♫ Isaiah 8 ends and Isaiah 9 begins with the brutal Assyrian invasion and deportation of the northern 10 tribes of Israel (586 BC). Assyria was so effective in disrupting the nation, that we call the 10 northern tribes the “lost tribes of Israel.� God sent many prophets to warn the people that they were failing to keep their covenant with God and that judgment day was coming for the nation.

♫ The tribes of Zebulun and Naphtali were located near the Sea of Galilee. They, like all the Northern people, would curse God on the day of darkness as they were killed or deported.

♫ But Isaiah sees ahead to a time when Zebulun and Naphtali will be overcome with light and joy. “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light.� This prophecy was fulfilled as Jesus healed and taught in the cities of ancient Zebulun and Naphtali.

Having completed and published here a 3-part setting of Arabia's Magi sought Him and Ubi est, I came back to the computer a few months later to be reminded that I had started the project with a 4-part (SATB) setting of Ubi est?  I therefore reverse-engineered an SATB setting of Arabia's Magi to complete this short Epiphany set using my original English words for the first anthem and the Latin words of Matthew's Gospel (Ch.2, v2) for the second. Lasting around a couple of minute or so altogether, and with nothing to trap the unwary singer, these are ideal either in a Lessons and Carols service (which extends the narrative to include the Magi), as dedicated Epiphany diptych, or for use in a concert.  N.B. pages 2 & 3 are sample pages only - to save paper, please print just pages (1? &) 4-7.

♫ On the night of His arrest, Jesus told the disciples that He was going away, leaving them, and they could not follow Him. 

♫ He further explained that they knew the road He was taking. Philip asked His destination so he could figure out the route. 

♫ But His claim “I Am the Road, the Truth, and the Life� was not speaking of a destination with latitude and longitude coordinates. Jesus is plainly claiming that He alone is the only path to God, the path to truth, and the path to eternal life.

♫ “I Am the Road� has a dual listing. It is also used as a worship song.

Rev. Richard (Dick) Neiderhiser composed this basic tune years ago as a setting for an Advent hymn text. With his permission I later arranged the tune as a piano solo, adding a John Field theme as the basis for the introduction. Years later, after being stricken with cancer, Dick wrote this text to fit the piano arrangement. I then arranged the piece for SATB choir (opt. mixed quartet), and added a light orchestration. Sadly we had to say goodbye to Dick in 2022 as he made the crossing that he had so eloquently anticipated in this text.

The demo mp3 is computer-generated, and thus lacks some of the nuance which you would–of course–include in live performance!

I will post the orchestration (or String Quartet and Flute or Oboe) separately.

He will actually shun popularity. His actions will be characterized by gentleness and compassion for the needy. When many of the leadership of Jesus’ day were obsessed with power and popularity and were often willing to sacrifice the real needs of people to further their agenda, Messiah will have a totally different agenda.

♫ The purpose of this collection is to look closely at the I Am’s of the Gospel of John. The individual titles have been composed over many years in various ensemble types. The songs have been added to, reworked, expanded, and made consistent in this publication for SATB choir with piano. A narration has been added to unify the themes of the songs. Of course, each of these songs can be performed separately as stand-alone choral works.
♫ This song is not based on an “I Am� statement but refers to Apostle John’s opening portrait of Christ.
♫ These claims of Jesus Christ are very much like a series of portraits of a person. Instead of calling “The Claims of the Son� a cantata, the composer chose the term “polyptych� [pu LIP tich]. A polyptych is a work of art consisting of 4 or more pieces or panels, that together create a single presentation. [A diptych is divided into 2 sections, a triptych into 3 sections etc.]

♫ This prophecy alludes to Rachel’s death near Bethlehem. Rachel dies in bitterness. Jeremiah prophecies the grief of the mothers of Jerusalem will experience at the sack of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar and personifies it as Rachel weeping. A third use of the metaphor is the mothers whose babies are destroyed at Herod the Great’s command. 
♫ Coventry Carol is 1 of 3 songs belonging to Pageant of the Shearmen and Tailors, a Coventry Mystery play of the nativity. The only surviving copy of the play (and the song) is dated 1534. The text of Coventry Carol expresses horror of the murder of the innocents by Herod.
♫ To balance the darkness and grief of the music, the composer has concluded the song with a reminder of how God intervened to protect His Son and the redemption of mankind.
♫ Hope of the World is made of 2 suites of songs that present messianic prophecies from the Old Testament that are referenced in the New Testament. The first 8 songs center on the birth of Christ, the last 9, Christ’s life and passion.

These short Buddhist anthems (ranging from about 45 seconds to 1 1/2 minutes duration) are choral settings of poems (wasan) by the great Jodo Shinshu Buddhist luminary, Shinran Shonin (Japan, 1173-1262). Each one celebrates the aspects of the miraculous saving Light of the Buddhist Savior, Amida Buddha. The MP3 Audio Clip is a computer-generated soundfile of the concluding anthem (no. 13). Total duration of the series, about 14 minutes. The style of the music is completely tonal with conventional rhythms, suitable for performance by amateur groups or professional choirs alike.

There was no king of Judah in Zechariah’s day. The former exiles who had returned to Judah were under the authority of the Persians. Any king would have to be authorized by the higher secular authority. But Zechariah foresees a king who will enter Jerusalem, riding on a donkey. ♫ The choice of the animal here is important. The donkey is the beast of burden of the common man. (Analogous to an economic or dilapidated automobile.) Horses were primarily used by soldiers; something like a victor riding into town in a tank. Mules (Jewish law forbade the breeding of hybrid animals) were the choice of the wealthy. In Judea, they were evidently imported. David had Solomon ride into Jerusalem on his mule (something like a sports car.) But Zechariah sees Messiah will presenting Himself as king riding the transportation of the common person. On Psalm Sunday, about a week before Jesus’ death, the crowds quoted Zechariah 9 and Psalm 118 as Jesus offered Himself to the nation as king. ♫ Hope of the World is made of 2 suites of songs that present messianic prophecies from the Old Testament that are referenced in the New Testament. ♫ The Judah of Zechariah was marred by exiles who struggled greatly to obey God’s law. Ezra, Nehemiah, Haggai and Malachi contain many passages that point out the sin of the people. Joshua, the current high priest, is pictured in one of Zechariah’s visions as wearing filthy apparel, desperately needing cleansing. Sheep in Bible times are grown more for their wool and milk, not so much for the slaughterhouse. Zechariah likens the leadership of Judah to shepherds and flock owners who are primarily concerned with selling meat. But there is a good shepherd who intervenes to lead the flock. He is mistreated by the owners and the shepherds and paid the price of a slave for his efforts. The good shepherd, casts the price on the floor for the potter.

♫ Zechariah is looking ahead to a time when the religious leaders of Judah were short on compassion and the needs of people. Jesus called Himself the Good Shepherd. We see several parallel’s here in John 10. He called the religious leaders of His day, thieves and robbers, and predators. Judas Iscariot was paid the price of a slave to betray Jesus, which he threw to the ground, but was scooped to purchase a Potter’s Field!

In May 3, 2014, on my birthday, I composed a Mother's Day Song. But, it is only with hand-written music sheet. Now, I completed the electronic music sheet, with 10 instruments, that can sing the song in computer. I further made a short video with English and Chinese lyrics for Karaoke and issued on April 21, 2021. The current version of the music sheet has added cannon voices in the second singing, which is a little different from the MTV.

♫ “You Are� is based on several claims of Christ. The phrase “You are the Love� is implied from what the New Testament tells us about Jesus. This song was written to remind us that the claims of Jesus do not benefit us unless we actively apply them in our lives and make our daily decisions in their light. The “I Am’s� present Christ’s claims. “You Are� is our response back to Him.
