Verse 4 uses a lot of chromatic harmony as death is foreshadowed, and the following chorus is sung by altos with a soprano descant, before the final verse, Glorious now behold him arise leads up to a chorus where altos sing the melody, tenors a countermelody, and the sopranos and basses sing alleluias over and under them (heaven sings alleluia, alleluia the earth replies!) Ranges: sopranos D4-G5, altos B3-D5, tenors E3-A4 (only three brief A4s which can be sung in falsetto), basses G2-D4.

The music, in canon form, is descriptive of a hangover, and its effect suggests that the alcohol spirit is also a mocking spirit in the ghostly sense of the word. Starting with bars of 11 beats might raise a few eyebrows. However, this short setting of anonymous C15th words (as with many of my pieces) is intended to support the text, rather than be a nice tune with words shoehorned in.  What turns out to be a flowing opening line for the Sopranos (/ solo) leads into a simple refrain. Altos join for the second verse, still in unison, with a slightly elaborated 2-part refrain including duplets against 3/4. So on with the Tenors added in verse three and the Basses in verse four.  By verse five, some harmony is forthcoming, as is a brief division for the Sops. Although the nominal key rests in C minor and the refrains so far have resolved on a G major chord, the final chorus ends on a triumphant 8-part C major chord.A definite showpiece for an (at least) reasonably competent choir.

The first section is in English and the second in Hebrew, while the third section has the two parts singing simultaneously. At the end, the descant is added and there is a coda of a repetition of the final phrase. The attached recording is of woodwinds playing the round, and does not have the coda that the score has.

This suite of three songs is appropriate for use in a Christian or Jewish religious service or a secular concert. It includes a short audience participation possibility at the end of the last song. All are written for flute, piano, ethnic drum, SATB plus a high soprano part that can be a soloist. The drum part is written out, but could be improvised. The first song, Hear My Call, is short (1:49) and could be used as a call to worship in a religious service. The second song, God Created Me, (4:36) is an anthem of praise using the wonderful words of the creation of Wisdom in Proverbs 8:22-36 with a descant of the creation story in the book of Ben Sira 24:3, found in the Apocrypha. The tenors and basses sing the comparison of Wisdom with the trees of Israel, also found in Ben Sira, all in praise of Wisdom. Nessun dorma (None shall sleep) is an aria from the final act of Giacomo Puccini's opera Turandot and is one of the best-known arias in all of  opera. Although Nessun dorma has long been a staple of operatic recitals, Luciano Pavarotti popularized the piece well beyond the world  of opera with his many recordings and live performances. Nessun  dorma became his signature aria. Nessun dorma also appeared on the best-selling classical album of all time, The  Three Tenors in Concert. However, our favorite  version will always be the soul-infused rendition by Aretha  Franklin during the 1998 Grammy  Awards, in which she sang in place of Pavarotti when he was unable to perform due to throat problems. Where Is JesusInspiration January 1st, 2021 was the start of my official retirement from a wonderful company that I had been employed at for 40+ years, Cirtronics Corporation. Where Is Jesus was my first retirement music so to speak. A 2 measure musical idea came to me in early January. Several weeks later I had the overall structure completed and started inputting the score into my music program. At this point I had no lyrical ideas, however with Easter approaching it occurred to me that the musics dramatic content leaned heavily towards Good Friday, in spirit. As I pondered that, I couldn't help but wonder what the disciples thought when Jesus was taken. Certainly they would question where he was, question what had happened. Thus was born Where is Jesus with the lyrical content asking and then answering. The Music The music is comprised of an A section which begins with the Tenors and Altos singing Where Is Jesus. The choir then responds (in chronological order, as recorded in the Gospels ) with lyrics that describe the brutality that Jesus endured. Here the weight of what has occurred is felt with the lyrics and music evoking great emotion. The B section follows; a retrospective look back sung by the soloist, stating that all had transpired as foretold, or as stated, by Jesus and the prophets. A C section is then introduced which contains the hope then, and the crux now, of our faith deaths chain cannot have its reign, he will rise, he will rise. After a short piano interlude we are returned to the A section, now modulated to a higher key; here the most emotional section of the music is felt with the raw truth of what has happened. He is nailed to the cross, he has died, we are lost. The piece then ends as it started Where Is Jesus, to be answered three days later.
