The Door weaves a story of someone who feels stuck - they'd like to make a change in their life but it's easier to stay inside their comfort zone, far away from the fear monster that guards the door. Eventually they decide to stand and go through the door, but they find themselves unable to vanquish the fear monster. They realize that the only way through is by accepting their fear! The moral of the story is that true courage isn't the absence of fear - it's being scared out of your mind and making the tough decision anyway. I wrote this piece in collaboration with the Wentzville Liberty Chamber Choir - the students came up with the idea for the piece and contributed lyric and musical ideas. They wanted a roller coaster of a piece, and I did my best to deliver.

The Betrayal is written for choir (soprano, alto, tenor, bass). 
It is a religious piece based on the passion of Christ. It has 
aspects of imitation, with a lot of independence in the parts. 
The vocal parts represent the voice of Jesus, the voices of those 
who crucified him, a narrator, and also briefly the voice of Peter, 
Jesus' disciple. The bass primarily sings the role of the people who 
called for his death, but as the piece continues others join in this 
role. I wrote some of the lyrics and also pulled some verses in from 
the Bible. I think this would be a great piece for Holy Week, perhaps 
on Good Friday or Maundy Thursday. the piece captures some of the intense 
emotions involved in the crucifixion and would make a great addition to 
Lenten music in the church.

Tribute to the Trail of Tears is an original SATB choir song commemorating my Choctaw heritage. When I wrote this song, I wanted to look at the Trail of Tears from the Choctaws' eyes. I did this by emphasizing the contrast between their anger with the shouting taken from a Choctaw war chant and hope with a Choctaw Sun Prayer (the sun is an important figure of hope in Choctaw spirituality), their English traditions forced upon them and their true Choctaw nature, and the betrayal of a government that was supposed to protect them. This song is designed to be slow and relaxed (~70bpm for the first part and ~85bpm for the piu mosso), with the bends representing relaxed glissandos in the voice. The last three chords are meant to be sensitive and should be taken very slowly. Keep in mind that this piece should not only be meaningful but convey the emotions to spread the Native awareness that is so direly needed in America.

The text for I'll See You in the Morning was taken from a children's book of the same name. The book, by Mike Jolley, evokes a calm, reassuring atmosphere with its warm illustrations of the moon and stars, snuggling animals, and sleeping children. I wanted to capture the same aura through the use of lush, comforting harmonies and a relaxed tempo. I also wanted to highlight the sense of deep love that a parent feels for a child, as this text does. The mother of a two-year-old myself, these feelings are somewhat self-referential.

There is a profound simplicity to this quote by Rabindranath Tagore that connected with me immediately and left no doubt in my mind that I wanted to set it. In reality, it practically set itself. The lilting rhythm of Tagore's words and their joyful message suggest a cadence that is both animated and graceful and an interpretation that is both gregarious and intimate. My role was to step aside and let the words speak for themselves. My hope is that the resulting music mirrors the engaging spirit of Tagore's text.–Craig Carnahan

This fun little love song comes from Vampire Weekend's fourth album, Father of the Bride, released in early 2019. The original is a duet featuring the female vocals of Danielle Haim.
Writer, Ezra Koenig has said of the song I always wanted to do a song that was insanely simple, that was just listing things that go together... It's probably the most wholesome Vampire Weekend song.

Although the simplicity of the original song remains, there are some challenging arpeggio's and runs for soprano and alto parts in the latter half of the piece.

This version is suitable for weddings and pop or community choir performances.

A gentle mountain snowfall…an icy midnight sojourn…the simple, quiet joy of first snow…

I found the perfect voice for the feelings and scenes of winter I wanted to convey in the tiny verses known as haiku.  I’ve always loved haiku. I admire the expressive power that the skilled poet can wring out of such bare economic means.  A scene, painted so poignantly, so vividly—an essence, a sigh, a quick, visceral sketch to capture the deceptively-simple drama of nature revealing itself.  They are epigrams of life. I hope these little morsels of music and words fill you with the essence of the winter season and that I’ve been able to impart some of the enthusiasm and admiration I feel for this wonderful aspect of Japanese culture.

Keep in mind these notes are merely suggestions. I found having talked to a music teacher or two, some appreciate the guidance these notes/suggestions provide. S-SB (III) sounds more difficult than it actually is. 

I wanted the piece to be interesting but not so far outside as to wake up Miles Davis. I think you will find the dissonance and syncopation interesting without upsetting. It is my favorite of the five arragements I have created. It does go to 3/4 for a couple of measures but that just wakes people up. If you have an excellent high school choir, you'll have no problem with this one. (If it's too difficult, may I suggest my arrangement, Star-Spangled Banner (I) available through UNCJazzPress.com).

This has long been one of my absolute favorite carols. I fell in love with it while singing with the Dickens Carolers of Seattle. This along with countless other caroling classics have such a wonderful sense of harmonic movement that support lovely melodies. I wanted to lean into the melodic and allow rich harmony to unfold. 

This arrangement is quite challenging, with plenty of intricate harmonies and sonorities and a diverse array of stylistic influences. It will take an intermediate to advanced choir to pull it off. Range is not too challenging, with the lowest bass note an F2 and the highest soprano note is an F5. 

This is a blissful and serene arrangement with some spicy moments to keep things interesting. Perfect for you choir's holiday showcase!
