just like English weather!

This is a very individual and innovative choral setting of Hughes' poem which is, itself, rich in 'meaty' metaphor and colour - and the composer is a vegetarian! It evokes a savage Nature within a savage landscape where humans and animals compete for space and for food. It is October, the fields and woods and gardens of rural Yorkshire are readying themselves for the cold and desolation (and despair) of winter which isn't far away in time. 'A glass, half-filled with wine, left out(side) To the dark heaven all night, by dawn Has dreamed a premonition of ice across its eye as if the ice-age had begun its heave.'   That is only two and a half stanzas but you see from these lines that there are veiled threats of (Nature's) violence in the heavy tread of the poet's slowly-building angst over what is happening in the surrounding countryside - and his fear grows, and his awe grows, with every line. There is even fear underlining the very last line: 'And now it is about to start.' Winter is creeping closer and closer towards the house and it will not be pleasant to experience!

I have tried to instil a little of this in the music which keeps skidding from consonance to dissonance and back to consonance. Sometimes the dissonance piles up, like snow driven by the wind piles up into deep banks; sometimes the music relaxes into stillness and calm (painted in tonal music) like a crisp, mild late autumn or early winter's day when the sun warms the landscape and life appears bearable, tolerable. I hope this adds to the song's 'charm'. It wasn't easy to write: sometimes the right music was elusive. The music ends with the word 'October' repeated three times, with voices overlapping in a little canon. This conjures up the wistful feelings of the poet as he looks out onto a peaceful scene, soon to be filled with all manner of 'natural violence', while his inner peace will soon be shattered by the mayhem about to be unleashed around him.

Setting Ted Hughes is no easy task. It is for choirs and choirmasters to judge if I have succeeded in conveying the 'sense and sensibility' of a classic 20th century English poem.
