Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1137248

Composed by John Ross. Classical,Patriotic. Octavo. 12 pages. John Ross #737448. Published by John Ross (A0.1137248).

“For the Fallen†was written for Bec Beall and her choir “Lux Alba†and was premiered by them in 2019 at St Matthew’s Church, Albury, NSW, Australia. The words of this choral suite were written by the English poet Laurence Binyon in 1914, immediately after the Battle of Mons, where the British Expeditionary Force suffered a serious loss, soon after the start of World War I. The fourth verse (“They shall not grow old as we that are left grow oldâ€) has become known as the “Ode of Remembranceâ€, regularly recited at memorial services. This suite uses the words of the Ode for the first movement, with echoes of the bugle call “The Last Postâ€. The second movement, “They went with songs to the battle†portrays the soldiers as young men in fine fettle, physically and mentally fit for what lies ahead of them. The third movement, “As the stars that shall be bright as we are dust†compares the war dead to stars and constellations. They move “in marches upon the heavenly plainâ€. Will Longstaff’s painting “Menin Gate at Midnight†(reproduced on the cover of this score) movingly illustrates this concept, with ghostly soldiers marching by the Menin Gate at Ypres, Belgium. The work concludes with an alternate setting of the opening movement “They shall not grow oldâ€. A version of this suite with organ accompaniment is also available on this website.

Composed by Roland Rogers. Arranged by David Warin Solomons. Christian,Romantic Period. Octavo. 7 pages. David Warin Solomons #432529. Published by David Warin Solomons (A0.576776).

Transcription of Roland Rogers' victorian choral piece The Storm, with words by Adelaide Anne Procter (who also wrote the words for the famous song by Arthur Sullivan The Lost Chord) An arrangement of this music for woodwind quartet is also available on this site. The sound sample is sung by me (transposed down a fourth). The tempest rages wild and high, The waves lift up their voice and cry Fierce answers to the angry sky, - Miserere Domine. Through the black night and driving rain, A ship is struggling, all in vain To live upon the stormy main; - Miserere Domine. The thunders roar, the lightnings glare, Vain is it now to strive or dare; A cry goes up of great despair, - Miserere Domine. The stormy voices of the main, The moaning wind, the pelting rain Beat on the nursery window pane: - Miserere Domine. Warm curtained was the little bed, Soft pillowed was the little head; The storm will wake the child, they said: Miserere Domine. Cowering among his pillows white He prays, his blue eyes dim with fright, Father save those at sea to-night! Miserere Domine. The morning shone all clear and gay, On a ship at anchor in the bay, And on a little child at play, - Gloria tibi Domine!

I may not be the one to brighten your eye,

I may not be the one whose heart makes you fly,

I may not be the one who shows you His ways,

But know I am one who for you prays.

I may not be the one who gave everything

To bring you back to God, our glorious King,

I cannot save your soul or cleanse it or mend,

But this I can do, forever be your friend.

I may not be the one who knows all the truth.

It's true I may have been a faltering youth,

But now I know my God, who saved me from sin

By sending His Son who let me in.

So now I am the one who will testify,

And now I am the one who'll reach out to try

To bless a friend in need, just as I've been blessed,

Until we in heaven find eternal rest.

Composed by Eoghan Desmond. A Cappella,Celtic,Irish. 15 pages. Seolta Music Limited #882412. Published by Seolta Music Limited (A0.1291800).

Oxen of the Sun, composed for the Choral Scholars of University College Dublin and Irish horn player Cormac Ó hAodáin in 2017, is a true celebration of the miracle of childbirth.

Quoting a fragment of text from Chapter 14 of James Joyce’s Ulysses, composer Eoghan Desmond portrays childbirth as a divine mystery. The greeting fanfare of a solo horn in tandem with the choir depicts a mystical incantation by doctors in Dublin’s Holles Street Maternity Hospital – ‘Deshil Holles Eamus/clockwise we go’, in other words, ‘while we wait for the mother to give birth, we will proceed in a clockwise manner’. The birthing begins with active music on the words ‘send us bright one, light one, Hornhorn, quickening and wombfruit’.

The Rosary of the Seven Rays is a musical meditation on seven events in the life of The Virgin Mary and of Jesus Christ--the Annunciation, the Nativity, the Arrival of the Magi, the Resurrection, the Ascension, the Assumption, and the Crowning of the Virgin--and how these are examples of the spiritual principles of Will, Love and Harmony, Contemplation, Peace out of conflict, Science, Devotion, and Ritual. While the texts are sacred, the piece is best suited to a concert environment.

SKU: A0.1024036

Composed by John Garrett. Christian,Contemporary,Sacred. Octavo. 9 pages. John Garrett #28223. Published by John Garrett (A0.1024036).

This is a deeply moving and inspirational piece of choral writing that contrasts the full choir with two soprano soloists. Although originally commissioned for a Cathedral performance with two boy Sopranos it works equally well with girl or female Sopranos. It sensitively portrays the conflicting emotions of sadness and hope of salvation. As such it is ideally suited to both a sacred and secular performances. John Garrett is a singer, educator and conductor of several choirs in the UK. He is also a Fellow of the London College of Music, and a licentiate of Trinity College London.

SKU: A0.1030990

Composed by Robert Kirby. Christmas,Sacred. Octavo. 10 pages. Robert Kirby #2959553. Published by Robert Kirby (A0.1030990).

This exquisitely melancholy and evocative carol, imagining the Nativity in a snowy Northern landscape, was originally written by Christina Rossetti (1830-1894) as a Christmas poem for an American magazine, Scribner’s Monthly, in 1872. Few carols can express the quiet heart of Christmas more movingly. Gustav Holst (1874-1934) originally set the poem to music for the 1906 edition of The English Hymnal. In verse one, Rossetti describes the harsh conditions of Earth at the time of Christ’s birth in Bethlehem. In verse two, Rossetti contrasts Christ's first and second coming. The third verse portrays the differences between the transcendental angels attendant at Christ's birth and Mary's ability to render Jesus physical affection. The final verse shifts the depiction to a more introspective thought process. In this version of In the Bleak Midwinter, Georgia composer Robert Kirby has given the text a new, introspective melody.
