Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.779348

Composed by John Stafford Smith. Arranged by Shelton Ridge Love. Folk,Holiday,Patriotic. Octavo. 14 pages. Shelton Ridge Love #3096887. Published by Shelton Ridge Love (A0.779348).

Arranged for SATB choir with piano duet (one piano, four hand) accompaniment, this majestic arrangement of The Star-Spangled Banner is perfect for every American patriotic concert or celebration. After a fanfare opening, the audience is invited to participate in the pledge to the flag and the first stanza. The choir then sings the lesser-known second stanza, concluding with a triumphant coda.

At this time, the companion recording includes only digitized voices, so the lyrics for the entire arrangement are included below. (Lyrics by Francis Scott Key)

America! America!
God shed his grace on thee!

O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

O thus be it ever when free men shall stand
Between their loved homes and the war's desolation!
Blest with vict'ry and peace, may the head'n-rescued land
Praise the pow'r that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: In God is our trust!
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Ah! America!

Composed by John Stafford Smith. Arranged by Thomas Coker. Folk,Patriotic. Octavo. 4 pages. Thomas Rembert Coker Jr #3503513. Published by Thomas Rembert Coker Jr (A0.933611).

In 2009 when Sanctuary Choir of South Main Baptist Church in Houston where I served as Music Minister was scheduled to sing the National Anthem for the Houston Astros baseball game, I carefully examined the several arrangements in our library and other resources. Finding nothing which met the simple, straight-forward criteria I was searching for, we created this simple arrangement. Since its addition to the music library it has proven very useful on numerous occasions for a variety of groups.

About the National Anthem:

The lyrics for The Star-Spangled Banner were written on September 14, 1814 from a British ship in the Baltimore Harbor where attorney Francis Scott Key had waited anxiously through the night as the twenty-five hour bombing of Ft. McHenry progressed. He had been sent to negotiate the release of an American civilian and then was held on board the ship.  At the dawn’s early light when the flag could still be seen indicating the British had not taken the fort, he jotted down this poem which on March 3, 1931 finally became the National Anthem of the United States.

Interestingly, it was Robert Ripley who in November of 1929 drew a panel in his syndicated cartoon, Ripley’s Believe It or Not stating Believe It or Not, America has no national anthem. With the encouragement of John Philip Sousa, President Herbert Hoover signed into law the adoption of The Star-Spangled Banner to rectify this situation.

According to the Smithsonian, the melody, written by John Stafford Smith, was originally titled Anacreon in Heaven. Anacreon was an ancient Greek poet known for his love of wine and love. The song had become the constitutional song of a London gentlemen’s club called the Anacreontic Society. Could this explain the wide range of the melody? By utilizing this tune to the moving text, this once merry drinking song took on a bold new and powerful meaning.

Arranged by Eric Hagmann. A Cappella,Holiday,Instructional,Patriotic,Standards. Octavo. 2 pages. Eric Hagmann #4361093. Published by Eric Hagmann (A0.796821).

A staple at sporting events, 4th of July outings, school assemblies, and more, The Star-Spangled Banner is an important tradition in American culture.

This SATB a cappella arrangement adds a rich, new layer of harmony to the common melody that we've all come to know.  Standard progressions are given a fresh approach with chords smoothly moving from one to the other in a manner influenced by changes found directly in jazz theory. A pinch of syncopation, without overdoing it, adds new bounce to lines that were once stiff and rigid.

If your ensemble is looking for a version of the US National Anthem that has some flavor without straying too far from the original form, this arrangement is for you!  .

Composed by John Stafford Smith. Arranged by Anthony Giamanco. A Cappella,Concert,Holiday,Patriotic. Octavo. 5 pages. Whole Tone Press #3433717. Published by Whole Tone Press (A0.773663).

This festival arrangement of The Star-Spangled Banner is scored for SATB choir (divisi) a cappella. The lush choral writing breathes new life into this old gem, and offers some unexpected harmonies. The piece begins in the key of B major. At measure 25, it modulates to G major, quite by surprise, and becomes more broad, returning to B major for the rousing finale. In addition to 4th of July celebrations, this work can be programmed as an opening or closing number on any spring concert. Ideal for community and college choirs!

There are countless arrangements of The Star-Spangled Banner, and most of them sound pretty similar.  I decided to take the simple melody and harmonize it in the most unique way I could.  The piece is filled with lots of interesting contemporary-style harmonies but is still easily recognizable as the famous American National Anthem (and even follows all the rules of four-part writing!).
