As a creator, something I value above all else is the ability to do so with others. There’s a beauty found where minds meet that no one person can achieve alone.

     So, in search of that beauty, before I even started to work on this piece, I met with the students of Waukesha North High School at the end of their 2023 school year. And we talked. We talked about how life was going. The good and bad. The ups and downs. Things lost. Things found… They shared some laughs and even some tears… The conversations we had were unexpectedly poignant and stuck with me throughout the writing process.

     School is a time of great change in our lives and often we are so focused on “getting through� that we don’t really stop to appreciate it until later. This piece celebrates that part of the process. The way we build onto ourselves- acknowledging and accepting that our experiences we have during this time, both good and bad, are crucial to our identity and our ability to move forward in life. They are the cornerstones of who we are and who we become… Inspired by these experiences we shared, I wrote this text. It’s about building a house. The “house� being our self.

Life to Everything, written for SATB divisi and piano, based on the text of Greek Philosopher, Plato.

Plato believed that music had an influence on the soul and can be either good or bad.  In ancient days, music was governed by mathematics, just like the heavenly spheres. This means that the same arithmetic proportions were found in music as in nature, giving music an influence on the soul, just like the stars were considered perfect.

The music set to this text is found in The Wordsworth Dictionary of Musical Notations among other various books, but its origin is unknown.

This song is about the plant “Audrey 2” responding to being threatened because he is mean.  The song refers to waiting, minding manners, changing tone, doing things their way, not knowing what they are messing with or what they are up against, being bad, being had, being mean and green, saving one’s self, good advice, being fighting mad, King Kong, Frankenstein, the Black Lagoon, The Thing, It, the Creature, can’t beat trouble.  This arrangement is shorter than the original, thus avoiding harsh language.  There are also cues for shortening this piece.  This arrangement is designed for high school or college show choir, concert choir or community choir.

I am 17 years old and this the very first composition I have ever written. My vision for the world is to try and help people keep positive no matter how bad or how unbarring the situation may be. There are many people on the planet that have issues that need to be dealt with and I believe that one way that they can help themselves is by trying to thing of the times where things weren't so bad. Even if they were bad, those memories should be the reminders to help you grow throughout life. This is the message that I am trying to portray with Those Memories. At the age of 15, I had a vision to help people not to forget the good and the bad moments of their lives because once the memories are forgotten, people will never be able to go back and tell stories about how they developed and came to be. 
 Some of the lyrics were picked from a poem that was written 4 years ago in 2016 called One Brief Moment by John Fleming. The poem was found on a website that provides poems to those who like reading poems. The website is called poetrysoup.com and I think it's a pretty cool website for poem readers, so if you like poems and you want something new, you can go there and check it out. I hope you all enjoy the piece as much as I had fun writing it. Haha.

The gospel musician wrote the song, one of his most popular, in 1996 during a difficult time in his life. His mother was beginning to show sings of dementia and a family friend was diagnosed with cancer.

 Smallwood said the song came to him in a dream.

I felt left by God, I was trying to write a pity-party song, but God pulled me to do a praise song. God said, ‘I want your praise no matter what the situation you are in, good or bad.’ It’s about trusting him.

In a conducting class one day, we sang through a choral setting of a setting of Christina Rossetti's Remember, filled with beautiful, lush harmonies throughout. The lesson of the day was that this was a bad setting, ignoring the meaning of the text. I then sought to produce a more faithful setting that explores the themes of pain and loss expressed, keeping in mind Rossetti's struggle with depression. While I end the piece with an uplifting tone, the journey to get there explores a wide range of emotions expressed by subtle shifts of harmony, dynamics, and tempo. This piece was a finalist in the 2015 Ithaca Choral Composition Contest, performed by Anthony Maiese and the East Lyme High School chorus.
