Published by Gordon John Thornett (A0.821201). Prelude and Cherubic Hymn was commissioned by the John F. Kennedy School in Berlin, to mark the 25th anniversary of their annual Advent services held in Berlin Cathedral. It was performed by joint choirs, drawn from students, parents and faculty, and choir members of the American Church in Berlin on 29 November 2017.The piece is built around the ancient hymn, Let all mortal flesh keep silence. I was asked to write an organ prelude, to serve as a processional as the choirs assembled. This may be ordered separately through SwirlyMusic.org - and now also through SheetMusicPlus.After an opening fanfare-like section, the hymn setting starts gently, with sopranos singing in unison, with successive verses using contrasting choral forces to reflect the words, and the music builds to a big climax, with a return of the fanfare opening, for the final verse, At his feet the six-winged seraph, ending with joyful Alleluias. Although originally conceived for a large chorus with orchestral accompaniment, the setting may be performed with just organ or piano.There's a youtube video at https://youtu.be/HQwYDJRdmcc - this is an extract from the first performance in the magnificent setting of Berlin Cathedral, which was packed to capacity. The quality of both sound and picture isn't great, but it will provide you with an idea of the atmosphere and impact of the piece.  The sound recording covers the whole piece, using Sibelius sounds. These simple folksong arrangements were made for two community choirs based in Selly Oak, Birmingham, but they would be equally suitable for school choirs or other groups. Included are well known songs from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, which are woven into a continuous piece lasting about 6' 45. The medley starts with the English song, ‘Early one morning’, one verse of which re-appears at the end to round things off. The tradition of singing folk songs in schools and in the community has very much faded away in the UK, but the four songs selected for this medley are likely to be well known and loved by many of the older generation!The simple harmonies range from three to four parts (SAB/SATB), with some unison sections as well.

This Christmas song is based on a Norwegian folksong, Kling no Klokka (Hear the Church Bells), and the setting was originally made for the Nidaros Cathedral Boys' Choir in Trondheim, Norway, where it has been performed a number of times, with the original Norwegian words. It has also been performed in Singapore, Russia and Scotland (in Norwegian). I have now made a new setting, with my own English words, Let the church bells ring to make it more approachable for English speaking choirs.  The attached youtube video is of a performance given by the Norwegian choir in Singapore.An orchestration is also available from the composer at gtbham@me.com.

The poem was written by Dr. Henry Fields, a former minister of the church, and now retired. It's quite a gentle setting, as befits the words, and is for mixed choir (SATB, with some divisions), with piano (or organ) accompaniment.  A light orchestration is also available from the composer.The music builds to a gentle climax at the end of the poem:As angels sing and shepherds praiseAnd wise men priceless treasures raise,O bow your head to the lowly sodFor you hold none other than the Eternal God.

The piece could be performed by children or adults, or both together, and though primarily intended for harvest, could fit into any service or concert of thanksgiving. There is a reprise of the first verse, a tone higher, with an optional descant.

This is a much more reflective version, for choir and orchestra, given its first performance by the Nidarosdomens Guttekor in the splendid setting of Trondheim Cathedral in December 2017. They also performed the piece on their pre-Christmas tour, using just organ for accompaniment.The setting may be performed effectively with piano or organ accompaniment, but the orchestral score and parts may be obtained from Swirly Music (ref. It was written as a soprano solo with piano accompaniment. In this current version, it may still be performed as a solo, if desired, but I have added choral harmonies so that it can also be used as a choir anthem at christenings or children’s services. It is in 4 parts (SATB) throughout, apart from a couple of measures where the sopranos divide.The simple accompaniment is for piano or organ.
