The words of this choral suite were written by the English poet Laurence Binyon in 1914, immediately after the Battle of Mons, where the British Expeditionary Force suffered a serious loss, soon after the start of World War I. The fourth verse (“They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old�) has become known as the “Ode of Remembrance�, regularly recited at memorial services. This suite uses the words of the Ode for the first movement, with echoes of the bugle call “The Last Post�. The second movement, “They went with songs to the battle� portrays the soldiers as young men in fine fettle, physically and mentally fit for what lies ahead of them. The third movement, “As the stars that shall be bright as we are dust� compares the war dead to stars and constellations. They move “in marches upon the heavenly plain�. Will Longstaff’s painting “Menin Gate at Midnight� (reproduced on the cover of this score) movingly illustrates this concept, with ghostly soldiers marching by the Menin Gate at Ypres, Belgium. Beer Barrel Polka (Roll Out the Barrel). composed by Czech musician Jaromir Vejvoda (1927), evolved to become famous ‘round the world, especially because of its many transformations in pre-World War II Europe.  In America, it became popular for its English lyrics about a garden party that livens up when the beer begins to flow.  This song, incidentally, has been ‘unofficially adopted’ by Wisconsin as a ‘state song’ and is often played for Wisconsin sporting events, not to mention beer halls and gardens everywhere.  This arrangement is for a 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment.  Performance time: 2:05+  Its novelty makes this a perfect ‘ask the audience to join in’ number.

Brahms composed Ein deutsches Requiem, nach Worten der heiligen Schrift, his longest composition, during the period, 1865-1868. For the libretto, he eschewed the Latin text of the Roman Catholic Requiem Mass, using instead verses he chose from the German-language Luther Bible. Thus, it was A German Requiem. The Roman Church’s Requiem Mass begins with prayers for the dead; Brahms, on the other hand, chose to console the living and framed his first movement around the second of the Beatitudes, Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted.  The first movement is, indeed, comforting, filled with warmth and beauty. This arrangement retains Brahms’ original choral parts and translates the orchestral accompaniment to the five quietly playing brass instruments. The audio sample was digitally created, so the choral part of the arrangement can be heard but without words. This arrangement was completed in 2017 and runs about 10 minutes, 32 seconds. In early summer 2014 I attended the funeral of Marc Baires, a former student.  Always a sad affair, his passing was unusual for me in that it marked the first time I had “witnessed� the illness and eventual passing of a former student via social media.  Though heavily involved in music in high school Mark had chosen science as his career path and was a successful scientist at a prominent, local biotech firm.  Mark approached his cancer diagnosis with a matter-of-fact, analytical attitude and posted frequent updates about his condition, culminating with a posthumous message from his loved ones.   The prayer card handed out at Marc’s funeral featured the Afterglow poem by Helen Lowry Marshall (1904 - 1975).  It moved me greatly, as the message of love and comfort for those left behind was totally consistent with Marc’s generous spirit, something that was confirmed in the eulogies of his colleagues.  I decided that I would attempt to set the poem in a treatment that, hopefully, conveyed the intent of Afterglow, and that honored a man who had brought smiles to many with his somewhat goofy personality and his many unselfish deeds.Musical noteConductors should try to honor the metronomic markings to create the feeling steady forward motion.  The leaps in the main theme should be sung as delicately as possible.

Instrumentally, this piece is suitable for early intermediate players, making this a perfect choice for your youth ensemble. All string parts are in first position, and there is an extensive pizzicato section that will help your students focus on rhythmic accuracy. Flute parts include articulation markings designed to encourage musicality and include a 2 1/2 octave range.
