This is the full score - piano accompaniment, drum and SATB choir.  A choir score is available separately

 This carol is designed to be very easy to learn and perform.  It needs to be accompanied by piano (simple part) and drum (no snare).  A bodhran or cajon would work just as well.

 There is one minor-key tune for both the men and ladies to learn.  (This works as a 4-part round later in the carol)

 Â·        The men start, accompanied just by the piano ostinato.  The drum doesn’t enter until bar 7, when the men finish their ‘drums drumming’

 Â·        While the ladies sing verse 2, the men sing ‘Drum, drum’ in consecutive 5ths.  NB, the melody is slightly different at the end of the ladies’ verse, since the words ‘poor and lowly stable’ need the melody to come down rather than go up

 Â·        Then the ladies sing the ‘Drum, drum’ 5ths whilst the men sing verse 3

 Â·        Everyone sings verse 4 in unison and joyously

 Â·        Everyone then sings verse 4 twice in a round – basses, altos, tenors then sopranos

 Â·        Everyone repeats the last line of verse 4 ‘The child we’ve waited for is born …’ together (the piano and drum cut out so that the voices are unaccompanied in bar 35 – and then resume for bar 36)

 Â·        ‘O hear the angels singing’ (unaccompanied) – then a loud chord and drum on beat 3 of the last bar

Written in the style of classic Christmas carols with fun, memorable melody and lyrics, this new Christmas song will quickly become a part of everyone's caroling canon. By and large, Christmas music is either sacred or secular, about Jesus, Mary, the shepherds and angels or about presents and parties and Santa Claus. We live them both simultaneously. This carol represents that, with the first verse being a patter of excitement and the second more lyrical, focusing on the Advent of the Savior. Then, just as in life, they are sung together, complimenting each other. We end in unison with a glorious and memorable refrain Nativity mangers make friends out of strangers with peace on earth, good will to all men.

* Bells/Chimes sound beautiful but it can also be performed with just piano and the voices singing the bell parts.
* Perfect of school or church Christmas concerts or caroling. Also great for families around the fireplace or out Christmas caroling.
* Written to be sung by two groups, however, there is a cut version (explained in print) that does not require splitting in two groups. It can be sung straight through without overlapping the verses.
* Some harmony parts are indicated in the vocal line. Of course you can sing just the melody in unison all the way through, but there are ample opportunities to break out into fun 2,3 and (in some places) 4-part harmonies. Up to you.

Cantate Domino uses words from the start of Psalm 96. Sung cheerfully - mostly in 6/8, but with occasional 5/8 bars - the music reflects the joy of the Psalmist. Gloria in Excelsis joyously proclaims the angels' words at Christmas, firstly on the organ alone, then with the organ accompanying the same theme in the voices ending on an added 2nd chord. The interesting and easy play on the word gloria between triple and duple meters lends a feeling of a multiple angelic host. The final section of the piece moves from F minor to F major and closes with a 3 against 2 (hemiola) ending. The Angels announcing the birth of a King sang Gloria, sang Gloria.
