SATB choir unaccompanied - Moderately Easy - Digital Download

SKU: MQ.8208-E

Composed by Anthony Antolini and Dimitri S. Bortniansky. Arranged by Anthony Antolini. Advanced/Collegiate. Church Anniversary, Confirmation, Memorial, Classical. Instrument part. 10 pages. Duration 4 minutes, 15 seconds. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8208-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8208-E).

French, Russian.

The Russian version, Kol' slaven, sets the poetry of M. M. Kheraskov (1733–1807), a Mason. The hymn was first associated with Freemasonry in Russia, but its popularity quickly grew. It became an unofficial national anthem until it was superseded by Lvov's “God save the Tsar.” Except during the Soviet period (1917–1991), Kol' slaven has been used in Russia at public gatherings and military ceremonies such as the christening of ships, lowering or raising of the flag, and at military funerals. Kol' slaven also became popular among émigré Russians and has been associated with Russian emigration in many countries.

The singing of hymns with multiple verses in chorale style is not a part of Russian Orthodox worship. For this reason, Bortniansky's hymn is not considered liturgical in the Russian Church but is used mostly for secular ceremonies. The language of the hymn is Russian (although with several archaic words and word endings) rather than the language of Russian Orthodox worship, Church Slavonic. In Germany, the hymn is used not only in worship but also for military ceremonies and is occasionally sung as a prelude to the German national anthem.

This scholarly performance edition includes extensive notes concerning the history of Bortniansky and this piece, performance notes, the editorial method of the English singing version, and a pronunciation guide for the Russian transliteration.

Composed by Anthony Antolini and Pavel Grigorievich Chesnokov. Arranged by Anthony Antolini. Advanced/Collegiate. 20th Century, Communion. Instrument parts. 8 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8248-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8248-E).

English, Slavonic.

Nye ímamï inïya pómoshchi comes from a set of ten communion hymns, Opus 25. It is technically a kontakion, (a hymn sung in commemoration of a feast day, whether referring to Christ, the Virgin Mary, or to a saint). Nye ímamï inïya pómoshchi is intended to be sung for the feast day commemorating an icon of the Virgin entitled “The joy of all who sorrow,” (Всех скорбящих Радость|Vsekh skorbyashchikh Radost') observed on October 24 in the Orthodox Church calendar. The author of the text is unknown. In contemporary church practice, this work is sometimes sung during the communion of the clergy. Although other pieces in Opus 25 are based on traditional church chants, Nye ímamï inïya pómoshchi contains original music that is not based on any preexisting chant.

The present edition is based on the first edition published in Moscow by Pyotr Ivanovich Jurgenson. The keyboard reduction has been modified from the Jurgenson edition. Russian Orthodox performance practice forbids the use of musical instruments to accompany church singing. Organ accompaniment, if used, should be unobtrusive. The Jurgenson edition includes Chesnokov's use of a quarter note without metronome marking. This indicates that the pulse is in a moderato tempo in quarter notes. A tempo of approximately 69 to the quarter note is suggested. The Jurgenson edition has inconsistent dynamic markings in various parts and text appears only below the soprano and tenor parts. For clarity and convenience, these indications have been included in each staff in the present edition.

This scholarly performance edition includes notes concerning the history of Chesnokov and this piece, performance notes, the editorial method of the English singing version, and a pronunciation guide for the Slavonic transliteration.

The original version of this emigrant song is quite simple: same melody repeats throughout the song. More, the existing vocal arrangements I've heard are quite steady and not so rhythmic.

So I tried to add some movement: there is a musical introduction with little lyrics and then we move on to the main theme, where the bass gives rhythm to the main melody.

Shortly after, with a Queen-inspired variation coming from Bohemian Rhapsody the score modulates in a close key, to underline the singing of the brothers of the song's sad heroin and immediately after the theme softens to leave room to the sad mother heralding the coming tragedy.

A tragedy that is sung immediately afterwards, in minor, and then returns to the main melody until the finale, where after a choral phrase we return to the main theme.

Composed by Robinson McClellan. Magnificat/Nunc Dimittis. National Collegiate Choral Organization Choral Series. Magnificat/Nunc Dimittis, 21st Century. 17 pages. Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital #1.3473-E. Published by Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital (MQ.1.3473-E).

UPC: 600313134739. English, Latin.

At times mysterious, prayerful, and jubilant, this fascinating setting contrasts four soloists singing the text in English alternately with the chorus, which sings it in Latin. This piece was written to follow Monteverdi's Magnificat primo tuono a quattro voci da cappella from the collection Selva morale spirituale. However this Nunc dimittis can be performed alone, in which case the antiphon may precede it.

Composed by Margaret Woodley. Christian,Praise & Worship,Sacred. 17 pages. Margaret Woodley #919856. Published by Margaret Woodley (A0.1333615).

A setting which is intended to be quite easy, whilst interesting, for 4-part church choirs.
Set for SATB (no divisi) with parts often singing as duets according to the text.  The Magnificat also has very short solo lines for Sop and Tenor.
Entries for each choir voice are kept as simple as possible, often using the same note as previously sung.
Although the work modulates generally between C major and C minor/Eb major, this occurs naturally without uncomfortable intervals and is well led by the organ manuals accompaniment.
Timings : Mag : 4:40 mins,   Nunc : 2:35 mins.

Composed by Kirsten Duncan. Contemporary choral SATB a cappella. A4, 12 pages (including covers). Published by Shrub Creative. Item number 2023-01. ISMN 9790900969910.

A narrative work for intermediate unaccompanied mixed choirs (SATB divisi, a cappella), setting Lewis Carroll’s epic adventure poem ‘Jabberwocky’.

Score includes piano reduction for rehearsal, and pronunciation guide.

In Lewis Carroll’s ‘Jabberwocky’, published in his 1871 novel Through the Looking-Glass, a “beamish boy” sets out on an adventure through a mysterious land populated by fantastical creatures, vanquishes a fearsome beast and returns triumphantly home. Central to the enduring appeal of the poem is Carroll’s linguistic creativity.

There are at least 16 other choral settings of ‘Jabberwocky’, so why choose this one? Like most, Kirsten Duncan’s composition seeks to express the meanings of the words and actions in the text through musical ideas. Unlike most, this piece is composed for intermediate to advanced mixed adult choirs (SATB divisi) without any instrumental accompaniment, and combines the tradition of Anglican chant (evident in the final stanza) with a mood of fireside storytelling for a ripping musical yarn of high adventure.

Kirsten Duncan has had a lifelong passion for choral singing. Now based in Canberra, Australia, she has performed with Gaudeamus (Judith Clingan), Hamburg International School (ISH) Singers, the choirs of Christ Church St Laurence Sydney (Dr Neil McEwan), The Resonants (Helen Swan) and others. Kirsten started composing choral music in 2015, contributing to the musical community that has been a stabilising thread throughout her life. She especially thanks Helen Swan and The Resonants for giving voice to this composition.

Asleep in a Blanket Spun of Energy for a cappella mixed chorus evokes vivid imagery of Margaret Noodin’s poem We Are Returning Always. Honoring the composer’s Ojibwe ancestors, the piece sets all of the English text and a few key words of the Anishinaabemowin text from the bilingual poem that beautifully captures a glimpse into the natural and celestial wonders of the Ojibwe world. Laced with ethereal special effects, the music reflects a taste of the syncopated embellished singing, pentatonic melodies, steady drumbeat characteristic of Ojibwe music.

This version includes an IPA pronunciation guide for the Anishinaabe words.

Your choir will enjoy singing this exuberant setting of the Magnificat (Song of Mary) for Mixed Choir (SATBdiv). It is the first of Two Canticles from the Christmas Story. The other motet in this set is a setting of the Nunc dimittis (Song of Simeon). Using the standard ICET English texts, both motets serve many liturgical functions but of course may be sung at other times as well. If performed in a concert, these motets may be performed individually or as a set since both are in F major. The Magnificat ends on the Dominant (C major) which nicely sets up the beginning of the Nunc dimittis. For more information and music, visit www.jubalslyre.com/music.
