Nearly everyone can sing along to the chorus of this Italian song “Volare� (“Nel blu dipunto di blu�) which means ‘to fly’. “Volare� recounts a man’s dream in which he is flying high above the earth in the blue sky. And then tells of how, when the moon goes down, it takes dreams along with it, and that another dream such as this, will never come along again. This arrangement is scored for a 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment. It uses the original Italian text (and, at times, Mitchell Parish’s English lyrics). The tempo ranges from a simple fox-trot-to-tango-to-beguine-to a driving musical theater beat. Performance time: 3:05+-.

Sometimes the song of a single voice, over time, evolves into a needed chorus of many. Such is Joni Mitchell’s anthem to activism “The Fiddle and the Drum� (1969).  Originally an anti-Vietnam-war protest song, the song has since been recorded 42 times, and counting, because it inspires us to “remember all the good things ‘we’ are… and because we have all come to fear the beating of ‘your’ drum.�  This arrangement is scored for 8-part [SSAATTBB occasional divisi] chorus, with a very minimal piano part added for percussion-purposes only; essentially the piece is sung a cappella. The ‘piano’ part is actually an interpretation of a timpani and bass drum [2 players] accompaniment which is included with the score.  Performance time 3:48+- Note: this arrangement was conceived with large choral ensemble with mature voices in mind.  The registers are extreme for the bass and alto sections, but doable when building the overall sound of the ensemble and adjusting dynamic levels of the other voices.

This is an original composition for SATB with piano accompaniment and violin. Lyrics are derived from the poem Petals by Amy Lowell. Inspired by French Impressionists who were noted for their water' inspired works that gave the impression of ebb and flow and the glimmering effect of light on the water. The use of added-tone chords, alternating 3/4 and 4/4 time signatures are used to help achieve that effect.  All parts are included for ease of practice. .
