An anthem composed by Philip le Bas especially suitable for church choirs during Lent (or Advent) and Holy Week. It might also be particularly suitable for Remembrance services.

The Jacobean poet Phineas Fletcher’s passionate prayer of repentance is here set to music for SATB choir and organ. In a series of pulsating descending scales the author’s words express heartfelt remorse for his sins, reflecting the story of Jesus and the weeping woman in Luke 7:36ff. This is real, deep sorrow and regret, looking to the Prince of Peace for forgiveness: at one poignant moment the music reaches a point of stillness as the slow tears continue to fall.

The weeping then turns to anger, crying for vengeance, because sin doth never cease. The music rises to an intense climax, but suddenly vanishes; the anger is, after all, self-directed. Finally the text returns to a prayer of supplication to drown all my faults and fears, and the harmonies end with a hope-filled hint of future healing.

Drop, drop, slow tears,
and bathe those beauteous feet,
which brought from heaven
the news and Prince of Peace.

Cease not, wet eyes,
his mercies to entreat;
to cry for vengeance,
sin doth never cease.

Mad World is a 1982 song by British band Tears for Fears, written by Roland Orzabal. Twenty-years later it achieved a second round of success with a cover by Michael Andrews and his childhood buddy Gary Jules for the soundtrack of the film Donnie Darko. Stripped down, the marriage of simple haunting music (melody, harmonic structure) with intense, powerful lyrics makes this “a beautiful song� for both the performer and audience member. Mad World is a 1982 song written by Roland Orzabal and sung by Curt Smith, members of the British band Tears for Fears. It was the band's third single release and its first chart hit, reaching number 3 on the UK Singles Chart in November 1982. It has since been covered by an extensive list of singers, most notably by Gary Jules and Michael Andrews for the soundtrack of the 2001 film Donnie Darko. This version became a UK number one hit when it was released as a single in 2003.

Orzabal wrote the song when he was 19, living in an apartment above a pizza shop in Bath. Here he would spend his time looking out the window, strumming guitar and watching people going about their daily business. It's a bizarre viewpoint to watch people go about their daily routine, having to work for a living, when you're sitting in a flat, unemployed, he said. That's where it came from.

In keeping with the poignant simplicity of the Gary Jules version, this choral arrangement seeks to maintain the clarity of the text, with passing dissonances highlighting the word mad. The ending section includes overlapping motif ideas which can be effectively dramatized in accordance with the included performance notes.  

Mad World is available in three voicings – SSA, SAB and SATB – all with piano accompaniment.

Written for the Early Light Academy Spotlight Singers (South Jordan, UT) and taken from actual responses from the students they were asked, when people look at you, what do you want them to see? This song is intended to be a very personal expression for the singers as well as for the audience.

I see: eyes and a face, hands and feet
You see: the same
I see: tears and a smile, working, moving
You see: the same
I see: pain, joy, strength, endurance
You see, you think you see-but you can’t name it.
I see you, please see me.
When you look at me, see a person who isn’t afraid to be-- just be.
I am tall or I am small, but I am happy to be me.
I may be confident or meek, I may be really strong or weak,
And if it changes week to week, it doesn’t matter.
What matters is that you see me.
When you listen, notice that my voice may sometimes raise the roof
And other times it may seem aloof when I cannot find the proof
Of what is truth and what is fair, but listen ‘til you hear me share
