Fannie Isabelle Sherrick was an American poet who wrote songs and poems throughout the 1860's that captured hearts and minds. I Can Not Say the Sad Good-Bye was one of her notable songs published in 1873. She was both influenced and encouraged by Ella Wheeler Wilcox who she attributed her success to. Her most popular poetry volume entitled Love or Fame and Other Poems was published in 1880 by W.S Bryan of St Louis and she continued writing for many years.

ON THE LAKE
There's a beautiful lake where the sun lies low, And the skies are warm with their summer glow; And a beautiful picture there I see Where the winds are warm and the waves are free, And the waves lie still in the sun As the flowers at night, when the day is done. You may sing of your silvery seas by night When the moon looks down with a dreamy light; And the stars shine out in the skies above Like the warm sweet gaze of the eyes of love; But the glow on the lake to-day Is a glory that never will fade away. The beautiful lake is a sea of gold And the beauty it wears will never grow old; The trees bend down in the sun's warm glow Till their branches meet in the waves below, And the clouds in the far-off skies Are mirrored anew where the sunlight lies. I love to float where the shadows lie 'Neath the matchless glow of the summer sky; And I love to dream that these waves of light Will never fade in the gloomy night: But I know that the things I love Are as far from my reach as the clouds above. Oh, the beautiful lake is a sea of gold And the beauty it wears will never grow old; The cloudlets of Heaven are mirrored there In a golden splendor so bright and fair That the soul is dazzled for aye By the beautiful light of this summer's day. Remembering the events of Jesus' last hours leading up to his crucifixion and death is one of the extraordinary opportunities Christians have during Holy Week. This service of worship dramatizes the events and recaptures those solemn and sacred moments. The Canonical Hours of Matins and Lauds, recited and sung on the evenings of the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday before Easter Sunday, is called the 'Tenebrae,' which means 'darkness' or 'shadows.' It is named for the practice of extinguishingall but one of the prepared candles in the worship space during the course of the service. Mr. Wagner's service of Tenebrae focuses on seven episodes in the Passion and Death of Our Lord, and his choral music, all original, is passionate, dynamic and devotional. In addition, he has arranged his choral accompaniment for either keyboard or string ensemble. Congregational responsive readings and scriptural references also become a part of this exceptional observance. Performance time: 20-25 min.

Reminiscent of the traditional Hawaiian ballads and anthems, this inspirational song guides the singers and audiences to come together and rejoice in coming back from devastating times. A brief choral prelude leads to the solo introduction of the melody. The song continues to expand and grow in its texture, coming to the wider harmonic structures in the bridge and the final declarations of the residents of Lahaina. The choir has the option to move from its original stage formation to gather closer to the audience during the song. Let this song of victory be echoed in your life in your moments of triumph!

This is the first movement from the extended choral work Rising from the Ashes: Stories of Lahaina.

Depicting the devastation and horror incurred in the Maui wildfires of August 2023, the choir and drums establish a powerful and unrelenting rhythmic drive without slowing down.  The text of the melody gets further illustrated with texture painting (wind blowing) and chord clusters (sirens), culminating in the cacophony of all these sounds along with a small ensemble from the choir making shouts and shrieks. As the music fades away, so does the hope of the Lahaina residents as their homeland is burned away forever.

The Angel Gabriel is especially useful for Lessons and Carols and Christmas Eve church services.
The main tune is the traditional Basque carol, GABRIEL'S MESSAGE. Music of verse 3 is newly composed.
The words have been almost completely rewritten to follow more closely the scripture passage, Luke 1:26-38, the account of the Annunciation.

The angel Gabriel was sent by God

To Mary in a town in Galilee.

He greeted her and said, The Lord is with you now.

In August 2023 wildfires spread throughout the Hawaiian island of Maui, eventually destroying the town of Lahaina. With homes burned to the ground and many casualties incurred, the residents of Lahaina began to make efforts to rebuild their homeland as well as to move on from this devastating event. Inspired by these events and the artistry created by the students and teachers of Lahaina, this choral multimovement work represents the events of the horror, aftermath, and triumph from going through powerful events such as this. Each movement is distinct in their performance textures and message. Cacophony, aleatory, call and response, and even a mele hula are just some of the features included with this work. Three drums (pahu) supplement the performance with their driving rhythms and supportive, emphatic passages. This work is dedicated to the victims and survivors of the Lahaina wildfires. Your audience will be taken on a journey of hope at your choir’s next performance.
