During the late spring of 2017, I began composing a new choral piece based on the 1 Timothy 3:16 text. I was studying Paul's first letter to Timothy at the time when this particular passage jumped out at me. Not only was it an efficient summary of the Gospel message, but it was also a textual grouping, or form, such as might be found in a traditional hymn. What I was reading were indeed lyrics to an actual 1st Century Hymn to Christ, the music of which has since been lost. I entitled my piece, Great is the Mystery. I composed the anthem for SATB (a cappella), and set it to the ESV translation of the scripture. Based on its context, I suspected the song would work great for Ascension Sunday. Our choir sang the piece beautifully, crescendoing at the finish to the words, Believed on in the world and taken up in glory!

Later that spring, I played the piece for a dear friend of mine who is Pastor at Immanuel Church in Manchester, New Hampshire. What he told me was actually a bit stunning. He informed me that there were (at least) seven specific known Hymns to Christ written into the New Testament Scriptures, whose text is found among the writings of the apostles’ Paul and John. The 1 Timothy 3:16 verse that I had selected for my piece was indeed one of those texts. At that moment, Pastor Don and I made a pact. If he were to supply me with the literal Greek translations of the other six known Hymns to Christ, I would set out to compose brand new anthems for them all. A new musical collaboration had begun. 

With this short introduction serving as the genesis of my new song cycle, I offer you these new Seven Anthems to Christ based on the seven known ancient ‘Hymns to Christ' texts found in the New Testament.

The world was originally no any nations.
The land was plundered and divided into territories.
Colonize first after occupying a frontier;
If you had formed a country, you must raise an army.
Warfare is a deadly killing weapon,
The saints use it when there are no other satisfied ways.
Today's world is in ruins.
The United States, China, Russia, and European Union compete.
Each of them wants to dominate the world.
They don't want to be cooperative diligently;
They use the dirty tricks instead;
They use every possible means for cunning.
When the saint raises only one foot high,
While the devil has already jumped ten feet tall.
They are blind at what the Doomsday is coming,
They still love to rob and snatch.
They would like to die together;
You die and I die, too.
What a shame.
The human body contains cells.
All cells have membranes.
With membranes they know how to be selfish.
Selfish genes have played an important role in evolution.
Love yourself and your country is only a low level of selfishness;
Sacrifices oneself and destroys countries are the high level of selfishness:
The world must be for the global public welfare.
It is really a kind of selfish seeking benefit only for human beings.
Looking at the world today, 
Among Emperors, Empresses, Presidents and Chairmen,
No one is worthy of become a future world leader.
They only know how to love themselves
And their countries’ benefits in a naive way;
They dislike to destroy all the countries,
They don’t practice the rule for world population’s commonwealth, 
Knowing not the brilliance patriotism in the past 
Has becoming the hurdles on the road to globalization. 
How sad, how sad!
Preparing to establish the “World Leadership Education Institute�.
It should be put to the top priority.
I advise you not to be too innocent,
All nations will be perished;
This is a historical march.
Ah, ha, oh, eh, yah!
Home sapiensism needs to be promoted.
The world must be unified.

The pieces which comprise the Six Lenten Anthems are scored for SATB divisi chorus and organ and are both original and arrangements. They were conceived as a unit, i.e. some material is thematically related. The cycle is in arch form - pieces one (Out of the Depths) and six (Be Near Me, Precious Savior) are edited versions of German chorales, both of which have ties to Hassler and Protestant Germany and which have similar cadences. Pieces two (Lamb of God) and five (When Jesus Wept) are arrangements of works utilizing modal dissonance in juxtaposition, number two being another traditional German chorale, number five a familiar melody by Billings. Pieces three (Hosanna! and four (Jerusalem) are original works which require multiple divisi and also employ significant dissonance. Each of the pieces are available and may be performed separately.

Cantate Domino uses words from the start of Psalm 96. Sung cheerfully - mostly in 6/8, but with occasional 5/8 bars - the music reflects the joy of the Psalmist. Gloria in Excelsis joyously proclaims the angels' words at Christmas, firstly on the organ alone, then with the organ accompanying the same theme in the voices ending on an added 2nd chord. These short Buddhist anthems (ranging from about 45 seconds to 1 1/2 minutes duration) are choral settings of poems (wasan) by the great Jodo Shinshu Buddhist luminary, Shinran Shonin (Japan, 1173-1262). Each one celebrates the aspects of the miraculous saving Light of the Buddhist Savior, Amida Buddha. The MP3 Audio Clip is a computer-generated soundfile of the concluding anthem (no. 13). Total duration of the series, about 14 minutes. The style of the music is completely tonal with conventional rhythms, suitable for performance by amateur groups or professional choirs alike.

This Pentecost anthem for SATB or SABar unaccompanied is a modern setting of a translation by the seventeenth century Bishop John Cosin of the plainsong text Veni Creator Spiritus.
