The 1941 classic “Deep in the Heart of Texas†is an American popular song about the state of Texas with lyrics by June Hershey and music by Don Swander. It has been recorded in multiple versions, five of which were on the Billboard charts in 1942. Several university bands in Texas perform the song before football games including the University of Texas Longhorn Band and the Texas Christian University Horned Frog Marching Band, and country music singer and native Texan George Strait has the song played before he takes the stage at concerts. This simple version for SATB voices and piano was arranged by D. Jason Bishop for the Texas Boys Choir.

Composed by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP). Contemporary,Easter,Multicultural,Sacred,World. Octavo. 15 pages. Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP) #4569683. Published by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP) (A0.953617).

Ideal for contemplative, Lenten, memorial services, easy/moderate for SATB (no divisi) with harp or keyboard

Darkness As Light is loosely based on a Venezuelan pasaje rhythm with modified Dorian modality typical of Andean mestizo music. Psalm 139:1-12, 23-24 occurs in the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time in Year A of the Common Lectionary.

Psalm 139: 7-12 Where can I go from your spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? If I ascend to heaven, you are there; if I make my bed in Sheol, you are there. If I take the wings of the morning and settle at the farthest limits of the sea, even there your hand shall lead me, and your right hand shall hold me fast. If I say, ‘Surely the darkness shall cover me, and the light around me become night,’ even the darkness is not dark to you; the night is as bright as the day, for darkness is as light to you.

Shelter in Place by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP) for mixed SSAATB chorus with nature soundtrack created by Chris Clark-Johnson

a setting of Shelter in Place, a poem by Kim Stafford

Commissioned by Lewis & Clark College, Portland, Oregon, April 2021

Founder, composer, and singer with Inversion Ensemble of Austin, Texas, Adrienne Inglis also serves as principal flute with the Central Texas Philharmonic, flute instructor at Southwestern University, and flutist with flute/harp duo Chaski. She has music degrees from Lewis and Clark College and the University of Texas at Austin. An avid birder and environmentalist, she lives in the rural hill country of Central Texas.

Shelter in Place by Kim Stafford (used with permission)

Long before pandemic prisoned us,

the trees knew how to guard their place

with roots and shade.

Moss found how to hug a stone for life.

Every stream knows how to move in place,

stay home and yet flow outward,

sending bounty far.

Now is our time to practice-

now to sing from balconies,

now send words of comfort

by any courier,

now to hoard lonesome generosity-

and then to shine in all directions like stars.

Program note: Shelter in Place (2021) by Adrienne Inglis, commissioned by Lewis & Clark College, Portland, Oregon, April 2021, sets former Oregon poet laureate Kim Stafford’s poem Shelter in Place (2020) for SSAATB mixed choir with Oregon nature soundtrack created by Chris Clark-Johnson, Lewis & C lark College class of 2021. Written during the coronavirus pandemic, the poem expresses how quarantine can serve as a conduit for healing, how words of comfort flow despite barriers, and how the paralysis of sheltering in place generates creative movement. The music and poem draw inspiration from ancient forest wisdom, shown musically with a pentatonic scale. The tight harmonies of Locrian mode bind moss to stone and stream to its own flow. Then vocal expression bursts forth with lush harmonies as singers serenade from balconies, sharing compassion through music. Returning to the pentatonic scale, we overcome obstacles and send generosity beyond our ancient and modern world into the celestial realm.

The nature soundtrack features sounds of the Oregon forest, stream, and night sky.

Acknowledgements: The composer warmly thanks Katherine FitzGibbon, Bailey Dean, Chris Clark-Johnson, Kim Stafford, and the Lewis & Clark College Community Chorale.

Composed by Johnny Mandel. Arranged by Gene Puerling. A Cappella. Octavo. 9 pages. University of North Texas - Gene Puerling Collection #6495673. Published by University of North Texas - Gene Puerling Collection (A0.893242).

This stunning a cappella ballad arrangement of the Johnny Mandel/Johnny Mercer song Emily was penned in 1971 for The Singers Unlimited and still holds up as one of the most beautiful Gene Puerling charts ever written!  It was recorded on their debut album, A Cappella (and contained in the Magic Voices box set). This is NOT a transcription, but an authentic edition created from the handwritten manuscript of Gene Puerling.  The majority of this piece is divided into six parts, with some four- and five-part sections with lush harmonies in a variety of textures, making this a rubato ballad-lovers delight!  (Level V)

By Traditional. By Stephanie K. Andrews. 21st Century,A Cappella,Chamber,Christmas,Sacred. Octavo. 11 pages. Stephanie K Andrews #864941. Published by Stephanie K Andrews (A0.1272747).

O Magnum Mysterium was composed in Austin, Texas in mid-2020 and lovingly dedicated to the Parish Choir at All Saints' Episcopal Church in Austin, Texas, the composer's home parish for over a decade, and to Gregory Eaton, Organist-Choirmaster of All Saints'. From measures 17-21, homage is paid to Irish composer Sir Charles Villiers Stanford (1852-1924), whose Beati quorum via has been sung by the All Saints' Parish Choir on a number of occasions.

Written in the midst of a pandemic during which choirs could not sing together without risk of infection, this was composed in anticipation of the joyous day when we are all able to once again sing together, and as a reminder that, even in the darkest of times, wonder, beauty, awe, mystery, and the love and light of Christ remain with us now and forevermore.

By The Texas Voices. By Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Tom Council. 20th Century. Octavo. 14 pages. Tom Council #679627. Published by Tom Council (A0.1075446).

This was written for a concert by The Texas Voices entitled “The Joy of Food†(Alan Dyer, Director, Jim Loeffler, Accompanist). This was also an opportunity for the audience to donate food for a local pantry. When I thought about what I could contribute to this concert, the same song kept coming into my head. After hearing this song, you will hear bits and pieces from Theodorakas (Zorba the Greek), Bach, Handel, and Vivaldi. For the use, misuse of this wonderful music, I seek forgiveness.
