In its effortless use of various elements of Baroque practice, I have written a piece which will hopefully be useful for high schools and community colleges with smaller choirs to get students to sing works which can prep them for repertoire. Churches will also find this a work appropriate for any festive occasion and also useful in telling people that composers actually exist today who like the bygone way of doing things. And also with a rather exciting piano part! I certainly enjoy raising the bar.To that end, the A section can be sung on its own as a separate piece, as it is deliberately easier than the B section, which has more chromatic and polyphonic passages. This is the perfect piece to convey to high school students the impression that Baroque music can be exciting, spontaneous, and not old-fashioned, and in a matter which will be immediately perceived to be authentic.The ad libitum trumpet parts are available directly from the composer. Published by Ivo Antognini (A0.1211209). In this Trinity Service (2021) I used the text of the Magnificat as if it were the storyboard of a film. I tried to describe in the utmost detail the emotion the words conveyed to me and the images they suggested. In this composition I have used word-painting, attempting to colour as many words, phrases and situations as possible; hence the score is full of expression markings such as ‘majestic’, ‘with vigour’, ‘lively’, ‘intense’, ‘with affection’ and ‘with verve’. The result is a piece that changes texture rather quickly, and its noble opening theme (‘My soul doth magnify the Lord’) returns only once in abbreviated form (‘He hath filled the hungry with good things’). The following Nunc dimittis has a much more meditative and intimate character with a sparser texture. There are some references to the themes presented in the Magnificat. A motif from the Magnificat, ‘Glory be to the Father, and to the Son’, recurs in almost the same form towards the close of the Nunc dimittis, but in a quieter vein and in 4 rather than the 43 of the Magnificat. The Magnificat and the Nunc dimittis may be performed individually.

The text is based on Psalm 24 and is equally suitable for use during the Advent season or on Palm Sunday when nearly all children's choirs participate in the worship service. Further, it is written so that all ages of choirs could participate. The hymn tune is punctuated by the powerful dialogue from the Psalm: 'Who is the King of Glory' The Lord of hosts, He is the King of Glory!' This ties very well the Psalm ideas to Weissel's paraphrase, and then the closing stanza concludes with a personal response EUR to open the portals of one's heart. Another feature of the anthem s that the entire congregation can join in the singing at the appropriate places by either singing directly from the hymnal or by printing the words in a bulletin (permission is granted). The work can, of course, be used as an anthem, or as an elaborated congregational hymn in addition to another 'anthem' for the day.

I wrote this song to describe my feelings about the atonement of Jesus Christ. It's a conversation with the Savior about His role in my life and my desire to follow Him. It was greatly inspired by the October 2012 General Conference address The First Great Commandment by Elder Jeffrey R. Holland. Elder Holland states: My beloved brothers and sisters, I am not certain just what our experience will be on Judgment Day, but I will be very surprised if, at some point in that conversation, God does not ask us exactly what Christ asked Peter: 'Did you love me?' I think He will want to know if in our very mortal, very inadequate, and sometimes childish grasp of things, did we at least understand one commandment, the first and greatest commandment of them all—'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind' (Luke 10:27; see also Matthew 22:37–38). And if at such a moment we can stammer out, 'Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee,' then He may remind us that the crowning characteristic of love is always loyalty. The title Three Sacred Songs: was given to these pieces rather than the more usual terms anthem or motet because of the strongly secular presence in the texts. The songs were written over a period of some eighteen months. The Shepherd Lad was finished on February 29, 2008. The Round Day and Magdalene’s Song were completed in Brooklyn on June 11, 2009, the music having been originally sketched-out on Christmas Day and Boxing Day 2008, at Putnam Valley, New York. In the first song, The Round Day, the singer hears the voice of the Blessed Virgin Mary as she sings to the glory of God throughout the day. The text was written on June 7, 2008. In The Shepherd Lad, the Spanish mystic Saint John of the Cross describes a shepherd lad’s (Jesus’s) love for a shepherdess (the Church) and how another (the Devil) tempted his love away. Heartbroken, the shepherd climbed a tree, “And threw wide his arms in sweetest charity, Since by His Shepherdess He was forsaken.� The original Spanish text was translated and adapted into Villanelle form by the composer in early December 2004. The text of Magdalene’s Song describes the feelings of a mystic, or a devotee of Jesus, inspired by the fresh beauty, grace and power of the Lord of creation. The main body of the text is given to a soprano solo. The text was written on April 27, 2008. These sacred songs were conceived as being performed either as a set or individually. The composer had secular ensembles in mind, such as college or concert choruses, but these songs may, of course, also be performed in a liturgical setting. The accompanying flute provides introductions, interludes and codas throughout the set and, on a few occasions, plays with the voices. The piano part is ad lib. (optional).
