My worship professor often cited the revival era hymn, Love Lifted Me, with its cheerful, lilting melody beneath doleful lines of sin-speckled poetry, as the epitome of poor tune and text pairing. I countered that the point of the hymn is the sinner’s joy in redemption and the happy nature of the music is appropriate to its ultimate message. Yet, my professor’s words lingered over the years to the point that I endeavored to revisit the hymn in consideration of a more functional melding of tune and text. The result is this choral anthem, Love Lifted Me, setting a slightly adapted version of James Rowe’s poetry. Even though the music is completely new, albeit quoting snippets of the original hymn tune, it has an air of familiarity that melds with the text to paint its message in a fresh light. For example, the passages remembering sin and despair are aimless and brooding, while the lines rejoicing over redemption are flowing, energetic, and ebullient. Listen to Love Lifted Me and let your ears be the judge whether this setting expresses the story of personal redemption fittingly.Arranged for SATB chorus and piano, this anthem fills the role of personal testimony and witness with an evangelistic call to respond to the Gospel. It is suitable for most experienced student and adult mixed choirs. Robert MyersS.D.G.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.976729 Composed by Robert Myers. Christian,Contemporary,Sacred. Octavo. 43 pages. WheatMyer Music #5317821. Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.976729). There are 150 psalms in the Bible, each one originally meant to be sung; and so they were for most of the last 3,000 years, beginning at the Jerusalem Temple. They were adopted as the primary song text of the early church as evidenced by Col. 3:16 and maintained in the Western church throughout medieval times. Psalms were the featured texts of most of the Reformers and were the sole mode of sacred singing among the first American settlers. Of late, hymns and choruses and popular songs with human texts have almost entirely replaced the singing of God’s word in many churches. This scarcity of Psalms in the Church’s song is a great loss which frequently motivates me to promote their increase. Thus, THIRTEEN , one member of my first suite of new Psalm settings, is offered as a to help bring the Psalms back into modern worship. The thirteenth Psalm holds a complaint, a petition, and a confession of faith and the music of THIRTEEN portrays each with text painting appropriate to the psalmist's words. A staggering timpani ostinato buffets away beneath the choir's tripartite how long complaint, followed by a dissonant recitative petition which transitions through  shimmering tonal clusters into a joyful, major-key, confession of faith blended with a NT perspective from Eph. 3:20-21. THIRTEEN is challenging music, both in music and message, but for the adventurous music department it provides the opportunity to plumb the depths of scripture with artistry worthy of the rich heritage of Psalmody to use music to express the full message of God’s revelation. THIRTEEN is fitting to program liturgically as a musical exposition of the Psalm or in a sacred or secular concert setting. The very light orchestration complements the vocal performance with rich instrumental color without overwhelming the voices.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.976727 Composed by Robert Myers. Christian,Praise & Worship,Sacred. Octavo. 2 pages. WheatMyer Music #5197337. Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.976727). It was one of those accidents where you find something useful when you’re looking for something else. While reading on the nature of worship, a particular blog article ended with Adoniram Judson’s early 19th Century baptismal poem, Come Holy Spirit, Dove Divine. The flowing text called out (at least to me!) for a musical setting. Accordingly, some melodic and harmonic ideas began to percolate in my thoughts. However, before getting very far along in writing a tune, there were two surprises in store. First many others had already set the text to music before (with a multitude of tunes) going back to at least 1833. Second, despite being a Baptist for over forty years, I discovered that this hymn has been in the Baptist Hymnal since 1956 yet I have no recollection of every singing it! Well, chagrined at my ignorance, I carried on writing a new melody and harmony for this deserving text. I sought to make it friendly to congregational singers while still containing rich and sing-able harmonies and so aimed for a four-part hymn-style form. However, as I suspect my ignorance of the hymn is a common condition, a fresh and modern tune which would be at home in varied musical styles and have popular appeal was also pursued. The result is a delightful and uplifting tune, easy to sing, with an optimistic and forward momentum, commensurate with the meaning of believers’ baptism, Buried with Him in baptism; raised to walk in new life. The music is flexible in application to many church music styles: praise team and band, choir and organ, congregation and piano, or mix and match to fit your needs. May you find Come, Holy Spirit, Dove Divine, singing a much needed text, a means for your congregation to joyfully join with new believers in celebration of their baptism!

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.976711 Composed by Isaac Watts / Lowell Mason. Arranged by Robert Myers. Christian,Easter,Sacred. Octavo. 31 pages. WheatMyer Music #4775085. Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.976711). When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, written by the Father of English Hymnody, Isaac Watts, in 1707 and later matched with Lowell Mason’s 1824 tune, HAMBURG, has long stood at the forefront of English hymnody. This arrangement, taken from my Passion Week cantata, Wounded, Bleeding, Still Proceeding, allows the full talent-spectrum of the Body of Christ to contemplate His sacrifice and offer their devotion. The first two stanzas feature an alto/soprano duet, set in a minor key with frequent diminished and augmented chords to reflect the despair and loss of a witness to the crucifixion. The entire third stanza, set for SATB chorus, never really moves off the F minor tonic until the end. That, and the relentless pounding of the bass line, ponders the witnesses anguish and our vicarious experience of it through Scripture. So, sing these stanzas sadly – they are sad! When the choir enters, be sure to observe the swelling crescendos/diminuendos as the sorrow and love mingle together. The fourth stanza offers optional congregational participation and may be used to provide a responsorial to the Word of God or a preparation for the Table. The choir sings this stanza in four part harmony as the congregation joins on the melody. It stays in a major key and closely follows the traditional consonances used in Lowell Mason’s harmonization; thus, the choral parts will feel familiar and the congregational melody will flow naturally. Take the text literally (Love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.) and sing it firmly, enthusiastically, passionately, but never triumphantly. Sing it as a song of personal devotion to commit all that you have, all that you are, and all that you will ever be, to the one who humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross (Phil 2:8b) so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him (2 Cor 5:21)The music is well within the grasp of any ensemble competent with traditional SATB anthems. The piano/organ accompaniments are straightforward yet very colorful. When I Survey the Wondrous Cross is an unapologetic Christian worship anthem suitable for sacred services, yet does not compromise on artistic expression. The parts provided in this version include a full score, a piano-vocal octavo (which may be performed alone), and organ and timpani/percussion parts. Neither organ or timpani are required but adding either or both provides a deep and rich experience. Parts for reduced orchestra (strings and single winds) are available separately.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1267531 Composed by John W. Fisher. 21st Century,A Cappella,Christian,Contemporary,Religious. Octavo. 2 pages. John Fisher #860067. Published by John Fisher (A0.1267531). This is the fourth in my series of Sermon Songs. On June 18, 2023, at First Presbyterian Church, Fort Myers, Florida, Rev. Roger Peterson used the text Acts 12 : 1-19 in an inspiring sermon - BELIEVING PRAYER. James had been killed, and Herod, grandson of Herod the Great, who had spoken to the Wise Men, put Peter in chains and had him heavily guarded so he could be executed after the Feast of the Unleavened Bread.  The early church prayed, and prayed for Peter, and an angel lead Peter out and he at first thought it was a dream. When he finally realized he was free, he knocked and knocked on doors until a faithful girl named Rhoda let him join in what  would be his long journey of spreading the Gospel. Herod, by the way had the guards killed, but when he acted like a god, God got him but good.In these perilous times, I would hope that this hymn arrangement could be sung over and over.  ( Check out my other published Sermon Songs - SING TO THE LORD,  MOSES AND MIRIAM,  and  BARNABAS.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.976710 Composed by Robert Myers. Christian,Concert,Contemporary,Easter,Sacred. Octavo. 10 pages. WheatMyer Music #4767525. Published by WheatMyer Music (A0.976710). It Is Not Death to Die is a new setting of French poet Henri Abraham CĂ©sar Malan's Non, ce n'est pas mourir as translated by George Washington Bethune and adapted for this work. Why this text? It first came to my notice shortly after the passing of Billy Graham, who was known to paraphrase D. L. Moody,   Someday you will read or hear that Billy Graham is dead. Don’t you believe a word of it. I shall be more alive than I   am now. I will just have changed my address. I will have gone into the presence of God.Graham's bold proclamation and Malan's poetry motivated me to focus anew on the resurrection, re-remembering it as the pivotal element of the Christian faith. For if there is no resurrection, Paul says in 1 Cor 15, our faith is useless. But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead! Unfortunately, singing about heaven has, perhaps, been neglected of recent decades. We seem to have focused more on the already to the detriment of the not yet. But it is important to remember that this life is not all there is! Quoting Paul again, the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us (Rom 8:18). Yet, if Christ delays, the grim inevitability of our transition into eternity is a certain experience we all face. Malan's poetry so poignantly and eloquently captures this tension that it compelled me to compose a fresh musical setting that attempts to captures the mixture of dread and hope borne out in the acclamation that death is swallowed up in victory! I pray that this setting aids the Church to remember the great hope and promise Christ has granted us:   O Death, where is your victory?    O Death, where is your sting?_______________________________________________________________________________________________The music opens with a C# diminished chord in a very still and somber texture reflective of grief. The text is introduced with the first of two main motives, a rising 4-note outline of B minor in a triple repetition of It Is Not Death. As each stanza proceeds the music concludes on the second motive, a 5-note descending span of a minor 7th in Bb Lydian. The energy and mood of the music gradually shift over the five stanzas, as the focus moves from this life to the next; the texture thickens, the harmony expands, and the dynamic grows into the music’s pinnacle on reign with You on high! The music closes on a reprise of the opening section, simultaneously mindful of our mortality and our eternity.
