Choral Choir,Choral (SATB divisi) - Level 2 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1309630

Composed by Jonathan Bush. Arranged by Matthew Udland. A Cappella,Barbershop,Children,Comedy,Film/TV. 2 pages. Midwest A Cappella #898797. Published by Midwest A Cappella (A0.1309630).

I know what you are thinking... I need a super fun 30-second song to toss at my high school a cappella group or small ensemble that they can learn in a class period. LOOK NO FURTHER :)

There is a baritone line written in if you have an abundance of basses, but if you don't just cut out the bari. Similarly, you don't NEED a vocal percussionist but I've separated the sounds out into two lines if you've got a young couple of beatboxers who want to practice a simple rhythmic pattern.

Your audience will thank you :)... bonus points if you have your students play Musical Statues while singing!

Composed by Kevin G. Pace (ASCAP), Kathryn W. Hales. Christian,Christmas,Praise & Worship,Religious,Sacred. 3 pages. Kevin G. Pace #1010232. Published by Kevin G. Pace (A0.1429535).

A notable, sacred Christmas hymn with music by Kevin G. Pace and text by Kathryn W. Hales.

Text:
The sounds of that holy, sacred night
Began with moans of pain,
Mary cried out as all mothers do,
From the straw where she had lain.
She was young, but knew God’s will:
Become the mother of His Son,
He came to earth as all men do,
Born to be The Anointed One.

Another sound broke through the night,
A whimper from a newborn babe,
In Bethlehem so long ago,
Where in a manger He was laid.
He cried as all babies do,
But cradled in His mother’s care,
He left heaven’s glory to reside,
In a world of dark despair.

Songs rang out that joyous night,
As angels came down to Judah’s hills,
And choirs proclaimed the wondrous birth,
And the heavens their voices filled.
“Peace on earth, good will to men,”
Were the glad tidings of great news.
The Word of God manifest in flesh,
Would proclaim His gospel’s truths.

Then Mary’s song that holy night,
Became a lullaby of joy,
As she gazed with wonderment
At this child, her precious baby boy,
Hers to hold but for a time,
Soon His Father’s work to do,
On earth becoming Savior Lord,
To live and die for me and you.

Chorus:
Sounds of that sacred night
Heard by so very few,
Now ring forth from land to land,
Announcing again the joyous news.
The sounds and songs that holy night,
We celebrate at Christmas time,
The song of love that Christ was born,
Song of love, O Love Divine!

By Christopher Alexander. By Christopher Alexander and Safirah Ladore. A Cappella,Contest,Festival,Multicultural,World. 24 pages. Christopher Alexander #1085666. Published by Christopher Alexander (A0.1510472).

This is the first movement from the extended choral work Rising from the Ashes: Stories of Lahaina.

Depicting the devastation and horror incurred in the Maui wildfires of August 2023, the choir and drums establish a powerful and unrelenting rhythmic drive without slowing down.  The text of the melody gets further illustrated with texture painting (wind blowing) and chord clusters (sirens), culminating in the cacophony of all these sounds along with a small ensemble from the choir making shouts and shrieks. As the music fades away, so does the hope of the Lahaina residents as their homeland is burned away forever.

Full score and other movements (Forever Anew, Finding Strength in Shadows, Kama'aina) also available for purchase.

SKU: A0.835786

Composed by Paul Burnell. Contemporary. Octavo. 124 pages. Paul Burnell #3405305. Published by Paul Burnell (A0.835786).

Composed 2007, duration 8:30 approx.

The music and text of ‘The Sense of a Place Will Remain’ was inspired by pictures of an early carved stone cross and a tenth-century Viking burial stone on the island of Inchcolm in Scotland.

First performed by Inchcolm New Music Ensemble 29 June 2007, conductor Steve King.

Instrumentation is flexible; the following is a guide:

Part 1 - Violin 1, flute 1 (doubling piccolo if possible) oboe 1,

Part 2 - Violin 2, flute 2, oboe 2 (doubling tenor recorder if possible), clarinet 1, trumpet

Part 3 - Viola, clarinet 2, horn in F, Eb horn (2 players doubling harmonicas in C)

Part 4 - Cello, bassoon

Part 5 - Double bass, bass guitar (or Cello 2 - playing as if usual bass clef, but an octave lower where possible)

SATB voices (doubling metal spoons and pitch pipes)

Optional:

Percussion (one player) - claves, glockenspiel (could be a child’s toy instrument such as an ‘Angel’ glockenspiel), mark tree, spring drum (thunder shaker), frame drum, musical jewelry box (or similar clockwork device).Should a glockenspiel not be available, a special part has been created which arranges the glockenspiel for two flutes, together with the other percussion music. This special part is not visible in the score.

Keyboard instrument with sustaining capability - piano sound

Instructions:

Wind players can breathe ad lib. during any very long notes. From letter D onwards non-wind players who are not soloists blow across the top of small bottles. The pitches produced are not specified, but they should not be shrill. A soft breathy tone is preferred.

About half of the voices play pairs of metal spoons (share printed part between two singers and anyone not holding the music holds metal spoons). Hold the spoons one in each hand, and strike the larger ends together. Spoons are struck together where shown with a large patterned note head. Strike rapidly where a tremolo sign is given.

Four singers play pitch tuning pipes: 1 Soprano and 1 Alto play viola/cello pitch tuning pipes, 1 Tenor and 1 Bass play violin pitch tuning pipes

Pitch pipe playing is indicated with square note heads - player should breathe ad lib. during very long notes. Where there are very long sung notes, the singers may stagger breathing ad lib. Spoken sounds are indicated with x note heads and with the text in italics.

There are many pauses. These can be of varying duration, but on the whole they should not hold up the momentum of the piece, but be of sufficient duration to establish the solo and pitch pipe notes.

Text:

Carve stone

Strike out

Stay at home

Or go far alone.

Blocks of stone are laid

Emblazoned with the signs of great deeds

That signify our memory,

Mem’ries of who we are.

Careful carvings erode through time,

Chiseled grooves smooth away.

Families, they scatter and fade

As generations age

Descendants pass on memory time.

Sense of our allegiance shifts when major faults are found,

Feelings of belonging fall on shaky ground,

But the sense of a place will remain.

Composed by Stanley M Hoffman. Classical,Contemporary. Octavo. 32 pages. Stanleymhoffman.com #678653. Published by stanleymhoffman.com (A0.1074352).

PROGRAM NOTES As of the present writing, this choral tone poem had been gestating for over thirty years, and the concept and harmonies for it for over forty years. In the 1980s I began to work with the latter two in my brief orchestral piece Little Sea Nocturne. When reading the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849), I am most struck by how musical they are. When recited aloud they exhibit their own rhythmic sense. I was eager to incorporate those rhythms into my music. I had long been familiar with his poem The City In the Sea and began to sketch choral passages for the present choral tone poem in the 1990s. It took me until 2022 to complete it because I required many more years of experience at my craft to do so to lead into out of the choruses. In 2012 I completed a seven-minute unaccompanied version of the choruses with music unique to and unifying it simply called The City In the Sea. In composing The City In the Sea - Choral Tone Poem, my goal was to write a piece that, while steeped in tradition, sounds unlike anything in the literature that had come before it. The result is an original hybrid work that successfully and memorably combines salient aspects of the tonal, atonal, and modal musical languages into an organic whole. George Perle coined the term “twelve-tone tonality†to describe the music of Alban Berg and composers influenced by him such as Luigi Dallapiccola. The last title of which I am aware that accomplishes anything remotely related to what I am trying to accomplish musically in this choral tone poem is the piece Paradiso Choruses by Donald Martino (1974). However, I take twelve-tone tonality in entirely other directions in my work. That the duration of The City In the Sea - Choral Tone Poem came out to be thirteen minutes seems appropriate for piece about a sunken city. Rather than write program notes that narrate how the music unfolds I will simply shout out the most memorable aspects of what careful listeners will discern: a recurring heartbeat motif; shifting polychordal harmonies; echo technique; rhythmic diminutions and augmentations; an a cappella chorus featuring those harmonies with a surprisingly memorable recuring theme on top; sensuous flute duets; string section underpinnings by way of either sustained passages or wave-like gestures; tritone-related melodies, harmonies, and tone centers; several strategically placed grand pauses; tritone-related modal-sounding passages; melodic and chord clusters, especially the two climactic ones. INSTRUMENTATION 2 Flutes (2. doubles on Piccolo) 2 Oboes (2. doubles on English Horn) 2 Bb Clarinets 2 Bassoons 2 F Horns 2 C Trumpets 2 Trombones Tuba Timpani Percussion (Gong, Bass Drum, Chimes, Glockenspiel) Harp Strings DURATION 13:00 Stanley M. Reflections on the Eve of Christmas. Composed by Gilbert M. Martin. Choral, cantatas. Advent, Christmas, Sacred. Choral score. Sacred Music Press #65/1966S. Published by Sacred Music Press (LO.65-1966S).

UPC: 000308098303.

The birth of the Holy Child is gently recalled in this serene and contemplative mini-cantata. This composer's familiar hallmarks of colorful organ sounds and expressive choral writing shine throughout this luminous work. An original, flowing setting of Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus leads off the Bethlehem journey, followed by the well-known Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming. The very first awe-filled visitors are in attendance with While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks, and all adore the new-born King with a sumptuous choral arrangement of Away in a Manger, weaving both familiar melodies together in simple tranquility. A sensitive setting of the Christina Rossetti poem, Love Came Down at Christmas brings the entire work together, quietly heralding Jesus' peaceful arrival on earth. The narrator comments throughout with the familiar Christmas story from St. Luke. You will find this work to be suitable for the Sundays before Christmas, on Christmas Day, and especially, on Christmas Eve.

Composed by Candace R. Lambert. Christian. Octavo. 19 pages. Candace R. Lambert #3452119. Published by Candace R. Lambert (A0.1028226).

Appropriate for church services, college, or professional groups.
Context: The piece receives its title from my little sister's nickname. Dia was born 10 weeks early and weighed less than 3 pounds. The doctors told us that she would not live. My father began to pray and certain scriptures came to his mind. Soon, he and my mother began to remind each other of these scriptures. Dia ended up making it. I tell her God must have something planned for her if she survived such a rough start.
Performance: The piece opens with a joyful piano solo followed by the higher voices' entrance. These are the mothers exclaiming their joy for the new coming baby. The lower voices then make their statement in their own melody. They are the fathers expressing the excitement of the chlid's birth. The piano takes a turn into the minor key. A soloist represents the doctor delivering the bad news as the rest of the choir makes waiting room sounds. Have people texting or talking on the phone, flipping through magazines, or rustling papers. The alto soloist then repeats the doctor's message. The higher voices began to weep and cry as the father begins to pray. The 3 basses (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) answer in scripture. The father begins to recite the scripture with God and soon the rest of the choir joins. The key modulates to the Major 3rd as the piano solo returns to represent the child living.

This is my arrangement of The Sound Of Silence for SSAATB choir, originally composed by Paul Simon. My arrangement is influenced by Disturbed's rendition of the classic hit, which premiered in 2015. It features instrumental parts for timpani and tubular bells. Endorsed by Paul Simon, Disturbed's version of The Sound Of Silence is powerful, haunting, and full of emotion. The purpose of my arrangement is to capture the sounds produced by Disturbed and emulate them through a higher-level high school or college choir.

This delightful intermediate-level nature-themed piece is fun to sing and put together with organ and nature soundtrack. Your audience will chuckle and applaud this whimsical work!

For the Toad on the Kitchen Step (2021) by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP) sets the poem For the Toad on the Kitchen Step by Oregon's 2018-2020 Poet Laureate and Lewis & Clark College Associate Professor Kim Stafford (ASCAP) for SATB mixed chorus, organ, and nature soundtrack. Commissioned by Inversion Ensemble, it contrasts both the whimsical levity of the poem with the darker implications of humans’ impact on toads and their habitats. Colorful choral harmonies, grand organ gestures, delicate vocal effects, and the nature soundtrack create a soundscape that draws the audience into the toad’s world view. The nature soundtrack was recorded by Adrienne Inglis in June 2021 on Cow Creek Road, western Travis County, Texas (https://youtu.be/CWXMUt6RyNM).

Text : An Extinction by Kim Stafford (https://www.kimstaffordpoet.com)

The poem “An Extinction†© 2022 Kim Stafford is unpublished and used with permission.

An Extinction by Kim Stafford
Not just the creature gone, not just the tattered feathers, dry leaf pressed thin.
Not just the rendering from memory, not just the lost-list growing longer, a shape and hue from the field guide fled,
not just a name that meant a life, a syllable that once was teeming glory, one bright flurry shimmering the sun.
No. No. No. It’s one name gone from our happiness,
one breath lost from our respiration,
one thread frayed from our salvation,
one plank gone from the ark that carried us.
Be the songbird now and testify.
Be the butterfly hinge of gold.
Be the one with open hands these wonders to behold.
Don’t let them fly.
Be the songbird now and testify.

Program note — Commissioned by Inversion Ensemble for its February 2023 Planet Home concert, Extinction sets the poem “An Extinction†(2022) by Kim Stafford for SATB mixed chorus. The three stanzas of the poem get distinct musical treatment: the first some text-painting and dissonance, the second rhythmic parts underpinning canonic melodic lines, the third a rich chorale. During my work on this piece, I happened to be traveling by train. The pitches of the train whistle snuck their way into the score as a dissonant chord. A nature soundscape may sometimes accompany this piece, although the tongue click sounds create a bit of their own aural ecosystem. Drawing attention to the unfolding catastrophe of mass extinction, Extinction hopes to inspire humans to action to prevent further loss of species biodiversity.

Composed by Phillips Brooks and Lewis H Redner. Arranged by Connie Boss. Christian,Christmas,Holiday. 10 pages. Connie Boss #907165. Published by Connie Boss (A0.1318498).

This version has an optional beginning. I have choir humming for the first three measure. There is a soloist that starts singing after that. The optional part is to not play the piano until half way through the verse. There is accompaniment if you prefer. You can hear on the mp3 how it sounds being a cappella until then. It is for SATB voices. I have also added additions to each verse that is different than the original with new lyrics and music. It adds a little bit to this iconic song. Lyrics below:
O little town of Bethlehem
How still we see Thee lie
Above Thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by

Yet in thy dark streets shineth
The everlasting light
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in Thee tonight

Shepherds watching o’re their flocks

Saw a light star down

Then they noticed that it’s light

Lit up a little town

For Christ is born of Mary
And, gathered all above
While mortals sleep, the angels keep
Their watch of wondering love

O morning stars, together
Proclaim the Holy birth
And praises sing to God the King
And peace to men on earth

Shepherds followed the bright star

And they were so amazed

People gathered all around

Singing hymns of praise

O Holy Child of Bethlehem
Descend to us, we pray
Cast out our sin and enter in
Be born for us today

We hear the Christmas angels
The great glad tidings tell
O come to us, abide with us
Our Lord Emmanuel

In a stable was a child

Born for all to see

His mother always by His side

The newborn Prince of peace

O little town of Bethlehem
How still we see Thee lie
Above Thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by.

Composed by the Canadian Celtic singer Loreena McKennitt, Mummers' Dance has its roots in a centuries old tradition in which a roving band of costumed actors travels and puts on performances for people throughout the land. McKennitt's lyrics speak of the beautiful natural settings in which these mummers would live and work, and the musical landscape is matched perfectly in this arrangement, featuring both sustained and open sounds and exotic melismatic figures that would normally be played by period instruments. This arrangement features a break-out treble-clef soloist, with some modern reharmonization included to employ the vocal jazz aesthetic, and a polyphonic, wordless development section increases the energy of the piece before it winds down at the end, as if the mummers have moved on to travel to the next village.
